Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation
Published in Hardcover by W B Saunders (1997)
Authors: Kenneth Lyons Jones, David W. Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation Smith, and Judy Fletcher
Amazon base price: $84.95
Average review score:

Superb Resource
This is the best book about congenital malformations available for general pediatricians. It is highly accessible and fairly easy to use. It really helps one put together a differential diagnosis for children with dysmorphic features. The price makes it a bargain that should be in every general pediatric clinic.

I do have one suggested improvement: This book is perfect for conversion into a searchable CD-ROM so that one could simply key in the list of features and get back a list of possible syndromes ranked by likelihood.

Outstanding, easily assimilated clinical reference
This is a really outstanding clinical reference. It is of particular relevance to genetic counselors, pediatric specialists, dermatologists, and other clinicians who frequently encounter patients with congenital anomalies and uncommon syndromes. Although the clinical photos are in black and white (no color), they are well chosen to illustrate the features of the (many) syndromes discussed. I have seen several texts that cover roughly the same subject matter as Smith's Recognizable Patterns of Human Malformation; however, none are as comprehensive or nearly as easy to use. I expect this text will replace MEDLINE as my initial go-to reference when I need to get info regarding patients with uncommon congenital syndromes. This text would be a bargain at twice the price! I recommend it most highly

Absolutely bewitching!
I wasn't sure what to expect with this anthology, but I found myself enthralled from beginning to end. Nnedi Okorafor's "Crossroads", Seth Lindberg's "Atropos", and James Dorr's "Madness" were special delights.

Stories for all tastes
A great mix of chilling, horrifying, and otherwise entertaining stories.

Very Satisfying!
This is a great compilation of magic, madness, culture and creativity. All of the stories were pretty satisfying, some of them terrifying! There are some writers here that are going to go places. Watch for the authors of the two longest pieces, Nnedi Okorafor (her story is called Crossroads) and James S. Dorr (he wrote a story called Madness).

A great statistical reference for non-experts in stats!
A colleague had this book and we all used it on a regular basis because, as engineers, our job requires us to present everything with data. Therefore, we need to understand the statistics behind the data. This book is very easy to read and understand for those of us that have some statistical background but are not experts. It was a great reference for our group. Now that that colleague has left, we needed to get another copy!!

The Cthulhu Cycle: Thirteen Tentacles of Terror (Call of Cthulhu Fiction)
Published in Paperback by Chaosium (1996)
Authors: H. P. Lovecraft, Donald R. Burleson, Leonard Carpenter, Pierre Comtois, August W. Derleth, Lord Dunsany, Alan Dean Foster, C. J. Henderson, M. R. James, and Steven Paulsen
Amazon base price: $13.95

Attention Lovecraftian Horror Fans
This is the eleventh book in Chaosium's Cthulhu Cycle series. This volume features tales of Lovecraft's most well-known creation, the octopus-headed entity, Cthulhu. Included are the foundational stories (i.e. "The Call Of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft and "The Black Island" by August W. Derleth), some rare reprints (i.e. "Some Notes Concerning A Green Box" by Alan Dean Foster) and some interesting new stories of Cthulhu in the modern world (i.e. "Rude Awakening" by Will Murray). In any collection the stories are of varied quality but I enoyed the majority of the works collected. If you are a reader of Lovecraft's Mythos fiction then this is a must for your library.

Drum Gahu!: A Systematic Method for an African Percussion Piece
Published in Paperback by White Cliffs Media Co (1991)
Authors: David Locke and Larry W. Smith
Amazon base price: $25.95
Average review score:

For both the player and the scholar
Drum Gahu is another marvel produced by the leader of Ewe drumming in this country, David Locke. Locke systematicly takes the reader through the patterns, playing techniques, and descriptions of each instrument; the bell, the rattle, kagan, kidi, sogo, and the master drum. In addition, he provides the reader with execises for the playing of these instruments. The text is easy to read, but the musical notation is a bit small. I highly recommend buying the Drum Gahu tapes that are available. The tapes are of Locke performing most of the musical examples in the book. It also has an excerpt of Gahu being performed in Africa; the real thing! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about Ewe drumming, and to anyone interested in learning to play Gahu.

I thought this book was awesome and inspiring.
When I got this book for Christmas I put it away. Another devotional book, oh well, was my thought. Was I wrong. I started reading it on New Year's Day and have not been the same since. What insights Hannah had, and my faith and love in our Lord has been made stronger because of this devotional. It is more than just another devotional. It is inspiring!

PIC in Practice
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (2002)
Author: David W. Smith
Amazon base price: $24.99
Average review score:

Written With A Clear Objective.
The substance of the book is informative, and is clearly presented for anyone has interested in programming these devices.
All topics in the book are great for learning to develop your own code.I bought most of the recent releases on this subject. Don't hesitate if your struggling with subrountines and flow charts to get your program up and running, buy this book.David has taken the step by step approach, which is blessing for anyone who wants to learn. There are a few clarical errors which you can hammer out if you read each of the chapters carefully. David has taken the time to expand your library with alot of the most popular Pic's used today. The knowledge you will gain from this book will give you the building blocks required to compile fundamental and valuable code for your next application. Most popular chapters for me are Analog to Digital Conversion, Radio Control, 12C5xx Series 8 Bit Devices. No other release I have is more informative on this subject then David's book. Look for it in your local book store.

PIC in practice review
Well done D.W.Smith!, this book is well laid out and easy to understand. Mr Smith has not presumed any prior PIC knowledge from the reader, except a good understanding of electronics. Describing basic PIC functions initially & with plenty of practical applications early on & then going onto describe why it works. There is no heavy technical 'jargon' early on which all of my other 5 PIC books are guilty of. I only wish that this book had been available 2 years ago when I migrated from amateur electronics logic circuits to PIC micros. My first 5 PIC books by other authors have done nothing but made the learning process an upward struggle. Highly recommend this for your starter / average PIC enthusiast. Not for the very experienced. Well done again.

The Midsummer Classic: The Complete History of Baseball's All-Star Game

A Baseball Almanac Source
Baseball Almanac ([website]) has the most extensive collection of All-Star related data on the Internet. This book has even more! Incredible research, great sources, tons of data, and an annex that by itself is worth the price of the book. Four stars instead of five due to a few inconsistencies between the rosters, lineups, & boxscores, but a must have resource for the hardcore baseball fan interested in our Midsummer Classic.

Great reference book, but could have been better
This book presents each All-Star game (1933-2000) with textual background, box score, rosters & starting lineups, complete play-by-play, and a photo or two. The book has great reference value. The text, though, is fairly wooden : useful but gracelessly flat - a real disappointment considering the colorful and often dramatic subject matter. Still, a highly recommended purchase for all baseball fans, not just historians.

The reference for All-Star game information
I collect baseball reference books and this one is right on the shelf closest to my desk by my Total Baseball, my Baseball Encyclopedia and my Baseball Biographical Encylopedia. It contains wonderful leaderboards of all-star information and play-by-play of every all-star game. For instance, the area describing Pete Rose's mad dash home to win the game has the full inning summary: Torre grounds out, Clemente grounds out, Rose singles, Grabarkewitz singles (Rose to 2nd) and Hickman singles (Rose scores). Every inning of every All-Star game has this level of detail. Nowhere else is this information available.

My only complaint is the lack of pictures. While it kept the cost of production down, it does seem to be a feature you would want to have.
