Not at all biased...I promise!
If it wasn't for John, I may never have learned to take entomology both as seriously and as lightly as I take it now! This is the field guide you've been waiting for, combining great photos and drawings with distribution data and colourful anecdotes. Quite possibly the ultimate tiger beetle book! P.S., that's me with the tattoos!

Tiger Beetles of Alberta
John Acorn's "Tiger Beetles of Alberta" is a model of the kind of book that serves the needs of amateur naturalists and professional biologists wanting to identify the plants and animals they encounter. Since most of the literature is either arcane or (more often) unavailable, books like Acorn's fulfill a real need. The text will not only allow the reader to identify the beetle species, but it also provides information about the beetle's ecology, behavior, and related topics. Range maps also help the reader identify the species. The photographs and drawings are spectacular. Yet two "quirky" features distinguish this book: first, the haiku Acorn has composed for each species; second, the anecdotes he provides about tiger beetle people. The book is not only informative; it is entertaining. Additional features include a discussion of tiger beetle conservation. maintaining tiger beetles in captivity, observing tiger beetles, and a useful bibliography.

Obsession : The Fbi's Legendary Profiler Probes the Psyches of Killers, Rapists and Stalkers and Their Victims and Tells How to Fight Back (Abridged Edition)

Stalking The Monster
Having read all of the books John Douglas has put out regarding his time as an FBI profiler, the first thing that came to mind is why he didn't crash and burn from the constant drumbeat of depravity. To say that we need someone of this level of commitment to stand between us and that kind of immorality is an understatement. I thought I would not like grim and graphic descriptions of his work. I was wrong. The book is taut, enlightening and scary, all at the same time. He cites specific cases including the preppie murder case and brought to the surface aspects of the case that I had been previously unaware. It is tough to make such a narrative read as a thriller but I think that Douglas and his co-author Mark Olshaker have done the best they can with the glut of the material. I highly recommend it to any and all who desire to make sense out of the senseless. Douglas and Olshaker do their best to make it understandable.

Indecent Obsession
Yet another classic expose of the sadistic sociopath written by the man who knows them best - John Douglas. In this book, John meticulously describes 2 types of obsessions - the obsessions of the sociopathic sex criminals who prey on society, and the obsessions which drive law enforcement officials who, very often risk their own safety and sanity in order to capture these monsters and bring about justice.

Throughout his quarter century in the FBI, John gained valuable knowledge. He learned how serial offenders "profile" their potential victims to test their vulnerability. He learned what ruses they employ to lure unsuspecting victims away from areas of safety. And as he graphically illustrates in the tragic stories of Jennifer Levin, Katie Souza Hanley, and Stephanie Schmidt, he learned how sometimes we can unfortunately place our trust in the wrong person, a person who is quite literally "a wolf in sheep's clothing."

So instead of speaking disparagingly about John, we should realise that we have cause to be grateful to him. He has such great insight into the minds of these human demons, and because of his lecturing and writing, he has undoubtedly saved many lives. We should thank him in any way possible - one day his experience and insight might help save our own life or the life of a loved one. He has given us valuable advice about how to keep ourselves and our children safe. He has showed us how we can turn profiling to our own advantage, how we can use it and our own survival instincts to keep ourselves safe. Undoubtedly this type of knowledge is certainly just as important as the knowledge of how to perform adequate, life saving first aid treatment.

John Douglas- One of the Real American Heroes
Without a doubt, John Douglas is extraordinary and a very dear man. He has dealt with, on a DAILY basis, for years, into the horrific and graphic details of the aftermath of serial killers, serial rapists, stalkers, mutilators. He has gotten into the minds of those criminals and looked at the crime through their point of view. Being able to do this process, called profiling, he has identified these killers and sexual predators. Still with all that he has seen, he has given so much compassion and empathy to the victims of these acts of violence. John Douglas has tried to also get the knowledge to the people so that we can all become more aware. He has traveled to hospital emergency rooms to inform doctors and staff about evidence needed for rape cases. He has also conducted seminars in colleges. This is an excellent book that John Douglas has written. Mr. Douglas is very respected by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in which he worked for over twenty-five years. He became head of the Investigative Support Unit in 1979. May John's story go on. He's one of the real American heros. As a victim of attempted rape and child molestation myself and from all of the other victims in the U.S. that he has helped, I would like to extend a very heartfelt and deep appreciation to John Douglas.

The Dream Stalker

Predictable Politically Correct Environmental Party Line
I enjoyed the first two novels in this series, but not this one. Her attorney protagonist became a shrill, irrational, self righteous zealot with no facts to support her breathless polemics. (All it would take is an unspecified "natural disaster" and then The Terrible Thing would happen!). The contrived "factual" rationalization for her position was as predictible as it was silly. This is a novel long on overly emotional protagonists drenched in self absorbed angst and prolix, confession prone bad guys, but short on rational plot development. It makes one long for Laconic Joe Leaphorn from Hillerman's novels. If you like the manufactured emotional trapeze of a soap opera, you will like this book.

