Expensive but the single best COBOL book I've encountered
University-textbook style, with great organization, readable two-color text, comprehensive index, and discussion of COBOL topics (like reference modification) that I have not seen properly addressed in other COBOL books.

Distinction is also made throughout the text between COBOL 74 and COBOL 85, with separate code examples for each.

A must-have for COBOL programmers!
Detailed discussion of every topic, good examples and the self-test is really helpful.

excellent textbook
i am an adjunct professor utilizing this as the textbook for an undergraduate cobol class. it has more then sufficient examples, and the self-test is helpful for the students.

Best book yet for those trying to get a job in police work.
The book was easy to read and covered the whole hiring process. I was getting really poor oral interview ratings, until I read this book by Ron Stern. Last Oral Board I took I got #1, and hope to get a job soon. California. I really recommend Stern's "Taking an Oral Interview in Law Enforcent" audio tape, in the "Application Preparation Kit&.

Excellent guide on how to get a job in law enforcement.
An excellent choice for the applicant. It has chapters for applications, physical agility, back ground investigations, etc. Easy to read and understand.

Becoming a stage manager
A few years ago, I got my first of many stage management jobs. I had absolutley no idea what to do. So I checked out a little book intitled, Stage Management:a guide of practical techniques. I could not put the book down!(and I'm not into self-help books!) It was filled with great ideas on how to be helpful not only to the director and the actors, but to yourself too. I still follow many of the techniques today. It really helped me out on my first job, and is still doing so now. I fully reccommend this book to all new stage managers, it gives you ideas of organization, how to deal with contrary actors and directors.

BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK
I ALSO HAVE TO USE THIS BOOK FOR MY CLASS AND I'VE HAVENT EVEN GOT PAST CHAPTER 1. I GET LOST IN WHAT EVER POINT THE AUTHOR IS TRYING TO MAKE WHY DO THEY HAVE TO MAKE THINGS SO COMPLICATED.

It's not a Book to Learn From
I use this COBOL book for my class that I have at College, and I have worked through it and I know no more than I did when I strated. I feel strongly that this book is not a good source to learn COBOL, and is not user freindly.

Mediocre
If you enjoy COBOL enough, maybe you'll really try to sit down with this book. I had to use this book for a COBOL college class and, boy, was it not that great. The book is very verbose, like COBOL itself.

I recommend not purchasing this book and instead getting a different book on COBOL. On the other hand, if you truly love COBOL then maybe this is the book for you. All I know is that I did not learn anything from this book except how to ruin a perfectly good afternoon.
