The most important book on phobias and their treatment.
A lot of people suffer -- and I do mean suffer -- from one or more phobias, and a lot of techniques are offered by various therapists to treat phobias. Unfortunately, while some of these treatments may reduce phobic symptoms somewhat, relatively few phobics are actually cured. In this excellent book, Dr. Harold Levinson explains the reasons for this situation. One is that there are three different types of phobias, a fact not generally recognized. About 5% or so of phobias are caused primarily by a neurotic condition of some sort. These phobias often respond to conventional psychotherapy whereas most phobias do not. Another 5% or so of phobias are caused by a severe trauma, such as being bitten by a dog or being in a plane that almost crashes. These phobias are often helped by desensitization therapy. But if phobias that are caused primarily by neurosis or trauma account for only about 10% of all phobias, what is the primary cause of the other 90%? Dr. Levinson's brilliant discovery is that the root cause of most phobias is a disorder of the cerebellar-vestibular sustem, called in lay terminology "the inner ear." Dr. Levinson also found that inner ear disorders are the primary cause of dyslexia and that there is a very high correlation between dyslexia and phobias. About 90% of people who are phobic or dyslexic are both phobic and dylexic. Fortunately, Dr. Levinson has found that about 80% of cases of both phobias and dyslexia respond to at least one of the inner ear medications currently available, including dramamine, scopolamine, and Benadryl. Inner ear disorders are relatively easy for trained audiologists to detect and verify by the battery of tests available to them, but they seldom are detected by routine examinations made by general practitioners or even ear, nose, and throat specialists. If you suffer from phobias and/or dyslexia -- as I do -- please read this book with an open mind. It may literally change your life for the better. In my case, thorough audiological testing -- as described in this book -- revealed that I do indeed have an inner ear disorder which was not detected by routine examinations. Based on this finding, my physician tried the inner ear medications listed by Dr. Levinson and found one that has given me significant relief. Therefore, I am recommending this book from personal experience.

Phobia Free A Medical Breakthrough linking 90% Of All Phobia
I Have been phobic for the last five years, i've been hospitalised and housebound. My phobias started on a day trip in the country with what I know now as a panic attack,it was the most frightening exprience of my life as I thought I was going mad and or had a brain tumour. After psychiatry, hypnotherapy, counciling and reiki healing. After numerous amounts of medication and none to my relief,my phobias incresed and I was desperate I could see no way out of this living nightmare. I got the book and finished it in an evening it was brilliant I'am now on the medication 3 weeks and everyday I lose a phobia its a miracle and I would just like to thank Dr Harold Levinson for giving me what i can only say is my life back--

A must read for those suffering from OCD and Phobias
This is beneficial information for those suffering from OCD. Dr. Levinson's theory has led to my complete recovery. His theory attributes the disorder to a "medical" condition of the inner-ear called a cerebellar-vestibular dysfunction and is easily treated and corrected with a combination of antihistamines, antimotion-sickness, and antianxiety medications that he prescribes. Soon after starting the medication, the disorder was gone. Calmness and total control were shortly established. Prior to this were many months of unsuccessful behavioral therapy treatment with no relief occuring. Dr. Levinson's treatment doesn't just give some relief from OCD, it rids it! His book "Phobia Free" is extremely helpful and describes in depth how the cv-dysfunction is related to all anxiety. It describes why obsessive thoughts occur and how they are thoughts that are just not being properly filtered. The title of this book, "Phobia Free," is truly ! ! a perfect description of how an OCD sufferer feels after being treated by Dr. Levinson for this "medical" condition called the cv-dysfunction.

The Polo Primer: A Guide for Players and Spectators
Published in Hardcover by Penguin USA (1989)
Authors: Steven D. Price, Charles Kauffman, and Harold Roth
Amazon base price: $4.98
Average review score:

Compact Guide to Polo
The Polo Primer, as the name suggests, is an introductory guide to polo. It traces the game's history, from its origins in ancient military training to the games of modern times. Equipment, horse selection, learning the strokes, playing as a team, and how to get involved with polo are all covered. My rating of a 9 was based on the length (around 100 pages); I would have preferred a more detailed work. However, a lengthy volume might put off many new comers, whereas this book is the right size for the person deciding whether or not to get into polo

I found this book to extremely well-organized and wonderful!
Portfolio Design is probably the best book on the subject for those involved in architecture and the related disciplines who are looking for support and guidance on how to design their portfolio with artistry and a clear sense of legibility and organiaztion. I found it to be highly recommended by faculty and students and then purchased a copy for myself to see. I graduated this past spring and i know many people who have similar experiences not knowing what to do about your work for grad school apps or employment interviews - this text helped enormously. The author is a well-respected artist and professor of architecture with many other books to his name.I heard him lecture at the AIAS National Forum this past week - and wow - everyone was really interested in what was presented - how to approach the problem - its all broken down for you. I think it would help anyone who wants design guidance with artistry.

