A terse, dense book on struggling with symbols
Semiology had its birth with Saussure and the publication of his lecture notes by students in 1916, entitled Course in General Linguistics. Semiology was to be a general science of signs, of which linguistics would be one part. However, over time it has become clear that there exist no complex systems of symbols completely removed from language. Semioticians have recognized, then, that "linguistics is not a part of the general science of signs, but rather it is semiology which is a part of linguistics".

In this clearly written work, Barthes thus undertakes this task of semiolgy, under four main headings borrowed from structural anthropology (Claude Levi-Strauss) and clearly reliant on Saussure:

I. Language and Speech. (Saussure's langue and parole) II. Signified and Signifier. III. Syntagm and System. IV. Denotation and Connotation.

This book is written in a dense and terse style, and dates from 1964. For an introductory text, therefore, I would suggest instead Umberto Eco's "Semiotics and the Philosophy of Language". Yet for those who are set on studying Barthes, a very important figure in this field, then this book can be recommended.

A great outline of semiology
This project was designed as an introductory text for Barthes' students. It assumes almost no prior knowledge of semiology or critical theory, and introduces the vocabulary of semiotics to the general reader. Barthes is one of the few theorists who writes without an extensive bibliography and notes. However, unlike his other books, Elements of Semiology, for ease of use and reference, includes an index and bibliography. Not exactly beach reading, but great for students of literature and cultural studies.

This book should be in every upper elementary and junior highschool library within the red wolf's former range. Smith does anexcellent job of explaining all aspects of saving an endangered species and getting it back into the wild. The book is filled with beautiful photos, and the text is informative and readable. His use of dialog at the beginning of each chapter draws in the reader. A truly wonderful book!

Zach's Lie
I give Zach's Lie 5 stars because it is a very interesting book. If you like mysteries this is the book for you.
One night Jack, Joanne, and his mom are ransacked by three drug smuggling men and were threatened to be killed. Police! The men shouted and left the house. The DEA {Drug Enforcement Agency} came and arrested the family and took them to headquarters and had them move to a different town, change their names, and no more contact with friends, [like no more letters, telephones calls, and e-mail.]
In the new town Elko, Nevada he meets a girl named Catalin and the janitor, Sam. Catalin took Zach up where her grandpa had a sheep farm. That's where the bad guys found him.
Do not put this book down until your done. Find out what happens to Zach when you read Zach's Lie.

Thunder cave
Thunder cave is a very good book to read. the reading level is 4.4 but it is not that bad. the story takes place in Kenya, Africa. the main characters in the books are Jacob,Robert, supeet, and donavan. this book talks about how you can live in Kenya without a grown up.

A great,well-written book by Roland Smith
Thunder Cave is one the best books I have ever read. It's all about elephants, the Masai people, and poachers. When Jake's mom dies, Jake secretly goes to Kenya on a wild adventure to see his father who works in Kenya. On his way, Jake meets Supeet, a Masai boy who's trying to bring back the Masai people and the heavy rains. Jake finally finds his father, and they move to New York.

...
I think Thunder cave is the best book I have ever read. I like all the adventure. In the book, Jake (the main character) finds out that his mom has been injured in a car accident, later Jake's mom (Beth) die's. So he sets out on a trip to Kenya, Africa to find his father that he hasen't seen in a long time. If you like mystery, adventure, and suspence then you will LOVE this book!!!!

Fun book about Sasquatch!
Mrs. Hickock has good reason to be nervous about leaving her son Dylan alone with his father while she heads to Egypt to for five months to complete her doctoral dissertation. Mr. Hickock has always been a little peculiar: he has a habit of spending hours in their garage, the place where he lets all of his "crazy ideas incubate and hatch", obsessing over a particular topic. Whenever Dylan's dad is curious about anything he sits in the garage reading every book written on the subject taking copious notes until his curiosity is satisfied. For the past few months, aside from acting strange after returning from a camping trip on Mount Saint Helens, he has been on good behavior to not give Dylan's mother any reason to cancel her trip. But as soon as the drop his mother off at the airport, Dylan's father sees an article on the front page of the paper that grabs his attention and he quickly becomes obsessed with another subject: cryptids, animals that are not proven to exist.

Dylan is shocked when his father joins an expedition of Bigfoot experts, professional trackers, and other cryptid enthusiasts to look for Sasquatch, the most infamous of all cryptids on Mount Saint Helens. With the help of an eccentric former field biologist, Samuel Johnson, Dylan follows the expedition to make sure that his crazy father stays out of trouble. Suddenly Mount Saint Helens is about to erupt and the men leading the expedition are not as reliable as they once seemed. Dylan realizes that his father may not be crazy and that Sasquatch may actually exist! This is an exciting page-turner with many twists and turns. Fans of adventure novels and anyone interested in the myth of Sasquatch will definitely be pleased!

What A Great Book!
I think that this was a great action filled book. I couldn't put it down. When I first started reading this book I really got into it. What this book is about is the Sasquatch. The Dad in this story goes hunting with some of his bodies at work, when he gets his first look at Sasquatch. After that he becomes interested and fasinated about the creature and wants to learn more. His son is pulled along on this crazy adventure. He son doesn't believe his dad until he gets his own look at the massive creature. This book is an awsome Science Fiction and I suggest it to anyone that likes to sit down and read a good book.

An exciting adventure based on three Northwest legends!
A 5th grade teacher in our school read "Sasquatch" to her class at the beginning of the school year, and suddenly it become the most requested book in our elemementary school library...the only problem was, we didn't have any copies...yet.

