How do I live without Anselmo? I want to know...
I don't know how much longer I can make it. The sand in my internship hourglass is quickly running out. I make my copies and open the mail now with an anxious eye on the clock, knowing that only a few precious days separate me from the comfortable world of the internship and the prospect of trying to get a real job. With that blasted internship interview, I had Anselmo. Without him, I don't know where this cruel process will take me. My days have lengthened into long, dark periods of listless wandering. I arrive home from my internship, and stare at the peach hued walls of my ugly eighties themed apartment, and wonder, "where in God's name is Anselmo when you need him?". If it has been a good day, and I have been able to muster enough petty cash to buy a small bottle of Karkov Vodka, I am usually able to drive the terrible thought of facing life after internships without Anselmo in three or six quick, putrid shots. But on normal days, those very numerous, substance

free normal days, I stare at the television, muttering...hoping that his wise but kind face will appear. Hours of syndicated garbage later...I fall asleep, disappointed, dejected, and unwilling to face the morning. Where have you gone Frank Anselmo? Interns turn their lonely eyes to you..whoo, whoo, whoo. God Bless you please Mr. Internship, Frank Anselmo's left and gone away, hey, hey, hey.. So, like General Zod in the sequal to an American classic, I demand to see Superman! I must enter the real world and I demand guidance, and I want it from the man who brought me so much success in the realm of the internship. Nothing else, nothing less, will do. The last time around, I had chapters like "So...You're a Philistine", "Places To Live In NYC if Mummy Won't Pay", and "Dealing with Blasted Lunches: An Intern's Guide to Gastronomy". You remember the magic? I do, and I want more of what Anselmo's cooking. So dust off your keyboard King of Internship Kings, give another Bible, Lord of Entry-Level Lords. We need you. I...need you.

This blasted book....changed my life
Finding an internship can be strenuous, but not with John Anselmi's easy-to-use guide. Anselmi's style is efficient and beautiful. His insight, top-notch. If John Anselmi were here right now, I would like to play a little jazz trumpet for Anselmi. He is the best, the best, the best. In fact, his thoughts are so original, so intriguing, I would like to subscribe to his newsletter. Thank you, undefeated, undisputed, King of internships!

Blagev is bad!
I thought the book was absolutely wonderful, but I must comment on the writing style of the previous review, Denitza Blagev. I think her writing is awful, but her terrible writing (especially the creative stuff), only serves as a contradistinction from the brilliant writing in the internship book.

Maybe Ms. Blagev should try a writing internship. Then her writing might be more pallitable.

Lectures on International Trade

Best thoughts in international trade compiled
This book contains all the very best thinking done in international trade. The book is very densely written, and definitely aimed at those taking graduate level courses (with a good mathematical background). The explanations are very good, especially for graphs (a major shortcoming of most economics texts I think). This book serves as a permanent one-volume reference to any issues regarding international trade.

excellent book to learn from
Although international trade theory/international economics is not the field I would like to specialize in, this is one of the textbooks I would like to buy and keep as a reference. The writing is clear; the authors make an effort to explain almost every step of an equation. Moreover, the graphs are fully explained. I highly recommend this book. I regret that I only used this book for one course, so we were not able to use it more. For graduate level trade theory, I do not think this textbook has a competitor.

the castor oil of international trade theory
This volume synthesizes decades of research in international trade theory. It is comprehensive, and graduate students and working professionals will find it a handy summary of a huge corpus of research. Material is presented in verbal, graphical, and light algebraic form, and the key background references are given at the end of each chapter. These are a little sparse but this is a quibble.

Be forewarned: the book is densely written (Jagdish saves his spare words for his polemics), and generations of graduate students have told me that they hate it. Big deal. This is the castor oil of international trade theory -- open up and drink it down -- it's good for you.

