One of the Best
Ray Stedman is one of the great men of the 20th century. Pastor of the Peninsula Bible Church for half a century, he was the author of more than 30 books. He brought a fresh and vital understanding to the Bible and influenced countless men and women with his ministry, including Chuck Swindoll, who said "Ray Stedman is what I want to be when I grow up." This book is a wonderful introduction to Ray and his marvelous teaching. My wife and I have given many copies to friends. All of Ray's sermons can be yours free at pbc.org.

Excellent insights!
It is amazing how brightly this deceased author's light is still shining! In my opinion, Mr. Stedman was truly blessed with an understanding of God's Word, but more - he had a gift of being able to write and share this knowledge with others.

Behind history

Why evil in the Church & is an earthly utopia possible?
Behind History does not concern itself with particular historical events but a general understanding of the nature of God's work in the world since the beginning of the Church. This is explained though the parables found in Mathew 13: the sower and the seeds, wheat & weeds in the field, mustard seed, leavened bread, hidden treasure, valuable pearl, and the fish caught in the net.

There are two widely accepted views concerning these parables. One view sees the mustard seed and leavened bread parables demonstrating the expansion of Christianity. Stedman shows that this view is not consistent linguistically or structurally with the imagery of the rest of the parables or the rest of Scripture. Rather, he shows that they illustrate the evil that infiltrates the Church and remains there until the end of the age (when Christ returns to establish His kingdom on Earth). Likewise, the parables of the hidden treasure and valuable pearl, which have been understood by some as the seeker discovering Christ and giving up all to obtain Him, Stedman shows to be inconsistent with the rest of the imagery in this parable cluster. He demonstrates that the man finding the treasure and the pearl is Christ and the treasure and the valuable pearl represent the believers.

The book is useful to those interested in understanding why there is evil in the Christian Church or are wondering if a Christian utopia on earth can ever be established. Stedman illustrates through these parables that until Christ returns evil men will always be associated with the Church and that a Christian utopia on earth will not occur.

I disagree with his assessment that the treasure and valuable pearl in the parable of the hidden treasure and valuable pearl represent Israel and the Church, respectively. The treasure and valuable pearl as different depictions of the same thing - all believers - seems more consistent with the rest of the parable cluster. This is a minor criticism and overall I found the book to be a good commentary on Matthew 13.

Looking to find meaning in Life?
The book talks about meaning of life by expanding what the searhcer (a.k.a Solomon) has been written in the book of Ecclesiastes. It is quite interesting on how he manage to explain what the topics in the book, verse by verse continually. It's a good book if you want to understand about life. Solutions were given and you would understand it if and only if you believe in the existence of God.

Fresh Look on Attaining Peace
Ron Hutchcraft offers a fresh perspective on obtaining peace in a stress-filled world. I had not really thought about the fact that we should pursue peace, not just wait for it to fall into our lap. Even though you feel like things are out of control in your life, there are some things you can do to make changes toward peace. Hutchcraft is informative but not preachy. He readily acknowledges his own downfalls in the pursuit of peace and leaves the reader feeling as if he is not alone in his own struggles.

I would recommend this book to the busy executive, the blue-collar worker, the office worker as well as the housewife and stay-at-home Mom. There are few people who can say they are totally isolated from stress (maybe only those who are comotose), so this book can help almost anyone who wants to work on this area of their life. I've placed it in a prominent position in my personal library.

Good, but a little lacking
This is one of a series of books about earth science written by Mr. Carroll. He does an admirable effort of integrating the record of nature with the Bible and succeeds on many points. My only disappointment is that he misses several key Scriptures, such as the description of the atmosphere in Psalm 104 and Genesis 1, which could help refute the fallacious canopy theory.

Biblical and today's standards of living
In my opinion: A book that tries to stand between being an academic one and a preaching. In fact it is much closer to the second. It has some traces of exegesis, but only to use them as a basis to proclaim the way we have to live as we wait for the second coming. A good book for someone who would like to compare the biblical principles and the today standards. Finally, the relevant town is called Thessaloniki until today, and not Salonica (p.13).
