Women's Rights and Nothing Less: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton (Feminist Voices)

Very Enlightening
Growing up in the 70's and 80's as a male in this country, I had lost the understanding of the conditions in which women lived relatively recently
Ms. Bohannon did an excellent job of shinning the light of knowledge into the darkness of ignorance.
Well done!

Independence, fortitude and a brilliant woman.
The author has written a clear concise description of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her role in the leadership of the critical opening phase of the women's movement. The causes for which Stanton fought were radical for the nation to contemplate at the time. And Stanton's convictions were more than a self-interest as confirmed by her support of other like human rights causes. The predjudices and mores of society of Stanton's time proved to be immense obstacles. The practical difficulties of communications coupled with the level of transportation and media control would overwhelm most people today.

The author's explanation of Stanton's upbringing and the influence of her father, husband and colleagues provides valuable insights about the person, but also illustrates for others what they can accomplish by blending conviction with an ongoing explortion of the issues.

This book should be read by all age groups. In particular, the book warrants reading by High School sudents of both genders. It is not excessive to say that the book deals with basic issues in the evolution of US society and the debates that linger on today.

Great Book About a Fascinating Woman
This is a great book about a fascinating woman. Too little has been written about Elizabeth Cady Stanton, yet she was the first to call for women's suffrage in 1848 and she also authored the amendment granting women the right to vote. In addition, she was the first woman to actively promote a woman's right to a divorce and to control her reproductive choices. Lisa Frederiksen Bohannon's well written biography of Stanton brings to life this important figure in history. I loved it and my granddaughters loved it!

Brilliant and fascinating, tem que ler este livro!!!!!!
This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. Stanton was a 19th century women's rights activist who had a complex, rationalist personal theology that changed and evolved thoughout her lifetime. This book reveals this theology, her weaknesses, and her. Recomendo este livro altamente!!!!!!

An inspiring story detailing Ms. Stanton's experience.
Reading the book not only helped me to understand the political and legal environment for women during Ms. Stanton's life, but also helped me to understand Ms. Stanton as a person and her inner drive for equality. Her narrative provides us with stories to illustrate her passion for justice and her perservance in working toward the woman's vote. We get a picture of the territories and the states during those early times as she stuggles to get to places by means that would seem alien to us now.

Ms. Stanton demonstrates that her partnership with Susan B. Anthony was inevitable as their strengths complimented each other to help them fulfill their work toward equality. Although neither women lived to see the amendment pass, there are no signs of regret for all the years of dedication. We know she knows it will happen. Through her reality, we share the frustrations, the angers, the joys, and the triumphs.

I liked knowing Ms. Stanton had written the book and feel I got to know her courage, wit, and character by reading it. I highly recommend the book.

Unfinished Business
This is the book that got Elizabeth Cady Stanton booted out of the official women's movement of her time. Woman Suffrage was by no means the only work left undone at the time of her death. Stanton knew how damaging the Bible was to women. What most people do not realize is that her co-authors also knew about the Goddess and the fact that she preceeded male gods by thousands of years. They stuck to the "scriptures" as the best ammunition and they also cleared ground for women who wish to move beyond. This book is an excellent foundation for any intellegent woman who is also interested in religion. Still radical after all these years.

A great Biblical commentary that has stood the test of time
Stanton and her cohorts wrote The Women's Bible over 100 years ago and yet these commentaries are still as pertinent and valuable today as they were at the time they were written. She and others run rings around many of the tenets of organized religion, often disproving them with the very Scriptures on which they are founded! A great read for anyone who seeks equality for women in organized religion as well as those who wish to see a radical visionary (even by today's standards) at work in the 19th century!

Beautiful and imaginative pictures.
This story takes place in the late 1800's when Mrs. Stanton-the famous women's rights activist-was still alive. It deals with a young girl, Cordelia, who wants to ride Mrs. Stanton's horse. Mrs. Stanton instead of letting her ride the horse tells her about her childhood experiences. Mrs. Stanton also also makes a great impact on Cordelia when she tries to vote and is not allowed. This in turn inspires Cordelia to stand up for herself.

