Fixing God's Torah: The Accuracy of the Hebrew Bible Text in Jewish Law
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (2001)
Author: B. Barry Levy

Scholarly treatment of a controversial issue
Since the nineteeenth century, the absolute integrity of the text of the Pentateuch as the letter-for -letter accurate revelatory message of the Divine to Moses on Mount Sinai has been an article of faith for Orthodox Judaism. Prof. Levy shows with meticulous scholarship that from early Rabbinic times onwards, through the Middle Ages and even into more modern times many rabbinic scholars acknowledged and discussed the variations in the Masoretic and other texts of the 5 Books ( particularly in the context of the accuracy of the Scrolls used in synagogue). What was commonplace discussion in early times turned into sensation in our own times; what was never at issue turned into heresy, and, conversely, a view that was never espoused turned into an article of faith. The book is a superbly documented window onto the history of Judaism, and on to the history of the transmission of texts, with restrained but pointed relevance to some contemporary causes celebre - eg Bible Codes, whose basic premise this books elegantly demolishes. Should be in every theological and Jewish library!

This book can take you from beginner to expert.
Presumming you know something about SQL and NT. This book combined, with MSSQL's ease of use, provides a powerfull combination of escorting someone with limited Data Base Administration knowledge to a running and functioning data base. Each knowledge step from installation to using the installed PUBS data base is described in precise detail. The authors right on. How to take care of your car so it can take care of you!
I really enjoyed this book and have read it through several times. I still use it for reference. David writes in an upbeat manner and injects humor and personal experiences whenever possible. There are many sidebars covering relavent topics. As someone who treats their car like their child, I am always wondering if I am "doing right" by my car. This book gives a preventative maintenance schedule and explains why it is important.
A lot of the book is devoted to emergency situations, what to do in case of a blow-out, how to drive in bad weather, how to get out of the mud, etc. This is all good stuff to know and it is not taught in the that little book you study with in preparation for your driver's license exam. David also writes about current topics like avoiding car-jacking and pros & cons of different security devices. It also covers wht you should carry in your trunk for an emergency road kit.
This book is for the not-so-mechanically-inclined, it does not tell you how to rebuild your transmission, but it does cover how to find a good mechanic. It does explain how to do all of the things that an amateur would feel confident doing: checking and inspecting fluids, tire care, getting rid of squeaks, etc. It even gives a brief lesson in auto reconditioning.
In my opinion, even if you are a certified mechanic, you could benefit by reading the emergency situation information. If you are an amateur, you can definately learn a lot by reading this book cover to cover.

A selection of poems in celebration mutual love
Deftly edited by David W. Cotter, The Song Of Songs: Studies In Hebrew Narrative & Poetry by Dianne Bergant (Professor of Biblical Studies and Director of the Joint Doctor of Ministry Program, Catholic Theological Union) is an exhaustive and meticulous analysis of the Song of Songs, viewing it as a selection of poems in celebration mutual love. Special attention is paid to the careful matter of translating the poetic verse from Hebrew, and the cultural context of the poetry. The Song Of Songs is strongly recommended as an invaluable, serious, college-level analysis for scholars of Biblical Studies in general, and Hebrew narrative and poetry in particular.

Language of Souls
This book, consisting of the poems of k.t. Frankovich, Ruth Solomon and David Taub, is beautifully presented with illustrations by Freydoon Rassouli.

The poems are positive and hopeful. And they are written in a form that can be easily understood. I enjoyed them immensely.

A Facinating, Riviting Poetry Book
I heard KT and David do a Poetry Reading from their Book Language of Souls, it was done with such love and special meaning,I know that the words and poems chosen,When kt and David recited their works it made you feel as if you were reliving the experinces that they shared in there superb poems. They have such depth in the way they express themselves and beauty in the words. Just wonderful, there are not enough words I can say about these special people. Keep up the Wonderful Work God Bless Janet Russell Host and Producer Beyond The Unexplained

The language of images.
This book is quite a treasure. The artwork of Freydoon Rassouli is evocative and dreamlike adding a marvellous dimension to the language imagery of authors k.t., David and Ruth - an extraordinary trio of poets whose differing styles keep the reading fresh as they wander through topic and theme. I will remember and re-read 'The Precious Bag Lady', 'Winter Walk' (and other seasons) and 'Luminary Appropriations' and many others. I can recommend Language of Souls as a rich and rewarding reading.

complete compendium of sybase administration
This book is just what I looked for: A complete reference of howto's in Sybase ASE administration. It describes the ways to handle sybase admin tasks using the non-graphical interfaces. Especially for the friends of linux who get the ASE 11 for free this is the perfect manual to use ASE easily!

Everything That I've Needed
I already knew Sybase fairly well when I got a copy of this book. So I never felt the need to read the entire thing.

The reason I know it is valuable and the reason I give it 5 stars is this: every time I have a problem or run across something I don't know how to do, I open this book. Then I quickly and easily find the solution. That makes the book good as gold as far as I am concerned.

