A dessert island? Cool!
To Mr. Ex-navyman: What's a dessert island? Are there parfait trees? Pudding ponds? Candy fish? Where do I get my ticket?

This Ex-navyman would take this book to a dessert island!
Having been at sea and on land during my experiences of the Vietnam war, knowing the importance of survival not only at sea, but also on land is the key factor to staying alive and being rescued. This matter in book form gives good accounts of how make do with what you have and at the same time show all the practical ways from dehydrating and starving to death not to mention going completely insane from pure boredom. Yes rowboats and luxury liners do sink as well as aircraft falling out of the sky. Ones ability to effectively take control of the situation and keep all parties alive through clear thinking and good judgement is the key to Survival not only at sea, but even on a waterless dessert island. All the material collect from naval research is founded on actual experineces of those that had to use there whits and enginuity to survive until rescued. A must for the international traveler

I Been Here Before I Lighted Out For The Territories
This volume of effervescence gives off more sparks than a campfire from "Roughing It". It also provides terrific context for a group of essays by Shelly Fisher Fishkin "Lighting Out for the Territories". For real fun read David Carkeet's modern recreation of Twain "I Been Here Before", a book Twain would have somehow wished to be included in his canon. Don't be surprised if someday Carkeet's book is included as a companion volume to the Oxford Mark Twain.

Lacks in valuable content
I recently purchased this book so I could get a better edge on marketing my online business. After spending a couple of days reading this book and researching some of the information presented I can conclusively say that this book did not teach me anything that I did not already know.

I will also add that some of the most important areas of Internet marketing were not even focused on for more than a single sentence or paragraph; leading me to believe that the gentlemen that wrote this book are not versed in online business, as much as they are with the brick and mortars.

I would strongly recommend not purchasing this book if you want to learn more about Internet marketing. I'm sure there is a good book out there for this, however I have not found it yet.

Regards,

DK

A hand book and guide you've been looking for
Internet Marketing for Dummies Internet Marketing for Dummies is a must read book for any small business person new to online marketing. There's a lot of hype about marketing on the Internet, but the book's authors Frank Catalano and Bud Smith - do not hype your expectations. I knew that Internet Marketing for Dummies was not going to be another "let down" when I noticed that the authors included many of the online marketing resources that I frequent on a daily basis! Catalano and Smith begin their book by explaining that "Internet marketing" is "marketing" but using the Internet - and this is very important to understand. So many businesses want to rush into "online marketing", but don't have any clue about how even to market at all. The fundamentals of marketing, apply online as well as off line. Internet Marketing for Dummies walks the user through a fast over view of the Internet - explaining what AOl is, as compared to full access to the Internet. This chapter is very helpful for the many small businesses that are really not so sure what the Internet is all about. Chapter 2 and 3 of Internet Marketing for Dummies realy lays in to the nitty gritty of marketing, with a consentration in chapter two on developing an "Internet Marketing Plan" I was very impressed that the authors of this book took a whole chapter to also discuss and help the reader decide their domain name. Your business name, may indeed be "Faulkner, Grade and Berkmenstein" - however, you may wan to try out "greatlawyers.com" for a domain name! There's a lot of gems in Internet Marketing for Dummies , such as a nice section on effectively using email as a marketing tool. On page 155, chapter 8, Internet Marketing for Dummies lists "techniques for gathering visitor information" on your Web site. See, Internet marketing is more than "just" Internet marketing, but its a blend of leveraging your own Web site, reaching out to others, adveritising on Web sites, building an email list and etc. Internet Marketing for Dummies is one of those books you just keep as a guide on your desk and refer to daily. After you've launched some successful online marketing campaigns you'll be a pro and can then refine what you've learned in Internet Marketing for Dummies.

Out with the old, In with the new
I was hired by ARCO to review this book in the face of mounting complaints that it was not useful as a review tool any more. I agreed that it, indeed, was not very good (see other review). So, they hired me to rewrite the book from scratch. My book is being released in January 2001: Mastering the Calculus AB and BC Tests, by W. Michael Kelley.

Not only is my book (also published by ARCO/Peterson's) comprehensive, it is also the only funny math AP prep book out there.

