Healthier bodies with home exercises
As a physician I found Ken Sprague's book on weight training to be an excellent, no nonsense primer for adults of all ages to achieve body-shaping and strengthening on bones and muscles by regular exercise using cross-training and light weights. The book is nicely illustrated, rarely using duplicate photos, in the proper use of barbells and dumbbells for home use. Safety is emphasized and though use of gloves is encouraged they are not shown in illustrations but this does make the correct hand positions easier to depict.

A concise chapter on nutrition is well written, emphasizing importance of balanced nutrition and discouraging the use of amino-acid supplements and megadose vitamin intake as expensive and/or potentially harmful. The non-necessity of having to use heavy gym equipment and motorized devices is appealing.

The introductory history of Gold's gym is of especial interest to those acquainted with Venice Beach, CA where Gold's gym began and is ever more popular. Written by an expert, Sprague was original owner-operator of Gold's Gyms. He has given us a useful book of trusted information which includes discussion of reps, sets, and frequency for optimum muscle development. The book is suitable for use by the ever increasing ederly population which has so much to gain as they live longer.

THIS BOOK MADE ME BUFF!

Written from the perspective of an athlete
This is a classic book in the field, rather unique because it discusses strength training from the perspective of an athlete as opposed to a bodybuilder only. Ken Sprague is the owner and operator of the first Gold's Gym, the original strength training center. The book includes pictorials of various exercises and a discussion of lifting strategy. It stresses the importance of weight lifting movements that mirror athletic motions.

A MUST-HAVE Classic for Youth Weight Training!
Ken Sprague owned and operated the original Gold's Gym for a decade. He has a Phi Beta Kappa science degree and credentials to teach physical education and life sciences from kindergarten through high school. He has personally trained and coached athletes of all ages, from beginners to world champions.

This excellent book is designed to help parents, teachers, and coaches who want to know about weight training for kids and teenagers. It is tailored to the physical needs, growth patterns, emotional development, and physiological capacities of young people. Ken and Chris Sprague provide a safe, effective, and easy to follow training program: workouts for the whole body with free weights that can be done at home.

The training guide is fully illistrated. I like that it answers such questions as, Can children use the same equipment as adults? ... and Should a weight training program differ for young women and men?

Terrible
I read this book a little less than a year ago and considered it a bodybuilding bible. It was full of orthodox training techniques that seemed to make sense -- after all, it carried the same misinformation that you hear constantly in the weight room. A little frustrated with my own progress, I lowered my repetitions as More Muscle had told me to, and went back into the weight room, confident that I would make as enormous progress as the author made me think I would.

Little did I know that I would spend months and months working harder than I needed to, overtraining while simultaneously not giving my muscles enough overload. For virtually 8 months I gained less than 5 pounds of mass and made very, very gradual strength gains. This came as a result of my training by the book, More Muscle.

So, some months ago I ventured off and bought myself a new book - Power Factor Training, by John Little and Peter Sisco. Not until I read Power Factor Training did I ever realize how little scientific fact there was in books like More Muscle. The book preaches about things like full range of motion, 4 days on, one day off routines, and using a MIRROR rather than a logbook to ensure success. More Muscle is a book created from 99% myth and almost no scientific evidence.

Using Power Factor Training, I no longer have to train merely by "feel", and have made tremendous gains. It pains me to see that millions of peple read orthodox bodybuilding crap like More Muscle and waste their time, making little gain, as I did.

Thinking about buying this book? Do yourself a favour and skip to Power Factor Training, a book that usese facts rather than heresay, and you'll be a lot better off. Take my word for it.

Great photo demos of weight exercises!
I loved the photos showing how to do the various weight exercises and the different machines. Also the workout charts are useful for busy folks who cant read a two thousand page weight lifting book.