Practical Aural Habilitation: For Speech-Language Pathologists and Educators of Hearing-Impaired Children
Published in Hardcover by Charles C Thomas Pub Ltd (1996)
Author: Pratibha Srinivasan
Amazon base price: $68.95
Average review score:

valuable resource for working with hearing-impaired children
I am a speech-language pathology student. I discovered this book while preparing a presentation on the topic of auditory stimuli in aural rehabilitation. I would highly recommend it to anyone who works with hearing-impaired children, and it is especially good for students and clinicians who work in the schools. It clearly explains how to interpet an audiogram and use it for planning therapy. Best of all, there are many case studies of how the information can be applied to specific children. It includes many therapy tasks and ideas for incorporating auditory-verbal exercises into whole language therapy. Though not apparent from the title, it is directed toward the auditory-verbal school of thought, so would not be appropriate for therapy using manual language approaches. It would also be a good resource for parents of hearing-impaired infants for activities that they could do at home, and for better understanding of their child's impairment. It is well-organized and easy to read. I highly recommend this book.

are big cities more productive?
The important finding of the book is that with increase in size of city, productivity increases to a sizeable extent. The extent of increase in productivity in Indian conditions is comparable with that of U.S.A. This finding is unlike the common perception of the issue that people have!! The contribution of the present book therefore is very important to the policy-makers.

An Engineering Approach to Computer Networking

Serious text for developers of networking devices
I am a senior engineer for network security operations who enjoys learning about networking technologies. I read this book because it compares and contrasts telephone, Internet, and ATM networks. I also have a general interest in learning how networks operate. I concentrate on security, but I realize knowing more about networks in general helps my intrusion detection work. I strongly recommend reading this book if you develop or research networking products. Less focused readers will quickly become overwhelmed, as I was!

Mr. Keshav states "the bulk of this book is written at a level suitable for first-year graduate students in computer science or electrical engineering." He is not kidding! While Mr. Keshav does an excellent job discussing technical material, the extreme level to which he takes explanations demands a very dedicated reader. I was happy enough to learn of the many trade-offs required for sound network device design. Once Mr. Keshav began illuminating exactly how some technologies work (with theorems, equations, and statistics), I began skimming.

My favorite sections included chapters 1 through 4, the "basic" material introducing telephone, Internet, and ATM networks. Chapters 5 (Protocol Layering), 6 (System Design) and 7 (Multiple Access) were also good. Beyond chapter 7 (with some exceptions), I found the material deeper than the interest level I have as a security professional.

Some may wonder about the relevance of a book written in 1996 to current networking practice. I believe the bulk of the text remains useful, since it uses technological examples to frame underlying design approaches. Furthermore, Mr. Keshav provides a way to think about networks by defining crucial terms and concepts in clear terms. These definitions are reinforced by excellent summaries, tables, and glossaries.

"An Engineering Approach" provides an incredible number of answers to the "why" questions of telephone, Internet, and ATM networking. Other books will give mainly the "what" or sometimes "how." "What" is enough for doing daily admin, "how" is enough to improve network performance, and "why" is needed to build better networks. If you need all three levels, give Mr. Keshav's book a try!

Can't Live without it!
Anyone who is involved with networking or telecommunications will find this book invaluable. The author discusses how computer and telephone networks work through well thought out examples and why networks are built the way they are. Not only is this text a great for learning about networks but I use it as a reference again and again. This book is one of the most frequently used books in my library. A Must Have

Great Reference Book
While quite usefull as a general text in networking, I find this book to be one of my best resources as a general reference book for networks. Very lucid, well explained sections on complex topics (scheduling, routing, for ex)are often superior to other books dedicated exclusively to such topics. I especially like the exhaustive chapter-by-chapter references given which enable me to pull additional detailed info from the WEB for a really comprehensive handling of esoteric topics when needed.

This is a helpful tool
This is a great helpful tool for students to use! I was struggling in my stats class and this book helped a great deal. It is set up with many helpful hints and practice problems! Bravo Schaum's

Need a replacement
As per all Schaum's thjis is also excellent. Like many of the others I have, especially the Concrete Book, this one too, worn out. Since it was required for a course that I took for an elective, would you beleive Economic Statistics. An easy A for math majors and Engineers; no real hard core economics covered.

