great nutrition book, with depth and insight.
Ray Kurzweil brings his legendary scientific mind to the world of nutrition and produces a work of science that becomes a work of art. Founded on facts and research this is a entertaining and well written work guaranteed to inspire and motivate depending only on experience and well subsitiated facts. This books covers many areas but is never overly obscure or unweildy.

Ray has included an robust index and a clever socratic dialogue that helps the reluctant reader digest his

The !0% Solution for a Healthy Life
This book is a wonderfully easy-to-read "How to" guide to living in a healthy way. Ray Kurzweil does an excellent job in pooling together so much well-substantiated research data regarding what truly makes a healthy diet. His focus is on HEALTH and LONGEVITY rather than weight loss. He is concise, motivating and right on target. I encourage my patients to read his book if they are truly serious about getting/staying healthy!

A Must-Read for those who want to LIVE!
The author is a scientist, not a nutritionist, who literally saved his life from terminal illness by researching how diet correlates with disease. The "hook" is that virtually EVERY reader in the USA has atherosclerosis --but does not know it! One detail overlooked (but noted by Andrew Weil, MD, elsewhere) is the essential ratio of omega-3 to omega-6. Very practical suggestions. You will die unnecessarily early if you fail to follow this advice. Makes tough technical stuff easy to read, understand & live by.

Wonderful Book
I suggest this book for anyone who has a love for the game of golf. It puts simple movements of martial arts into your swing and gives your great results! It's the best.

Excellent-clear and concise
If you will spend 15-20 minutes a day doing the drills, eastern and western, you will really improve. The 123 drill was particularly helpful in reducing my last round by 8 strokes. His drills work they really do!

He knows what he is talking about!
I got the opportunity to work for Ted Kiegiel at Carolina Country Club while I was in school at NC State University. I got to see him play golf and give lessons. You can really see his results in the game of the junior golfers. I have never seen so many junior golfers shooting so close to par. Everything he teaches is easily understood and easily reproduced in your golf game. Although, I never had the opportunity to get a lesson from Ted himself, I did have the opportunity to get one from one of the assistants. His teaching was similar to Ted's because all of the assistants listen to what Ted says and puts it into their own lessons. Ted Kiegiel has discovered a way to help the average golfer master the game and improve his score tremendously. If you read the book and do what it says, you will be playing balanced golf in no time.

Approval Voting
Published in Paperback by Birkhauser (1983)
Authors: Steven J. Brams and Peter C. Fishburn
Amazon base price: $19.50
Average review score:

Some Day This Book Will Be A Classic
I really hope that some day we implement Approval Voting in our country. This book will be a classic, remembered as the first seed of a beautiful political reform.

In a nutshell, Approval Voting allows you to rate each candidate as acceptable or unacceptable. The candidate acceptable to the most voters wins.

Our current system, one man one vote, works fine with only 2 candidates. However, with 3 or more candidates our current system is faulty. There are plenty of problems with it that you can learn of from the literature on voting, but the most obvious is the "spoiler problem", where a minor candidate (e.g. Buchanan or Nader) can steal support from a major candidate (e.g. Bush or Gore). Approval Voting solves this problem, because you can simply indicate acceptance of Gore as well as Nader, or Buchanan as well as Bush.

This book is very balanced in its coverage of topics. They cover plenty of important theory in a very rigorous fashion, but also go through empirical examples from real elections. They develop tools for analyzing election data, in hopes of understanding what WOULD have happened if we had used Approval Voting.

Also, the math in the book is kept relatively simple. And, even if you aren't a big math fan, the first chapter is geared toward the non-expert, and in most chapters the first and last sections outline the basic ideas. So, if you want to learn about how Approval Voting stacks up in strategic matters, but you don't want to wade through the math, just read the first and last sections of the chapter on strategy.

Overall, this books is fantastic. I strongly recommend it! It's hard to find, but copies are out there for the determined reader, and you won't even have to steal them from the library!

Finally, I recommend the paperback version over the hardcover. The paperback has some reviewer comments on the back, which gives a little insight as to how the book was received when it first came out.

