University-textbook style, with great organization, readable two-color text, comprehensive index, and discussion of COBOL topics (like reference modification) that I have not seen properly addressed in other COBOL books.

Distinction is also made throughout the text between COBOL 74 and COBOL 85, with separate code examples for each.

Detailed discussion of every topic, good examples and the self-test is really helpful.

i am an adjunct professor utilizing this as the textbook for an undergraduate cobol class. it has more then sufficient examples, and the self-test is helpful for the students.

When people talk about New York's Golden Age, they're usually referring to the late 1800s, but I would argue that New York's true Golden Age was the 1920s. With over 800 pages, this tome is difficult to handle, but nevertheless, it covers New York at its peak of glory, and is the best of Robert Stern's books about New York architecture (e.g., New York 1880, New York 1900, New York 1960). Especially noteworthy are the beautiful b&w photos, averaging more than one per page. There are also approximately 40 floor plans, although most page space is given over to text. The authors give attention to both exteriors and interiors of the era's buildings. Each chapter covers a specific type of building, with a special emphasis on Rockefeller Center, the 1939 World's Fair, 57th Street, and the works of architects Kahn, Walker, and Hood.

This is an encyclopedic description of New York as I remember it from my student years. The numerous neat clean photographs and drawings present an idealized city. But what is additionally fascinating are the rich background histories that illustrate the social and economic complexity of Gotham. I enjoy this book at two levels: one, as a valuable artistic document, two, as an encapsulation of the memories and fantasies of my youth. I bought a sport coat at Finchleys; I lived in the Greenpoint Housing Project; I wanted to work or live in those buildings; I wanted to draw like those architects and engineers. I loved these last embodiments of Art Deco construction and the grand civic projects.

This history presents New York from the viewpoint of the upper crust and the insulated, the planning was grand and well funded. The slums, the dirt, the menace of some streets and the ethnic tapestry are ignored. Just as memory tends to purge the unpleasent, so does this book, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much.

What a beautiful display of true Architecture for Architectures' sake. Yeah, you may need a bit of $$ to personally afford buildings with this calibur of workmanship, but it will be well worth it and timeless. Builders and purchasers of todays' Suburb homes need to look to great works like these to realize the real issue of urban sprawl.

The book highlights some of RAMSA's great works from Rotterdam to California with big glossy images and attractive typography. This one is a real winner.

Bob Stern is probably America's greatest living architect, and this book covers his best projects yet. If you're sick of modernist boredom and post-modern silliness, this neotraditionalist architect is a breath of fresh air. Of course, he also proves he can do modern styles better than most modernists. He did a building in my neighborhood and everyone loves it. This book is beautifully photographed and has useful text.

Everyone has his or her own what-if scenarios and Mr. Robert A. M. Stern would play a central role in mine. For some people it's cars, or planes, houses, or paintings by the Old Masters. In my case the list is all of the above. So were I ever to make the Fortune 500, a home by one of the Greatest Architects would top the list.

This book covers a relatively short period of this Artist's career, specifically 1987-1992. It also happens to include many projects that were built in New England where I live. I had seen some of his work in person, and other examples in magazines, but it wasn't until I did some research that I found he was responsible for nearly all the projects I had so enjoyed. Many know one project in Massachusetts as Mr. Stern designed the Norman Rockwell Museum in the Berkshire Hills of Stockbridge. He also designed several buildings for Disney in Orlando, as well as numerous Colleges, and residences both urban and rural.

There is a fairly good chance his work is known to many readers because of some of the project's locales and the frequency that so many Americans visit them. While walking in a city with towers looming above it is often impossible to get far enough away to see what is blocking out the sun, this book solves that problem. And chances are Mr. Stern's work is not preventing the sun from reaching you, as his designs seem to belong where they are. His work and the surrounding areas accommodate each other as opposed to many Architects whose goal is to leave their mark. Once you become familiar with his work you will see the statements made by his buildings leave as strong an impression as any. Mr. Stern is a master designer, and his elegant, classically influenced work stands out because of what it is as opposed to how tall, how ostentatious, or how intrusive.

Even if you have never thought of picking up a book featuring the work of an Architect, I suggest if you do, this is a great place to start, and will not disappoint. His work is accessible; it is not the 15 minutes of fame trendy nonsense that is as silly and pretentious as it is transient.

I highly recommend this definitive work on architects Delano & Aldrich. The book is amazingly well-researched and well-written as well as beautifully illustrated with both historic and contemporary photographs. It's a must for the library of anyone interested in architecture!

I have been interested in the work of Delano and Aldrich for a number of years, and this book provides the best information I have been able to get so far.

The descriptions are deep and serious. I also liked the great pictures. The impact of their work is historic to say the least.

What a fabulous insight into the Architecture firm of Delano & Adrich. This book with its beautiful photographs and engaging essay provide an invaluable tool for all architectural enthusiasts: from the average architecture buff to those involved in scholarly research.

I'm most impressed that the authors not only sought to perform research on the buildings themselves, but moreover, examined the partners and the social influences of the times. I feel we gain so much from the writers thru their experience of having read Delano's letters in archive at Yale!

This book should stand as a model for future chronologist of architectural history. It is truly a wonderful presentation - the best that I've seen published to date.
