One Of The Best Collectable Reference Guides Available
A "Must Have" for any serious Higgins collector. There is an almost overwhelming amount of information presented in a most organized manner. So many wonderful color photographs that I went into sensory overload. Loads of great, historical information and imagery. The only down side of the book is that the price guide is not representative of current market values but if looked at properly will still give you a good idea of how one pattern will relate to another in value. I wish other collectable genres had reference guides of this caliber.

ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS
This is truly a masterpiece of editing. The author has truly done an outstanding job. This is a MUST book for any serious Higgins collector as well as anyone who enjoys beautiful glass. The author is certainly to be commended for this one of a kind work.

A book as beautiful as the glass
If you want to collect Higgins glass, this book is an absolute must-have. The prices are outdated; with the recent death of Michael Higgins, I have seen pieces sell for double or triple the book's values. This is much more than a price guide, though. This book details the history of Higgins glass, their techniques, and how to identify what is and is not Higgins glass. There are several beautiful color pictures on almost every page, and I enjoy looking at them almost as much as I enjoy looking at the pieces in my collection.

The authentic voice; a pre-writing approach to student writing
Published in Unknown Binding by W. C. Brown Co. ()

Refreshing for the Seventies!
Dr. Stewart rivets our attention to what real writing is all about: writing through the voice of the author. With the onset of social construction theory, Stewart's message may have become passe for some, but for those of us who too often were forced to write within the guidelines of five paragraph essays, Stewart taps the wellsprings of creativity itself. While other more recent textbooks may expound more eloquently on the writing and rewriting process (or "vision and revision" as Donald Murray calls it), the fact is that Stewart's book is, historically, one of the very first to tackle the subject of writing from a student's point of view. His democratic approach gives his readers credit for the ability to be creative in their own right. The teacher's role? To get out of the way of their students' writing

Jeffersonians vs Federalists
This book is a comprehensive detailed review of the Democratic Republican press of the early Federalist period. The Republicans waged a relentless war against the elitist and arrogant Federalist Party which they believed was leading the nation back to aristocracy and monarchy. The author details Republican presses from Massachusetts to Georgia and their modes of attack on such Federalist policies as the Jay Treaty, the assumption of state debts, the Alien and Sedition Acts and the quasi-war with France. The Republicans defended democracy and the French Revolution against the British influence and bias of the Federalists. A great book.

The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and His Greatest Enemy (Penguin Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (25 October, 2001)
Authors: William Makepeace Thackeray, Donald Hawes, and J.I.M. Stewart

Fun and quite readable
Most people know of only one book by Thackeray: his witty and savage masterpiece VANITY FAIR. PENDENNIS, perhaps his second-best book, is certainly no slouch itself: a funny, rollicking Bildungsroman, PENDENNIS chronicles the adventures of a loveable young man who almost always manages to get himself into trouble, and his tribulations with the several attractive women in his life (including his young mother). There are some definite slow patches to the work, but for the most part it moves almnost at a rip-roaring pace, and it has none of the overseriousness that mars Thackeray's later works (such as the fascinating, but slowpaced THE NEWCOMES). This is Victorian reading at its most pleasurable, if not its most intellectually challenging.

Everyone should read this book!
This is without a doubt one of the funniest and enjoyable novels I have ever read! Do not let the length of the book scare you, Thackeray's brilliant and unique style makes it an easy joy to read. I admit there are some lulls but overall PENDENNIS will earn an honored place on any bookshelf.

Probability for Risk Management
Published in Paperback by Actex Pubns Inc (1999)
Authors: Matthew J., Phd Hassett, Donald, Phd Stewart, and Donald A. Stewart
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Too elementary
This text published by Actex, is clearly exclusively designed for the audience of students who are preparing for actuarial exam 1 (probability and calculus). It is paperback, and the typesetting is poor compared with other probability texts.

This book is okay for a sort of remedial text, but much too easy for the serious actuarial student. This book is not going to provide adequate preparation, so be prepared to select another probability text such as Bean or Ross from the list.

Given the level of difficulty of the actuarial exams, the level of this textbook is much too low. Recommended only for those students who cannot take a course in probability and are not successful reading one of the other texts on the course of reading.

In short, if this is the right level text for you, the actuarial exam is not at your level.

probability for risk management
This book is readable, easy to understand, and informative. It is recommended by the Society of Actuaries for the SOA/CAS Course 1 exam. I taught myself probability for the exam from this book.

Easy to read and understand
I bought this book to prepare for the first actuarial exam. The authors have written a book that is easy to follow and understand without a great deal of theory. The problems are not impossible, and the solutions to all of them are in the back of the book, not just the odd-numbered ones. If you are studying for Exam 1 and you are looking for a probability book, this is the one for you.

James Stewart through the eyes of Donald Dewey
Author Donald Dewey deliveres a very detailed description of James Stewart, but the book is not pure-it has a spin. Particular events in Mr. Stewarts life are amplified and opinionated with the author's twist. After reading the first 2 chapters of this book, it is clear to see that we are seeing the life of James Stewart through the eyes of Donald Dewey.

A life-story competently told, but uninspired
The memory of Jimmy Stewart suffers not at all in this well-researched biography. A nice touch is the brief summary and review of each movie in which Stewart appeared over the course of his lifetime, and the impact, for better or worse, that each had on his career. However, the author's prose style is dry as toast and lacking in any humor whatsoever. What could have been an outstanding work is, in the end, only a competent treatment of his subject.

This book is thoroughly written and researched.
I have read many books about the life of Jimmy Stewart and found that this one is the most thorough and balanced. Mr. Dewey details Jimmy Stewart's life from all angles but never resorts to smarmy or tabloid-like tactics. While he does not sugar coat Stewart, he doesn't blast him either; he leaves the reader to draw his/her own conclusions. This is the book I would recommend to anyone who wished to find out as much as possible about one of the greatest actors and intriguing personalities of the 20th century.

More like re-hashing than shattering
When I bought this book, I was hoping to read about new arguments but all I found were old articles written by a very small group of these narrow-minded people who were so anti-ASL without any sound research backing up their allegations. Buying this book is a waste of money when one can easily find these articles on internet. This book is published by a very small publisher, probably at the writer's expense. Spend your money on a good book, not this one.

Shedding Light Upon the Untold Side of ASL
Being a DODA ASL instructor fluent in various other methods of communication (TC, SEE2, PSE, Oralism), I have found Bertling's publication a refreshing look into the other side of the entire ASL debate that encompasses the Deaf community as a whole. Expertise from Parsons, Stewart, and others shed light upon the dark corners of ASL that many are rarely exposed to. Topics regarding the failure of Deaf education, Bilingual-Bicultural, immoral intimidation tactics, Harlan Lane's Mask of Benevolence, and other pressing points are mentioned.

The reader also can take comfort in the fact that many of the contributing authors are Deaf themselves. They are not only speaking from the viewpoint of empirical research, but also from their own personal experiences. Personal accounts that go against the traditional ASL mindset are also given, serving as a reminder that no political faction in the Deaf world has the right answer to the education of each and every Deaf child.

With that in mind, Bertling's book is a very highly reccomended read for anyone who is interested in Deafness and the Deaf world. ASL: Shattering the Myth provides a (needed) balance to a very disproportionate war of propagandists.