Third Party Candidates - The road to Legitimacy
Brams and Fishburn have written an elegant book that brings approval voting alive. While not for the casual reader, anyone with previous game theory knowledge should enjoy this work. Third party candidates are a real part of today's news, as the role of Nader in the 2000 election indicates. I used this book to analyze the 1998 Minnesota Gubernatorial race that saw the election of Jesse Ventura. Anyone attempting to analyze the 2000 election needs to start with this book.

An underappreciated theologian.
"Evocations of Grace" is a small sampling of Joseph Sittler's writings and thoughts on ecology, theology and ecumenism from 1954-75. Martin E. Marty (University of Chicago) wrote a very personal foreward describing Sittler as a truly gifted "theologian, rhetor, teacher, exemplar". Sittler was a pioneer in terms of speaking out on the environment from a Christian perspective. His description of nature (both organic and works of art, poetry, dance) was the "theatre of God's of grace". He made a landmark speech at the 1961 World Council of Churches on ecumenism. Sittler's writing is interesting and alive because he "insisted that his loose, unsystematic manner of exposition was appropriate to the dynamic and interrelated character of experience, and to the concrete particularity of occasions of grace". "Evocations" is a fantastic introduction to a bit of Sittler's "corpus of work"--how Joe would have loved to play with THAT phrase!

An unknown, underappreciated pioneer
Evocations of Grace is a compilation of some of the writings and musings of American Lutheran Joseph Sittler. This corpus of work spans from 1954 to 1975. Martin E. Marty gives a very personal glimpse of Sittler who attracted small groups of students who listened for any tidbit they could glean as he walked through Chicago's Hyde Park. Sittler wrote and spoke on the environment in the '50's. He influenced Teilhard de Chardin's work on the "cosmic Christ". In 1961 he made a landmark speech on ecumenism at the WCC meeting in New Delhi. Sittler's incarnational view of nature as "God's theatre of grace" shaped much of his theology on "creation-as-grace". Sittler is an interesting theologian to read because of his style of using poetry and literature (which he considered to be part of nature, along with art, dance, etc...) in his "loose, unsystematic manner of exposition". "Evocations" is a fine introduction to a theologian who will hopefully, one day, be recognized for the pioneering theologian he was.

Mystical.
This is the shooting script to the most watched miniseries of 1998. All of the film's wonderful dialogue is included here along with some things that were cut and weren't seen in the miniseries. This edition also includes a short history about the film, a fine introduction, some pictures, and cast & crew notes. Great for any fan of the miniseries, any lover of King Arthur lore, or any serious film student.

Merlin
With imaginative dialogue and brilliant visual work, Merlin comes alive in script format. This book dosen't just offer the script, it also provides pictures and history, and some entries on the film's production. This document is extremely amusing and enchanting.

Rabbit Production
Published in Hardcover by Interstate Printers & Pub (2000)

Amazon base price: $39.35
Average review score:

Class of the field but improvement needed.
This, the 8th Ed. is the classic by George Templeton, updated by McNitt, Patton, Lukefahr and Cheeke.

Although no serious rabbit raiser can afford to be without this book, it could use an overhaul. A bit too much deals with academic issues and diseases or health issues, and a bit too little on trial experiments and management.

If rabbit farming is ever to become a viable endeavor people (raisers and bankers) need to have an authoritative source to consult. I am not aware of any researchers better able to satisfy such a need than McNitt, Patton, Lukefahr and Cheeke. And, were they to include such information in edition 9 you can bet I'd be buying it immediately.

As I indicated earlier, this is a must buy for any serious rabbit raiser throughout North or South America or Africa or Asia. It is a great reference for producing meat, fur, or for Angora Wool.

Rabbit Production: 8th Edition
If you can only get one book on rabbits, this is the book to get! Considered by many rabbit breeders, exhibitors, owners to be 'THE' book on rabbits. The authors are rabbit owners/breeders themselves and they know whereof they speak. Easy to read and understand, it includes a history of rabbits, genetics, feeding, housing, breeding, medical care, the merits of rabbits as pets, rabbits in therapy, just about anything you would ever need or want to know about rabbits. This book is well worth every penny of the cost. It's a very modest investment when you want to provide the very best for your rabbit, or rabbits, no matter why you have them.

