The Beast in the Bathtub
I bought this book in 1987 for my then 6 year old. It quickly became his favorite. The friendly green monster helped him to conquer his own fear of bed time monsters, and it became our joke that 'the beast' was under his bed guarding him! He is now a U.S. Marine and the book has become a favorite of his 2 and 4 year old little brothers who love it not only because 'Big brother Dave' loves it (still), but because they love to join in the pillow fight at bedtime and imagine stealing apples from the kitchen when the sheriff and deputy are watching t.v. They love to call out the final sentence with me as I read.... "OF COURSE there's no beast in the bathtub.... he's under my bed!!!"

One of my children's favorite books!
"Lewis skidded down the stairs and into the living room. 'I can't take a bath,' he announced. 'There's a Beast in the bathtub.'" So begins one of the most heavily rotated books in my children's collection. The delightful text is complemented by charming illustrations. The best children's books appeal to those who read aloud and those who listen. Beast in the Bathtub more than satisfies both audiences. If you can get your hands on a copy, don't miss this wonderful book!

A story your child will love to read over and over.
The story is about a boy, Lewis, who doesn't want to take a bath because there is a Beast in the bathtub. Lewis's mom insists that he bathe and the adventure begins. Lewis and the Beast are loveable characters and their interaction is charming. The story flows beautifully from start to finish making readers feel they are actually watching Lewis and the Beast. The illustrations are also wonderful. A must read for all children.

Great overview of our National Scenic Trails!!
This is the best resource available for an overview of America's eight National Scenic Trails. It is a MUST for anyone with an interest in our National Trails System.

A good choice for arm-chair travelers and wanderers alike
This is one of those rare travel books that will inform and entertain the armchair traveler while at the same time provide invaluable information to the trekker setting out to explore one of the Congressionally sponsored National Scenic Trails. Congress established the National Trails System Act in 1968 for the purpose of creating a trail system that would provide long-distance paths through some of the most scenic country in America and preserve trails that contributed to our history. Since 1968 the trail system has designated twelve national historic trails, some eight hundred national recreation trails and eight national scenic trails. This book focuses on the eight National Scenic Trails in the system and is a great guide to the almost 16,000 miles they encompass through 30 states. The trails range in length from 694 miles (the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail) to the 4,300 mile North Country National Scenic Trail. The trails, due to the diversity of their locations, can be traveled in all four seasons and contain some, if not all, of the best scenery and animal life, not to mention historical significance, that the United States has to offer. The National Scenic Trails are Appalachian, Continental Divide, Florida, Ice Age, Natchez Trace, North Country, Pacific Crest, and Potomac. The book is a combination travel guide and history lesson that is written in a highly readable, fact-filled manner. For each of the eight trails there is a history of the trail, a description of the trail today, a list of points of interest, detailed maps, state-by-state tourist information, a listing of the total mileage of the trail, and the states it traverses. For those of us that probably will not attempt to walk the Appalachian Trail "straight through"(it's 2,144 miles long!) the author thoughtfully gives suggestions on where one can enter the trail at numerous locations and walk for a few hours with time for a picnic lunch. This is a splendid general reference book for the National Scenic Trails. For the reader desiring more specific information on any of the trails the author has included a complete, up-to-date listing of all state and public land agencies, an exhaustive bibliography, an index, and 87 color illustrations and detailed, yet readable, maps. June 2nd is National Trails Day and what better way to learn about those national treasures that getting a copy of this book. This is a perfect example of the quality publications one can expect from the University of Oklahoma Press. Armchair travelers and wanderers of all types will be delighted.

A Virtual Tour and Visual Delight
I encourage anyone who has ever visited the Museum of American History in Washington, DC and anyone who has not yet visited to invest in a copy of this book. Everything from the vibrant colors on the front cover, to the images of the museum's treasures within the pages is unique in its own way, and worth closer inspection. A picture is worth a thousand words, but the captions and text for each chapter are informative and to-the-point, yet anecdotal enough to entertain and hold a reader's interest. Kendrick and Lubar have created a jewel that the Smithsonian should be as proud of as any of the objects selected for this publication.