The most comprehensive valuable Sybase book around
This book is a must have for anyone using or planning to use Sybase SQL Server. I find myself constantly grabbing for this book whenever I have a Sybase question that needs to be answered. My copy has become frayed and tattered with use.

clear and interesting, but some things are left out
This book is interesting for people who want to learn about what goes on under the hood of Windows 2000. The authors' style is clear and easy to understand and there is a good wealth of precious, in depth information.
It would have been even better if more details were included: some system mechanisms are mentioned, but the details are left out (particularly on LPCs). Also, the book is not oriented toward experimenting with the system by means of writing kernel mode code: nearly all of the experiments are based on the usage of tools. I think the book could have had room for something more if a number of pages of data structures listing (returned by Kd commands) were left out, particularly since these listings have very few comments and therefore add very little to what everyone can get from the debugger.

Must have for any Windows Develepor
This book explains windows 2000 internal workings in reasonable breadth and sufficient depth. This book is MUCH better than the 2nd Edition of Inside Windows NT, perhaps because of Mark's contributions.
The only problem with this book is that, inspite of being huge, it is only one volume. I think Windows 2000 is too extensive to fit in one book, and though the book is great for getting at many of the principles, you need to look at the DDK/SDK documentation to get more details, and actually use them in your work. At this level the book provides a great starting point to delve into OS internals, but perhaps someone needs to write a book for each chapter to do justice.

2000 Systems Programming at its best!!!
As a former systems programmer on Burroughs (Unisys) systems, I was always used to knowing how the OS did things. It is a real treat after working on PCs for so long, to finally get a book that makes it interesting to learn the internals again. This book is full of things that will give you an appreciation of any OS, but the way it cracks into the guts of 2000 is great. The experiments in this book make it really easy to learn how 2000 is organized and apply it to existing programming projects. Learning 2000 from the inside via the debugger is just a great way to do it. No offense to David, but Mark's influence is obvious. If you are a fan of his Internals column, you will like this book even better. The fact that he does it without source code is even more amazing. Wait a minute...why hasn't Microsoft paid these guys whatever they want to build the next version of 2000?
If you appreciate a good OS and an even better manual on it...Buy This Book...

Excellent book about how Windows NT works inside
This is one of the books where I have to force myself to stop reading as one interesting a paragraph follows the next. The first few chapters give a general overview of the basic subsystems and how they work together. The information described in these chapters are taken as a basis for the following chapters that each discuss one subsystem.

For a general overview of how a subsystem works the first few pages of a chapter give you the general idea. If you want to know more the chapters will then go deeper.

The book will NOT tell you how to program NT but rather introduce you to the concepts that are working 'under the hood'.

Shortcommings: Sometimes terms are used at the beginning of a chapter that are defined somewhere in the middle of a chapter or in another chapter further into the book. Also the network subsystem is not described at all.

Extensive yet brief
Inside Windows NT second edition provides a very extensive overview to the system's internal architecture and implementation. In other words, this book is more like "how it works" than programming documentation. Programmers who seek information on detailed interface definition would find this book disappointing. However, Inside Windows NT second edition reveals some sort of information that system designers would want to have a reference of.

A must-read for NT systems professionals
David Solomon's long-awaited update to Helen Custer's original survey of the Microsoft Windows NT operating system is an excellent guide to the internals of the operating system for programmers, systems administrators, and other computer professionals. At 500+ pages, it is chock full of great information about NT that is simply unavailable from any other source. Profusely illustrated and full of very good examples. Custer's original "Inside Windows NT" book was always long on self-congratulations (she apparently was the official "historian" of the project), but short on the kinds of detail that makes hackers drool. It was also written to NT version 3, and is now considerably out to date. Solomon's revision is a total rewrite that remedies this situation. The book is current on NT 4.0, and even contains a good chapter on upcoming changes in NT 5.0. This book definitely belongs on any Windows NT programmer's bookshelf. Solomon writes in the introduction that he was given access to NT source code, and he demonstrates how to use the kernel debugger to decipher what is happening inside the operating system. Even so, he manages to keep the presentation lively and informative. He also reports he had access to the NT developers themselves to review what he had written, which guarentees the accuracy of the book. In several areas I found concise explanations of features that other less well-connected authors and experts had written either in a vague or contradictory way. I am very grateful for Solomon's book clearing up the confusion in these areas.

Great breath, fair depth
The 3rd edition is much improved providing great breath of topic coverage. On the downside the coverage of extended stored procedures is one page so this is not a programmers book. It is one of those books that has something to say about everything SQL Server could possibly be employed to do, and that makes it unique. IMHO the publisher should break this book into a 3-4 book series and work on adding depth in future editions. Buy other books for depth at this time such as Soukup's for insights and background, SQL Server Programming for programming and England's book on Performance and Optimization and Tuning if interested. I'm a 25+ year programmer in 15 or so languages (prefering C & C++) and believe SQL is pretty easy to pick up if you are willing to read 5-6 good books. Make this one of them.

excelente for administering and manager SQL 6.5
great book for administering, understanding the SQl 6.5

Great In-depth knowledge no other book touches.
I read the others Inside SQL Server , SQL Server DBA Survial Guide, Inside SQL Server; but this is heads above the rest. The detailed low level analysis of walking data pages, distribution stats, Query showplan breakdown and Query analysis with trace flags, is awesome ! I only hope that the authors do a true upgrade for SQL 7. (Some of the other books are only paying lip service to the new features and changes in SQL 7.) Easily the best Advanced SQL 6.5 book out there.