Short on Science
I have bought Ms. Coel's other mysteries partly because her protagonists and mysteries are interesting, and partly because they are set in my home state. In this particular story, however, science was murdered in addition to a drunken cowboy, a tribal chairman, and odd assorted other unfortunates. Irritating careless errors certainly decreased my enjoyment of the book and detracted from the storyline. For instance, Ms. Coel has lightning flashes that follow closely after claps of thunder, "underground lakes" that are filled up with water pumped into oil wells to increase production, and "one to the minus six" being "much less" than "one in ten million"...(one to the minus six equals one). I found myself hunting for the next mistake instead of enjoying the mystery. Better luck next time, I hope.

A beautiful blend of mystery and mysticism
Arapaho lawyer Vicky Holden plays the Lone Ranger as she opposes the construction of a nuclear waste storage silo on the Legeau Ranch near the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Most of her tribe see the silo as an opportunity for jobs, but Vicky worries that the site will harm her people.

Her vocal opposition has stirred up the enmity of her opponents. One of them wants to quiet Vicky and all other opposition to the construction by using any means at his/her disposal. One opponent to the site is killed and Vicky nearly becomes a victim also. She turns to her one known ally, Father John O'Malley. Working as a team, the intrepid amateur sleuths begin to investigate why someone wants any opponents to the silo silenced. As they dig deeper, the pair becomes aware of their own attraction to each other. Still, they must solve the case if they plan to survive the silo construction.

Margaret Coel is rightfully being acknowledged as the female Tony Hillerman. The lead protagonists are wonderful characters and the story line is a very interesting blend of a modern problem (nuclear waste) and Native American folk lore. More novels like THE DREAM STALKER and readers will soon be calling Tony Hillerman the male Margaret Coel.

Blah Blah Blah
This was one of the worst SVU books in the series. Sure, it seems intriguing by the summary on the back of the book, but hey, it ain't all that. (Excuse the slang.)It lacked the suspense and excitement that usually pushes the reader to keep on turning those pages. I found myself dreading each chapter and anticipating the final conclusion of the story. I didn't even get the conclusion. The book is a two-part series, so if I wish to read what happens to Elizabeth and the gang, I have to drag myself to the nearest bookstore (preferably Amazon, wink, wink) and purchase Part Two. And so far, I haven't seen Part Two on any bookshelves yet. Overall, this book seemed to drag on monotonously with Elizabeth freaking out over William White halluciations. Half the time I didn't know if she was dreaming or if she was seeing reality. I suppose Part Two will finally put an end to my distress when the hallucinations are explained and a conclusion is found. After all, I can't read a book and not find out the ending, can I? (Even if it does mean buying a second part.)

fab book that rocks
Listen. This book is good. I don't care if lovely William has returned for about the fifth time. I like him. I also know the fact that Tom and Elizabeth were born to be together not that wussy ugly Todd. So what if the book isn't dwelling much in the old reality area. You don't read books for reality, you read them to be entertained (otherwise you'd read an encyclopedia instead) and this book is highly entertaining. I live in England and my friend got it over to me. Bravo to the writers. I look and londg for the next installment of wonderful Will.

An AMAZING THRILLER!
This book is definetly good it's more interesting to read than the second one but I really enjoy this book more..

Elizabeth and Tom Watts (her boyfriend) seem to be having trouble in their relationship. Elizabeth ex-boyfriend William White who Elizabeth thought died in a Car Accident really didn't. William White and Elizabeth were really in love until one day Elizabeth finds out that he is a racist and was involve in an attack of her bestfriend Nina and her boyfriend Ryan. Elizabeth expose the news all over campus. But when William White returns is he looking for a second chance or revenge?? This book will leave you amaze!

The Stalker Affair

drawn out
A true story that sounds like a great tale. It has everything, cover-up, government conspiracy, hero gets too close to the truth, assassinations etc. Why the low score? It goes on and on without end. His investigation come abruptly to a halt midway through the book and there are four chapters in a row of the author saying "I was doing nothing." in many unintersting ways. The narrative is painfully slow and uninteresting. "A crackling good yarn" it isn't. Maybe a good yawn. Highly recommended to insomniacs.

Honest Cop Framed For Uncovering Death Squads.
John Stalker; one of Britain's highest-ranking policemen, was sent to Occupied Ireland to investigate allegations that the Royal Ulster Constabulary includes Death Squads. The day before his scheduled interrogation, under caution, of Occupied Ireland's ranking RUC officer, John Hermon (now "Sir John"), he himself was falsely charged with "associating with criminals" and removed from the investigation. Though completely exonerated, Stalker still pays the price for his statement; "I'm a loyal British subject but I draw the line at murder." His 16-volume official report remains suppressed, he was ruined and his landmark book is still smeared (see accompanying review). Stalker heroically attempted in 1986 what McPhilemy's "The Committee" accomplishes in 1998. Read both books - they complement and confirm each another; also "An Index of Deaths From the Conflict in Ireland" by Malcolm Sutton. The officially-vilified John Stalker is about to be publicly vindicated along with the many decent British army officers and men who, since then, have paid horrible prices for refusing to commit war crimes in Ireland. Read Stalker! He, an honest Englishman, tried to end Britain's centuries-long genocide in Ireland in 1986. He will help to end it now if enough people discover his riveting "The Stalker Affair."
