This book does not quite fit into the mould of the romance genre because the romance is kept in the sidelines, and only develops in its due course. The book is about Kati, the protagonist from the very beginning of the book, and about her unbreakable bond with her family's legacy, the Waldhotel Becker. Set in Baden-Baden, the story develops in that dreamy city. I felt the beauty of that Black Forest hideaway through Tracy Stern's words. Kati grows and becomes an adult in that amazing place and in that exquiste hotel that decays gracefully after the death of her grandfather, the great Karl-Gustav. No one else, not Kati's fragile mother, her weak father, or her self-sustaining sister, has the powerful force of love and will to restore Karl-Gustav's legacy to his family. Kati takes the reins of control when the hotel is ready to collapse in debt and through sheer strength of character she returns glamour and visitors to her birthright. Life in its fullest, its brightest, and its most devastating moments are highlighted in the story. Kati picks up after each fall and works again until she obtains all the love and reward she rightly deserves. The typographical errors in the book could not be missed, even as I was gripped in the enthralling tale, and the publishers cannot be commended for allowing so many mistakes to pass the editor's pen. The story does not have much depth, but it has charming width. It has a well-wrought plot that held me for two days until I finished the book.

Kerry has got to be one the most self-centered characters I've ever read in a book! So many parts of the story are unbelievable and would never be the way real people would deal with situations like these. I don't want to give away what happens in the book (in case someone actually would want to read it) but the way she totally leaves Brad's family out of any of her decisions and doesn't even tell them what is going on is just awful, if you ask me. Well, I guess that's why it's called "fiction".