Had this course over thirty years ago; upon recomendation of a friend. Professor did ask one question regarding economics; "which one of these bell curves represents percent of total income". Most wrongly (as I did) the symettric one as opposed to the correctly skewed to the left one.

Nom more economics, then. Pure probability, Stats, and Fun. Since the prof was a sports and gaming fan, as am I, this is my favorite math.

The downside, was the prof was veiwed as biassed against women, because his one-point (out of 500) bonus question was always sports trivia. I actually usually hit them, although I remember, the one test before Memorial day 1970, that if were after I would have known that the Late Tony Hulman alwasys said "Gentlemaen, start your engines".

But I digress. Get this book, agree -- cheap thorough and worth it. My favorite and most practical branch of math; so buy, learn and beat the lotto, cards, horses, and slots.

Practical way to become proficient in problem solving
I have used this book to teach myself statistics and probability theory in a relatively short period of time. The essentials are well laid out and reinforced with plenty of examples and exercises. I would recommend using a Schaum outline authored by Murray Spiegel for becoming proficient in problem solving in that particular area. I got started this way after reading the book, Indiscrete Thoughts by Gian Carlo Rota.

Different, Interesting, Useful
A friend suggested that I take a look at this book. Different than the many books on ecommerce. The last chapter really brings the ideas together.

Wonderful blend of business and technical information
This book is an encyclopedia of metrics that business process owners care about, and a compendium of advice for measuring them. Don't let the title fool you - this book is as applicable to bricks and mortar businesses as it is to e-commerce sites. I can assure you that reading this book will give you insights into the minds of the business process owners for whom you exist to serve, and will impart a good appreciation of business imperatives.

What I like about this book, aside from what I've said above, is the way the authors analyze the technical and business factors. They start in Chapter 2 with a five-layer e-commerce model, then proceed in subsequent chapters to thoroughly dissect the model and how it applies to business types. This book only addresses technology as it relates to business issues. Chapter 3 illustrates this approach wherein the internet platform is placed into the context of cost/benefit issues. As such you'll get the technical details necessary to understand e-commerce infrastructure, but you'll never lose sight of the business imperatives. This is a refreshing approach, in my opinion, and the rest of the book is consistent with this.

Specific chapters that I particularly like include: (Ch 8) Customer Acquisition models, and (Ch 9) Application of Business models. These two chapters capture the essence of e-commerce. Another valuable part of the book is the appendix, which provides in tabular format real companies, their major and minor categories and revenue models. This is excellent research material that has been pre-compiled and will save you untold hours of research and classification as you benchmark your model against competitors and other business models.

Must read
Although I was unfamiliar with the authors and uncertain of the quality of theories/research, I was splendidly suprised and found this book to be a wonderful read. Not only were the theories challenging and stimulating, the author provided fascinating examples of the underlying principles of the book. I think that not only is this book a must read for internet professionals but for the avid business reader as well. The theories can be applied to all disciplines and the concise manner of this book makes it easy for all to understand.

Bad Quality
I bought this in hope that the CD will have the quality that is worth the name of O'Reilly. But I was wrong. The search engine is very poor. Even though it says to search the whole body, give it an 'is', you get no result. Also the master index has a lot of flaws in it. I cannot use the section "Symbol" and "C". All the links miss the book name. All in all, this definitely is a big dissappointment to me.

Inexpensive Knowledge Repository
A long time fan of O'Reilly books, the CD bookshelves are one of the best ideas I've seen from a publisher. If you don't mind reading onscreen these will save you money. If you do pick this up in addition to the hardcopy simply for the search capabilities. A great reference tool from any serious programmer.

i have to buy it.
because the hacker sites don't provide a zip version to download, although i can read online. but for a reference, that's very inconvenient. it is a definitely excellent reference on Perl, although the price is a little high.