emphasis on artistry instead of formula approach - great!
Linton seems to believe that artistry is more important than a standard method. He writes a convincing approach to doing your portfolio from scratch instead of using those zippered cases which he does not believe reflect one's creative or design talents. He seems to think that the 'vision' of the portfolio comes from a thorough understanding of page structure and the creative potential of a well-rehearsed two-dimensional page layout - understanding negative space and how to use it effectively. I have had him as an instructor in one of his portfolio design workshop classes and he 'preaches' what he writes and it worked well for me. So i endorse the approach because i know its thorough and effective. He is also quite personable in his presentation and very good speaker - well organized and extremely thorough. Great Book!Looking forward to more stuff from him in the future possibly on computers and portfolios.

the book & the author's workshops are extremely beneficial
i took one of the workshops offered this year at Iowa State University with Professor Linton. He gave a general lecture on Friday evening and reviewed many ideas about collecting, organizing and designing your portfolio from scratch. The lecture was also a 'warm-up' for the all day Saturday workshop to follow. I worked hard during the workshop and found him to be wonderful and supportive and with me the whole time. He enjoys working with creative concepts and tries to push you in the direction of making your presentation very unique but extremely well-organized. I was amazed at the progress i made in six hours. After that we had a critique and we discussed the future direction, especially production and development. I have so much input now. I disagree with the comments from the student from Hawaii because this book is not a how-to - its a conceptual approach. I understand he is giving us tools to make us aware of creative direction, plenty of method and materials, and arriving at your own conclusions - making your own decisions. i don't want to be told how-to. i loved it. he also told us he is changing the digital chapter in the second edition next year which will be cool to see whats added and new portfolios will be added also. next year i'm off to grad school and so i hope he puts in more work from grad students.

The title is a misnomer...
... since it leads you to believe that its subject matter is interesting.

After ordering this book and wading through its first few chapters, I had one overwhelming thought:

Thank you, Amazon.com, for your marvelous return policy.

Bloom is one of our better critics in terms of readability, but still... Unless you have a great appetite for arid erudition, just stick to reading the poetry itself. This book has more to do with some pet theory of Bloom's than with Stevens' poetry, or our climate--both of which could have been fascinating subjects for a book.

The personality of "interpretive" poetics
Bloom has written this book after an obviously long devotion to reading Stevens and to developing his critical methods, in one of its modes, to a fine precision. The reader of this book benefits most by a slow absorbtion of the varied terminology that Bloom had accumulated previous to this work and the additions then newly made to it. The approach to Stevens' poetry is immediate in its variance from most previous criticism and especially passive reading, or "weak misreading" as B. would call it. To follow him closely is to slough the innocence of idealizing all poetry as committed to presenting its own meaning. Unwitting believers of the like, deterred by Bloom's criticism for appearing so staunchly definitive (though an immediate antidote to a belief in the floppiness of poetry), havn't realized that beyond his belief (on particularly fine display) in the strong potential of formalizing tropes and decoding of intertextualities, is the existance in poetry of its reader's 'becoming' the text that is read, and to do it inventively, eccentrically, and considerately is essentially to further poetry itself.

Great buy available
I found this book...and the discussion of error trapping isgreat, better than I've found elsewhere.

Succint Coverage of VB
Amazon's author listing is not right: the authors listed inside the book are Peter Norton, Harold Davis and Phyllis Davis. The Norton book on each VB version has a different set of authors, so it is not clear that the same quality always applies.

A great deal of VB has to do with Forms and Controls, which are discussed but are not my point of view. I like this book because of Chapter 4: Programming in VB. This chapter gives a very concise and clear summary of all the language features under the rubric "What's still BASIC in Visual Basic?" Chapter 4 also includes class modules, and some more details are given later in Chapter 14 in an example that controls Excel from VB. I also appreciated Chapter 12: Error-Handling and Debugging, which explains both coding with the On Error feature of VB, as well as the use of the VB debugging tools.

These items comprise about 1/10th of the book. But because of its age I found this book for much less than its original price, which made the book worthwhile even so.

The book is good for studying with instructor
I would recommend this book for studying with instructor, not by yourself. It introduces some of the concepts in a rather quick manner without giving you the in-depth introduction to the topic. I taught couple of people VB and I find that Norton's is very helpful for the students, but as I have mentioned, you need instructor's guidance with it.

Superficial!
Shallow. Seems to be a rehash and compilation of other grief books and materials. Many, many other books much better.

Short But Deep!
At the time of loss and intense grieving, one usually doesn't have the time or concentration for a long, detailed book on how to live with the experience. The ABC's of Healthy Grieving provides a quick dose of reassurance and instant strategies for dealing with the pain. While easy to read cover to cover, it's the kind of book that you can open up to any page and receive the comfort and information you need. It shows a sensitivity to our differences yet is written in a way that let's us know we are not the only one feeling this way. I highly recommend this book for anyone dealing with loss, not just the loss of a loved one through death but the loss of a job, a relationship, or even a comfort zone.