It is a well-written story that shows what life was like for women before they got to vote. It shows that injustices can be overcome when we put our minds to it and when we don't let what others say get in our way of realizing our dreams. This would be a good story to read to 5th and 6th graders as an introduction to American history in this century.

The pictures are beautiful. They recall images of a by-gone era. It is interesting that men and boys are painted in darker colors, while Cordelia wears lighter colors.

an in-depth look of the forces needed to overcome inertia
Mr. Miller does a great job describing Seneca Falls, NY in the mid to late 20th century and gives a great perspective of the emotions and thoughts a young man goes through growing up. Let alone the wonderful look at the suffrage movement of the United States and the forces that led them. A must read for someone looking for the connection of the suffrage movement and how it has affected modern day man.

WAKE UP TO WHAT WE OWE THE SUFFRAGISTS !
"The Road to Seneca Falls" will take contemporary readers back to the time of their great, Great, GREAT-grandparents. Can today's 4th and 5th graders identify with what may seem ancient history? Will Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her sausage curls draw young readers?

Let's hope Gwenyth Swain's story ignites interest & even passion
in 'Women's Rights' and the tough fight to change conditions which today's girls can hardly believe ever existed: NO college for women! NO rights to personal or real property! and definitely NO VOTE!

Elizabeth was never a shy violet. She was bright and determined. The story of her childhood makes her seem genuinely real. Her beliefs were authentic and she never turned her back on them, or those who stood with her, persistent and dedicated.

As a fan of the author, I was delighted to see her picture on the back cover of the library edition. She is shown at the truly meaningful national historical monment to women's rights, an exciting museum complex in Seneca Falls -- in upstate New York.
This is a town which many people identify as the backdrop for the movie classic "It's a Wonderful Life". The museum draws people from all over the USA and world and gives one the opportunity to pay tribute to women who did battle for a worthy cause. I could bridge many decades and pose next to a hero, Frederick Douglass!

I recommend this 5-star book for its well-researched story, and useful bibliography. It will help growing readers as they learn to choose values for their own lives.

Words to live by
This book is a must read for every woman -- and man. Elizabeth Cady Stanton's words are as relevant today as they were when she wrote this speech. Not only is "Solitude of Self" a powerful political treatise, but also a spiritual argument for why everyone in society deserves an equal education. The Paris Press edition is beautiful. It makes the perfect gift for any woman or girl, and should be required reading in every schoolroom in the country!

Wonderful recounting of many important women
This book fills a glaring need in history books. Not many people know more about Susan B. Anthony than she was one the dollar coin. This book corrects that oversight, and then some. Not only does the book give a balanced and well thought out look at Anthony and Stanton, the reader is also introduced to many, many other women who worked so hard for women rights.
I especially liked that the book didn't shy away from some of these women's more controversial stands, such as taking on the black person's cause.
All in all, a very good book.

Every Woman should read this book!
This book provides insight and history on the struggle that women went through to get the right to vote. It includes all kinds of interesting background and perspectives. It was a real eye opener for me and I'm giving it as a gift to all the young women I know.

What every woman should know
This book was an eye opener for me. Every woman should read this book to understand the fight for our right to vote. These women devoted their lives to something they knew they would never even see in their live time! Its a story of courage and strength. It's makes one feel proud to be a woman.

Semi-Informational but Long winded
I would reccomend this book but only to someone extremely interested in the subject. If you are looking to be amused-this is not a good choice. This is definately an educational resource to be used to understand this woman's life, not to be interpreted as a cozy novel to curl up by the fire with... but as I said, if you are a real woman's history buff- I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Mesmerizing
I found this book totally mesmerizing. I thought the author did a good job in covering Stanton's later years. She was thorough and honest. I learned a lot and would recommend it to anyone interested in the origins of women's history.

A Pleasing Read For an Educatd Mind
Wow! How many synonyms are there for GOOD? Let's see: magnificent, wonderful, amazing, fabulous (and for the teens, totally fab) great, weel, I could go on and on, but hey- just read the book for yourself. Pig out of FAB books, man.