Now that we have few copies, it's still one of our most requested books.

Roland Smith has done an excellent job of weaving together three famous Washington State legends, the state where we live, into one extremely exciting adventure, that keeps building up to the very end. Two of those legends are--obviously--the Sasquatch and Mount Saint Helens, but you'll have to read the book to discover the third. To tell you now would spoil 1/3 of your fun in reading this thrilling book.

Whether you consider this title realistic fiction or fantasy will depend entirely on your view of the Sasquatch (or Bigfoot). I prefer to see it as a fantasy, but that doesn't take away from the excitement of this book. This is a "guys" book, that girls will also enjoy reading.

The Captain's Dog a book review by Ben
Roland Smith is the best author ever!! He has written many great books, like Sasquatch, Jaguar, and Thunder Cave which was named an NCSS-CBC Notable Children's Trade Book. The Captain's Dog is about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and in the beginning Captain Lewis buys Seaman the dog and takes Seaman with him on the Expedition. The book is set all around the U.S., on rivers, and in the mountains across the United States to the Pacific. Lewis and Clark encountered many different kinds of animals that they've never seen before. Some were friendly and some were not so friendly, in fact dangerous. One day Seaman was on a ramble when he ran into a pack of wolves. Seaman was stronger than the leader of the pack, but the whole pack could take him down, Seaman ran! After a while two wolves dropped back, but the leader was still in hot pursuit. After a little while more White Feather, the crow that comes into the story numerous times, scares off the wolf.Along their journey Lewis , Clark and Seaman met a lot of Indians from many different tribes. Most of the Indians were friendly, and Lewis & Clark traded with them to get items for their journey. I liked the Captain's Dog because of the action and adventures they had! I also liked that the story was told from Seaman's point of view which could be funny at times.

Great Read from a 38 year old!
I read this book to my niece and nephew (they were 8 and 10 respectively) a couple of years ago and I can't wait to read it to my own kids when they get old enough. Being from South Dakota, I know of a lot of the places this book took us which is important but the book was also filled with a lot of emotion...it had us laughing, crying and cheering! Not too many books do that these days. Rock on, Roland Smith! And just for the record, my niece and nephew and I still talk about this book to this day. Parents, read to your kids!

This was one of my favorite books
The book is about a dog named Seaman who traveles on across America trying to find a North West passage with Louis and Clark. It was set back in the early seventeenth centry. I think this book is very realistic. It had a very interesting ending that really surprised me. It is one of the best books I have ever read. I would recommend this book to dog lovers and fans of historical fiction books. I would recommend ages 9 and up to read this adventure filled book. I liked this book more than all the Harry Potter books combined.

JAGUAR AHHH!!
Jaguar is a very exciting book that will keep you turning pages. It is about a young boy named Jake Lansa. It is a series from the first book, Thunder Cave. Jake's gransfather is a Hopi Indian and his father is a field biologist, Robert, who is called Doc. Doc is helping his best friend, Bill to make a Jaguar reservation. But when the boat mysteriously explodes, it kills Bill and injures Buzz, the pilot for the Jaguar tracking device. Doc decides to create the dream of his best friend with his son and his girlfriend, Flanna (Jake's mother died), along with a strange person named Silver who has a boat ready for them. They reach the reservation spot, and with the help of Raul, an Indian, they track a jaguar mother and her 2 kids. Doc falls ill and a terrorist who knows Silver takes over. It seems that their reservation spot is near a gold mine, and a few like Silver and the captor want to get rich. Flanna killed him and they were safe. If you want the whole story, you should read this great book! You can also read The Last Lobo, which continues from Jaguar.

Jaguar
This book is about a a young boy named Jake. His father is a scientist who wants to make a jauguar preserve in Brazil. Jake has to stay in New York but then his father wants him to come to Brazil over spring break. Together they have to create the preserve. But then they run into trouble (like they're airplane crashing) They travel upriver and experience things that they both had never experienced before. They soon run into robber/kidnnappers and has to deal with them before they finish they're journey through the dangerous Jungle.

Good book to read
In the book Jaguar there is a boy and his dad was a scientist and he studied Jaguars. His dad had to go to Brazil and he had to stay with his grandpa in a retirement home. A few months later he got a letter from his dad saying that he could come down to Brazil to find out what happened in Brazil, you'll have to read the book.

CAPITAL GOOD
This book is aight because you can not really tell what is going to happen unlike other books I have read. I liked how the writer ded not jsut write one paragraph to explain why the main character is doing or why they are doing that. This is a good multi-cultural book because it teaches some history on the Native American tribes that are in this book. Other multi-cultural books I have read do not tell as much about the history of the culture. The book describes the main events very well and the characters reminded me of real life people I know. Some things that kind of bugged me about this book is that the book just kind of stops at the end so I was like that was it. I think they should of have a little more information about the Mexican Wolves it would of been more interesting. I would of liked to know how one of the characters afforded all of the things it seemed impossible to pay all those expenses off without a job. Like I said The Last Lobo just stop and doesn't tell what happened to the charcters.

The last lobo
The last lobo was one of the best books I have ever read. I just finshed it this morning. The thing I liked about it was the ending. And all of the problems he faces. Even though I was too old for this book It was very well done. Check this one out!

A 11 year old reader from Saline, MI
I rated the last lobo as a five because it is a wounderful and intersting story. It is about a kid how travels to arazon to find his grandfather. but he fond more than his grandfather if you want to now more read the book and don't forget to check out the other two books.
