spectacular
I really enjoyed this book. I especially liked the exciting parts like when Sacagawea and Pomp almost died. I also liked the part when the bears attacked them. I hope I will find another book as exciting as this one!

Sacagewea - an inspiring tale
Sacagawea by Judith St. Martin is a well-written historical novel for older children and young adults filled with rich descriptions and characters. Judith St. Martin, a noted children's biographer, used Lewis and Clarks' journals and other original material to tell a good story. My eight and a half year-old daughter says the book really inspired her. It made her think about what it would be like if she lived during Sacagewea's time and traveled with Lewis and Clark, who became her companions. The book is informative and best of all it has that 5 star quality: it makes you wonder and want to know more! We learned that Sacagewea means bird woman. Illustrated maps tracing the Lewis and Clark trail are helpful. My daughter adds that this book is an excellent choice for anybody who likes to stop and think about adventures and people who have made remarkable contributions to our world. This is the opening of a poem she wrote after reading the book. "One day in Shoshone land, an Indian girl was picking berries with her friend. Then a cloud of dust appeared, they knew what that meant. For they feared the white men would come after them." The poem concludes, "We still remember Sacagawea today. My heroine forever, forever and always." The book may inspire you to write about one of your heroes or heroines.

A wise, fascinating story with an unlikely great heroine.
I LOVED this book...there's something about Margo & her shyness, her confusion, her melancholy, that would seem to be a turn-off but she winds up being a genuinely moving, intelligent, worthy hero. Unusual theme for a teen novel - a shy girl's quest for acceptance at a snooty private school, being bounced from her obnoxiously slick roommates, her goony but sweet classmates & TWO very unlikely-seeming romantic interests. One being absolutely right, the other absolutely wrong. Margo is absolutely unable to identify and/or fight off her enemies in the beginning of her story, but her growth is both striking, heartening and REAL. Once again, I loved this book! It stayed with me long after I put it down...for the first but not the last time. A teen novel with a most unusual slant.

Lots of Fascinating Fun Facts
Did you know that six of our presidents were named James and four were named William? Or that James Madison was our smallest president at only five feet four inches, Abe Lincoln our tallest at six feet four inches and William Howard Taft weighed more than three hundred pounds? Did you know that most presidents went to college, but nine didn't and they included George Washington and Harry Truman. Presidents have come from all walks of life, had lots of different interests and hobbies and have found their way to the most powerful office in the world, in a variety of ways. Judith St. George has taken the stuffiness out of presidential history and written a very clever, witty book full of funny anecdotes and interesting facts. Her easy to read and enjoyable text is complimented by David Small's expressive and imaginative political cartoon-like illustrations. Together they take the some of the mystery out of the presidency and let future aspirants know that anyone can grow up to be president. This is a terrific book for 8-12 year olds, chock full of information and includes an appendix with dates and important contributions for each of our 41 presidents.

Clever way to interest students
The blend of creative illustrations and informative text, written for the student, makes this a great book to have in any Social Studies class. The author uses dialogue that is simple to understand and, yet, informative. Background history on the Presidency and on the Presidency laws are humorous and straightforward. The illustrator uses caricature style artwork to aid in enhancing the text. This is appropriate, as political cartoons are often done in this style.
Specifics given, about different Presidents, aid in increasing the interest for the reader. Taft having a special tub built for the White House is one such tidbit of trivia that increases interest in learning about the Presidency. The main idea of how to become President is shown in a convoluted way through describing different Presidents' histories and campaigns. This does not diminish the author's ability to bring a complicated issue of becoming and being President from being marvelous

It's easy to see why this is a winner!
I am a student at WV State College and required to read a Caldecott Winner as part of the course requirements. I have read this book to my son who is 7 and he just loves it. The pictures are what make it so great--and that is why it is an award winner. This book would be great for older students, too. I learned many things from this book.

Charming quirky teen novel.
I enjoyed this book; the author has a way of creating interesting, memorable teen characters with more unique characteristics than the average teen novel. Steppie is open to new experiences, learning, & growth - good thing, since it's forced upon her early in the novel. It's fun to experience her embarrassment & mortification...as well as take pleasure in her honest maturity. Charming book!

Dear Dr. Bell...Your Friend, Helen Keller

Retarded
I had to read this book for school, and it was retarded. I do not know why anybody would write this book or why anybody has even bought this book. Do not ever ever ever ever read this book. I would rather watch Barney or Telatubies than read this book and I am 11 years old, yes it really is that bad. There is no point to this book. Do not waste your money on tis retarded book

THE SOUND OF FRIENDSHIP
Dr. Alexander G. Bell, noted for his work with deaf persons (Dr. Bell's mother and wife were both deaf) served as a mentor for young Helen Keller. Both deaf and blind, she stirred an interest in Dr. Bell to further his work with the deaf. Charmed by the bright, vivacious child, Dr. Bell began corresponding with her regularly when she was still a child at the Perkins Institute for the Blind. A long term friendship developed and it was a real heartwarming treat to see how friendship rang out across their different generations.

The Story of a Unique Friendship
Dr. Bell and Helen Keller were two of the most notable people living during the late 1800's and early 1900's. The depth of their friendship, and their encouragement of one another's life work, is a testimony to what two people can accomplish together. The author supplies many details about Dr. Bell and his work among the deaf. A recommended addition to any public or private library.