Rabbit Production
This is the newest edition of a classic in raising rabbits commercially. This edition has color photographs that prove to be very useful. It contains practical useful and up-to-date information that simply cannot be found elsewhere. Not a how-to book for pet rabbit owners, but a serious manual for producing high quality healthy rabbits in an economical manner. I would not attempt to raise rabbits commercially without this "bible" on the bookshelf.

The beauty, power and subtlety of solitary living
Illustrated by Peter Fiore and edited by Steven Schnur, Henry David's House introduces young readers ages 5 to 9 to the life, thought and writings of Henry David Thoreau. Text and illustration collaborate to showcase the beauty, power and subtlety of solitary living withing the context of a nature-oriented retreat as represented by Thoreau's tiny house in the woods and on the shore of Walden Pond. Henry David's House is an enthusiastically recommended addition to school and community picturebook collections.

Living the Simple Life.....
"Near the end of March I borrowed an axe and went down to the woods by Walden Pond and began to cut down some tall white pines for timber..." Author, Steven Schnur has chosen several wonderfully engaging passages from Henry David Thoreau's Walden, in this elegant picture book, and young readers will really get a vivid sense of the hard, yet rewarding work of building his house, the few possessions needed to live comfortably, the beauty of the changing seasons, and living the simple life in harmony with nature. "Sometimes, in a summer morning, having taken my accustomed bath, I sat in my sunny doorway from sunrise till noon, rapt in a revery, amidst the pines and hickories and sumachs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness, while the birds sang around or flitted noiseless through the house, until by the sun falling in at my west window, or the noise of some traveller's wagon on the distant highway, I was reminded of the lapse of time." Peter Fiore's lush and exquisite watercolor illustrations bring the splendor of Thoreau's existence at Walden Pond to life on the page, and together word and art evoke feelings of peace, quiet, and contentment. Perfect for readers 8-12, this book works well as a real aloud with D.B. Johnson's Henry Builds a Cabin, for younger children. With an editor's note at the end to fill in further biographical details about Thoreau and his time at Walden, Henry David's House is an evocative treasure to read, share, and most of all discuss. "We can never have enough of Nature."

A great introduction to Thoreau for young readers.
Henry David's House is a picturebook adaptation by Steven Schnur of a part of Henry David Thoreau's classic nature book "Walden", told with only a limited amount of editing. Beautiful, slightly abstract yet full-color illustrations by Peter Fiore bring this classic thinker's words to vibrant life for young readers. Henry David's House is a superb introduction to a literary masterpiece for young readers, and its final message, "We can never have enough of Nature," reverberates in the hearts of all ages. Highly recommended for family, school, and community library picturebook collections.

A History of Prejudice and Heroism
Throughout Mexico, one can hear of the legend of the SanPatricios, a battalion of soldiers in the U.S.-Mexico War that wasmade up almost entirely of deserters from the U.S. Army. Predominately Irish and/or Catholic, the San Patricios fought well for the Mexicans -- and they suffered for it significantly when the U.S. finally won the war.

Stevens does an excellent job of telling the story of the battalion, the history behind its foundation, and the punishment its members faced after the war. Adding to the interest of the story is the role that many of those in the U.S. Army during the U.S.-Mexico War went on to play pivotal roles in the U.S. and CSA armies during the Civil War.

the rogue's march
A must read for the student of Irish-American and Vietnam history. Goes into detail of the anti-Catholic/anti-emmigrant climate of America in the the 1840's. A story of America's first war of agresssion against another independent nation, shows the beggings of Americas imperialistic wars.A good companion text for istorians of America's involvement in South East Asia,"if we do not learn from history we are cursed to repeat it."

Awesome story
Truly awesome story. Well written and researched. Really made me think. Brings up a lot of repressed issues that are difficult to deal with as an American.