The Book of Madness: Whispers Without, Chaos Within (Mage)

Very informative
The Book of Madness is a first edition look at the major antagonists of mages, the Nephandi, Marauders, cults, and various umbrood. It is outdated because a lot of the mechanics have been reprinted in Mage 2nd Edition. However, information regarding culture, beliefs, and practices were abundant. This book really broke the anagonistic groups down so that storytellers can come up with more unique antagonists rather than relying on the cardboard-cutout villians with badass powers who are bad simply because they are. The book explains the reasons why they are badasses and what they believe in.

Know Chaos within - give birth to lots of screwed up stars!
Like the Technocracy, the main Mage rules do little to explain why the Fallen Ones or the Mad Ones are supposed to be feared and hunted by the Archmages or even the majority of ranking mages in Traditional or Technocratic circles. Aside from the Nephandi having evil powers and the Marauders being almost completely immune to the limiting effects of Paradox, they simply functioned as human-sized dragons in Mage, good for destroying large chunks of real estate or frightening small children.

With this book, we now have information about running and playing these kinds of characters that turns them into actual characters, rather than scary set-pieces. You didn't just sell your soul to a Hermetic mage gone bad, you sold it to Jodi Blake, with a distinctive style all her own. And so on.

I recommend this book as a starting place for any storyteller (or, heaven forbid, a player) who wants to include one or more of these folks in a Mage game.

Madness and Evil etc.
This is THE most useful Mage sourcebook there is. Get it at the same time you pick up 2nd edition Mage and you'll be away. It explains (in fact theorises about) the nature of paradox, spirits, marauders, nephandi and so on, and gives handy hints on how to flesh them out into plausible adversaries rather than monsters to magick to death. It is excellently written and well thought out, typically Phil Brucato (who is by the way the most worthwhile member of White Wolf by a mile) and will improve your chronicle. Trust me (as Jodi Blake might say)

Green Rubber Boots: A Joyful Journey to Wellness

Interesting Account of NIH experimental work on sarcoma
Recently, I heard Kathleen Whitmer speak and bought her book. It is an interesting account of her "journey back to wellness" courtesy of the experimental work done at the National Institutes of Health. We have her and the others who participated in the studies over the years to thank for some of the advances in the treatment of cancer that we have today. It is clear she is an amateur author, but her point and her sense of humor come across like she could be your neighbor feeding cookies to your own son in his Green Rubber Boots.

Everyone can benefit!
You don't have to be suffering from cancer or a serious illness to enjoy and benefit from a reading of Green Rubber Boots. Through its sheer gentle wisdom and humor, the messages within speak to the human spirit within us all. In 1979 at age 42, Canton, Ohio native Kathleen Whitmer discovered that she had sarcoma cancer, a rare type of cancer comprising less than 3% of all cancers. Then an art professor at Kent State University's School of Art, Whitmer agreed to participate in research trials and experimental treatments at the National Institute of Health's National Cancer Institute in Bethseda, Maryland. Undergoing surgery with simultaneous radiation and chemotherapy treatments, Whitmer learned more than just to live with the disease: she discovered just how shallow and predictable her life was before being confronted with such a serious illness and surprisingly confesses "Cancer gave me life." GRB is a quick and delightful read, a collection of vignettes about her experiences at NIH. The author is quick to disclose her appreciation of government-funded studies such as those offered at NIH and NCI. The book is a marriage of sorts between her background as an artist and as a cancer survivor with resulting gentle wisdom tempered by humor, levity and a refreshing simplicity that echoes her observation "It's not easy being sick in a society that worships wellness." This book will be one that you will pass along from friend to friend. Cute illustrations, too!

An Uplifting Message
The book "Green Rubber Boots, A Joyful Journey to Wellness" is not only a book about surviving cancer. It has a larger message than that, the book illustrates how a positive outlook can help one overcome adversity. Through the stories in the book one can look at their own lives and see how a positive outlook could change their perception of the world.

Dolphin's First Day: The Story of a Bottlenose Dolphin

Nicely written, Kid-friendly Dolphin story
This is a story about a newborn Bottleneck dolphin's first day in the ocean. It is nicely written and illustrated but the kid friendly story line takes away slightly from the factual information. Even so, both my children (2 year-old and 4 year-old) and I really enjoy this book and others in this "Smithsonian Ocean Series" especially Manatee Winter.

A delightful little book
A simple concept: Pooh's friends are looking for him and your young reader must open the flaps to see if Pooh is in each place. Along the way, you meet up with all Pooh's other friends until finally you find him. Kids love the flaps and the repetition of the "where's Pooh" theme.