How To Score Negative Numbers On An AP Exam
Do not buy this book! I bought this book in hopes of doing well on the AP test. However, when I started actually reading the book, I found out that the book was a complete waste of my money. The book is hard to understand, the explanations are not helpful, and the content of the book does not even focus on the topic outline for the AP Calculus exams. For example, the last section for Calculus BC focuses on differential equations that are not variable-separable -- an obvious indicator that the author of this book does NOT know anything about what is on the AP Calculus BC test! Another example is the inclusion of the hyperbolic functions. Rolle's theorem is stated incorrectly; the book states f(a)=0 and f(b)=0 as a condition, when in reality f(a)=f(b) is all that is needed. And is it proper calculus to write the limit of a quotient = 0/0 or infinity/infinity? I think not! Perhaps the biggest error is that the book defines critical numbers to be when f'(x) = 0, when in fact it should be when f'(x) = 0 or f'(x) DNE! In fact... where's the first derivative test? How could that be overlooked? And where is the antiderivative that yields inverse secant? Oh, it's in the lengthy table of integrals in the back of the book, something that you will never see during the AP test. Where's Euler's Method? How about slope fields? Netwon's method is tucked away in Appendix C, where nobody will find it. If you want this book just for the practice tests-- the practice tests in this book are not like the actual AP tests, and doing them will not help you at all! Follow the cgkm theorem (I'm cgkm)-- don't buy this book!

The best book out there
I definitely disagree with the negative reviews of this book. When I was taking AP Calculus, this review book helped me extremely because it provided many examples of pitfall mistakes that all students make. It gives good excercise questions after every section. It is concise, but very very comprehensive. Furthermore, if you are keeping up with what is going on in your class this is the ONLY book I recommend. Some might feel that some sections are not explained too deeply; however, this is more than made up for by the great example questions that are clearly picked wisely. This book very much helped me in high school for class and the AP exam. It is a wonderful book to have if you are going to stop taking calculus after high school but sometimes want to look back at something for a quick review. A definite plus.

Wasted Time
I am absolutely amazed that the folks at IDG Books let this one make it to the printer and than decided to allow it to be put into our hands, the readers who value their concerted "Dummy" offerings. This book will insult you if you know how to do something as simple as turning on your web browser. If you have never, ever ventured into the world wide web and have been living in a cave for the last 10 years, than read this book. Otherwise don't waste your time!

What's the most amazing thing to me is the fact that the "Dummy" series books are known for having substance that is geared both towards the novice and the more advanced/learned people looking for good reference material. I have thoroughly enjoyed some of their other publications and I can't highly recommend Business Plans for Dummies enough - that book was tremendous. This book, however, will insult you if you are like me, having moderate web based experience and it will leave you regretting the time that you spent to read it, not to mention the money that you spent to buy it. It was definitely an excercise in futility - throwing good money after bad. I will now have to rethink any future purchases of IDG reading material as the singular result of this poor offering by their company. In short, this is the absolute worst reference book that I've ever read.

A great book for the novice entrepreneur!
Do you want to earn extra income from your business? There are plenty of people today who can offer you helpful information on how to market your business online. There are also plenty of fine books available to help you market your business as well. Feel like a real dummy at marketing? Maybe you are one but don't worry. IDG Books has published Marketing Online for Dummies to offer the average person on the street the basic marketing information they need to be successful.

Marketing Online for Dummies offers a broad range of useful information about the online world, domain name selection and use, Website content, and effective Website marketing strategies. Readers should pay particularly close attention to the chapter dealing with domain name selection and use. According to the authors the selection of an effective domain name can be easily overlooked. Because the use of a domain name will have a direct impact upon the marketing success of any company, it is important to come up with the right name for a company's Website in order to successfully market the products and services they have to offer. This book offers an excellent treatment on this very important subject.

Another bright spot about this book is the special Internet directory of companies and individual Websites where readers can obtain important business information related to online commerce and great shareware software programs. There are valuable resources available on the Internet today and you will find many of them listed here.

As are other books in the Dummies series, this one is quite easy to read and understand. This book is ideal for the novice entrepreneur. The information is first-rate. The software included on the accompanying CD will get the reader online. You won't be an online marketing dummy after reading this book but you may be one if you don't read it at all. The choice is yours!

Great book to read BEFORE you start your site.
I am only on page 90, but this book is worth its weight in gold. It helps you to understand the on line demographics to see how much of your marketing budget to put into a site vs. your off line dollars.

A man with unbelieveable character
Frank Smith was truly a man with ideas before his time! He fought and sacrificed to ensure everyone had the same rights that are guaranteed all under our Constitution. This was unheard of in the segregated South in the '50 and '60s. "Mississippi Liberal" is an excellent history of the Mississippi Delta and the environment that shaped the ideas and life of the Congressman from Mississippi--Frank E. Smith. A man who worked hard to make a difference for all races... and he did! A very comprehensive work by Dr. Dennis J. Mitchell--A superb job!
