Great publication of THE great American architect
Many people don't know who Richard Morris Hunt is. That is a pure travesty when we think about all the accomplishments he has made to our society. For example, the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yorktown Monument, just to name a few. Any one interested in architecture or awed by its magnificence should invest in this unique documentation of the education, practice, projects, and drawings of the premier American architect, Richard Morris Hunt.

Bette Davis: Film Star (Library of Famous Women Series)
Published in School & Library Binding by Blackbirch Marketing (1994)
Authors: Gene Brown and Richard Steins
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

An excellent juvenile biography of film star Bette Davis
Although I was surprised that it was Bette Davis rather than Katharine Hepburn that was the focus on the Film Star volume in the Library of Famous Women, Gene Brown does turn in an excellent juvenile biography. The key is that Brown does not simply provide biographical information about Davis, but keeps the focus on the significance of her career. Brown argues that Davis was the first woman who played roles that portrayed women realistically, which is certainly something worth noting. Young readers will also learn about the Studio System, which represents an entirely different world of making movies than what they hear about today. Brown also pays attention to details, such as the way Davis used her body, that made her stand out as an actress. It is because Brown understands about films and acting, that elevates this book. I certainly might wonder if young readers have seen any films starring Bette Davis, especially since so few of them ended up being made in color, which is often a prerequisite for viewing by kids today, but I have little doubt that if they read this book they will be interested in seeing some of her work. This book is illustrated with mostly black & white publicity shots from Davis's films, as well as a few color shots, including one of her made up as Queen Elizabeth for "The Virgin Queen." Now if Brown would just do a book like this about Hepburn. Other volumes in this series look at Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, Mother Teresa, Painter Georgia O'Keefe, Anne Frank, and Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Between a Stein and a hard place!
Though not the first Stein reader, this edition presents some additional selections from the works of one of the 20th century's most influential writers. It gives readers a taste of some of her less familiar works with brief comments beginning each selection from editor, Richard Kostelanetz. His introduction also gives readers a good perspective of Stein's life and the development of her writing. Many still view Stein's work as difficult or hard to comprehend, but exposure to her works in this kind of reader format, allows for re-reading and comparison, which after a time makes her work more and more accessible and enjoyable. The publisher's decision to print editions simultaneously in paper and hardcover was a very good idea, making copies available for both the collector and classroom use.

O.K. but others much better!
With three new books out about PCOS I eagerly looked forward to this book. What good info! Easy to read! Maybe too easy? The information found could be found in intro articles about the condition. the other two new books out at the latter end of 2000 are much more information for the "in need of info patient" If you know very little this book is a great start, if you have the basics down look elsewhere.

Easy to Read, Good Beginner Book
I read this book when it first came out. I thought that it was very informative and a good for someone wanting learn the basics of PCOS. It is very clearly written and I liked that it touched on topics such as getting pregnant and alternative therapy.

Good primer, great non-traditional med info.
This book is very easy to read and will be a great help to the newly diagnosed woman with pcos.

It offers practical information that supplements info found on the major PCOS sites like SoulCysters.com, or PCOSupport.org.

What sets this book apart from other pcos books is the comprehensive section on non-traditional treatments for PCOS, like herbs.

Bottom line, imo: Worth buying!

Connecting Character Falls Short of Just That
Connecting Character to Conduct was obviously written with good intentions of ways to improve our schools, however, falls short of the mark for giving educators new and interesting ideas. The book is centered on the idea of RICE (respect, impulse control, compassion, and equity) and discusses ways to implement it. The implementation of RICE mostly revolves around parent workshops, letters home, parent involvement, classroom management, and the school working together as a community. These are strategies that educators generally learn in their education credential programs. This book does have a few good moments however. I did enjoy the fact that the book includes pupil personnel, classified, and administrative staff in the strategies. There are also some good examples in the appendix of the book of better ways to record and survey students regarding their behavior, needs, and feelings in regards to their education. The appendix of the book may be worth a quick scan, but the rest of the book leaves a lot to be desired.

Great "How -to" for building character
In our multicultural society there are as many views of appropriate behavior as there are ethnic, national, or societal groups or religious codes of belief. Today, perhaps more than ever, schools need to cope with the challange of infusing values into the character of the young. What is a public code of behavior acceptable to all segments of this diversified American society and how do we integrate it into the education of our children? Educators have struggled with this question for the last hundred years. Finally there is a hands-on practical guidebook that gives the principal as well as the classroom teacher a well-defined method of communicating what might be called an American Public Morality. The RICE (R-respect, I impulse control C compassion E quity) Program as developed in Connecting Character to Conduct by Stein, Richin, and Banyon is must reading for all educators. This slender volume will change your life as a teacher.

A Solid Resource on the Subject of IBD
This compilation of various articles written by IBD experts from across the country is an official Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America publication and that endorsement alone should indicate its quality and content. Every chapter in this book is well written and scrupulously up-to-date with excellent references and resources. Chapter subjects are very holistic in that both the medical and emotional aspects of IBD are represented. There is even a chapter on the use of alternative medicine in the treatment of IBD! Definitely purchase this book for your library.
