Cathy Spagnoli's Asian Tales and Tellers is an excellent book. I sincerely enjoyed her book as her tales cover a wide spectrum of Asian cultures with a multitude of themes that any reader be it young or old can relate to. Furthermore, the authenticity of each tale can be measured by the detailed bibliography that follows at the end. Moreover Cathy Spagnoli's tales are so skillfully told that it is easy to pick up the book and imagine yourself in the world created by the tale. What is also useful about this book are the anecdotes, and the information that precedes the tales such as the storyteller's tools and styles. A truly relishable piece of work!

Librarians, teachers, and storytellers will find Cathy Spagnoli's new collection of Asian folktales to be an invaluable resource to use with children. Simple but engaging stories from twenty Asian countries are presented along with supporting information and activities including riddles, chants, rhymes, and crafts. Not only is this collection an excellent introduction to Asian folklore but also a collection that will appeal to younger children. As a children's librarian I highly recommend "A Treasury of Asian stories & Activities for Schools and Libraries as an entertaining and useful addition to any library, classroom, or home.

The illustrations in this book are especially apt being draaawn from the embroidery style associated with the Hmong. The tale is a simple tale of a tiger told she would have nine cubs in one year being tricked by a bird into one cub in nine years. The "exotic" animals appeal to children while the story is humorous without any cultural barriers.

This is an excellent choice for animal stories outside the traditional European culture.

I think this was a very original traditional tale from the Hmong people. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think children of all ages will too.

Cathy Spagnoli has again done an excellent job of adapting a spoken folk tale into a picture book text - a task that is much more difficult than it appears. Nancy Hom's illustrations include the Khemer text. While few will be able to read the Khemer, it is an excellent way to introduce children to the concept of different alphabets. The tale itself is a simple tale of a newlywed heading off to war only to have a tree spirit impersonate the groom to the bride. When the true groom returns, a wise rabbit serves a judge to set the world back in order. As with many of the animal folktales, there is a gentle moral to the story ... far gentler than the Western Aesop tradition.
