Cycling in Cuba made Easy and Enjoyable
Having never done any cycle touring, speaking very little Spanish and being a middle aged women travelling alone, I thought a few tips and hints and route advice would make my trip a little easier. I found it all and more in "Bicycling Cuba" by Wally and Barbara Smith. Their advice on what to take, where to go, where to stay, and gems to see was unsurpassed.

I had spent three weeks in Cuba previously and had used two guide books. The Smiths' advice, while not replacing a guide book, was the best: succinct, accurate and introduced me to friendly and helpful people. Their three main cycle tours, west, central and eastern Cuba cover the most scenic areas as well as the historic gems of this wonderful country. The route descriptions were accurate, easy to follow and contained good advice about difficulty, water availability, traffic problems and special sites.

The Smiths obviously love Cuba and this comes out in their writing. They include inserts about various social issues, economics and politics -- each fascinating.

I thoroughly recommend "Bicycling Cuba" with no reservations. My only wish is that the Smiths would produce some more books for other countries.

A very useful guide
Bicycling Cuba turned out to be invaluable during our three-week trip to the western part of Cuba. The authors really know what they are writing about. Some of the most interesting and rewarding routes suggested in the book were not on the best maps available. The authors way of describing the routes kilometer by kilometer was of great help because very often roads were unmarked. At the intersections we had no problems in choosing the right road. The book also contains a lot of useful information, for example, on accomodation.

We warmly recommend Bicycling Cuba for independent cyclists planning a trip to Cuba.

Don't Leave Home Without Bicycling Cuba
We loved this book, comparing this book to other bicycling books we've used, this is by far the best, along with Cuba being one of the best places to cycle tour. Unless you want to spend an enormous amount of money on a stifling guided tour, pack light, buy this book, go and enjoy Cuba. This book has everything you need and is a great read on Cuba in addition to the touring information.

I loved this book!
The Bud Wilson Dream Book was one of those novels you can't put down! The characters were lively and all-too human; their flaws were familiar as well as being engaging. I particularly loved the way that each character grew and matured through the story, coming to crises, revelations, changes, and then subsequent challenges in a realistic way. I already bought all the copies at my local bookstore and I hope this book stays in print for ages! It was the mainstay of my shopping list for Christmas!

A great read.
The Bud Wilson Dream Book is a must read for anyone who has, and almost everyone has, watched the network night time TV talk show host (whether Jack, Johnny, Dave or Jay) and wondered....

An engaging "could happen" tale compellingly woven from the threads of the modern American "stay up late" television viewing experience.

I stayed up late 'cause I couldn't put it down. A great read. A must read!

a good and very insightful study with vivid, fun characters.
There have been additional revews of this book in Maine, the Maine Times, etc. There is praise from all the reviewers for the good prose style and the sheer fun of the plot. Although the central figures are mature women, there is the ever outrageous Bud Wilson, the host of the most popular nighttime television show. An enjoyable encounter between the host and the central figure, a mature woman recently widowed who becomes independent and spunky. There are many suprises and personalities that will stay with the reader long after the book ends.

Toga Tales
I first saw the author perform one of these stories at a festival, then I bought the book. I have truly enjoyed these stories, even though I am no longer a child, because I can see the original myth in between the puns and Texas twang. Adults, I think, would get a good laugh from these stories because these are the stories that they already know but transported to the twentieth century.

I Looooooooooove IT!
I got "hooked" on Barbara McBride-Smith's brilliant style of writing and storytelling when I met her the summer of 1998. She was leading a storytelling workshop at East TN State University. The study of Greek Mythology was never appealing to me until I met Barbara. I am a 6th grade Social Studies teacher, and when I introduce Barbara's work to my students, they fall in love with her. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE!

Hilarious Twist on Mythology!!
This book places humor in stories where humor is not usually found. Told in the Texan style, some passages just make you want to burst out laughing. It helps to have a general knowledge of Greek Mythology before reading, just so you can get the references and jokes. Great read, great laugh!!

A Very Good Book
This is the first Barbara Dawson Smith book that I have read and I will definitly read more. The tranformation of Adam from arrogant noble to compassionate human being is wonderful. Mary is also transform to a passionate young lady. I highly recommend this book

Suspenseful romance..
Never A Lady is a different story. I loved the mind communication between the twins. The mystery and suspense kept me up half the night even though I was sure I knew the guilty party. I tried not to lose patience with the very stuborn duke and what he put Mary through. This is the first book I have read by Barbara Dawson Smith and I can recommend it highly. I found and bought 7 of her books at a local used book shop and won't stop until I have all she has written.

Another great one by Smith!
I don't know why Barbara Dawson Smith is not more popular, because her novels are topnotch, and Never a Lady is one of her very best. The Duke of St. Chaldon and preacher's daughter Mary Sheppard come together via their families; his brother appears to have been wounded by her sister Josephine (his mistress), whom Mary has come to aid after having a vision of her twin's distress. What makes this story intriguing and unusual is the lovers' characters: he not your typical aristocratic rake (though that's precisely what she assumes he is), but rather a man of pride, dignity, and responsibility, which makes their coming together all the more interesting, as she in turn represents everything his upbringing disdains: low birth and a disdain for the aristocracy and its values. She is refreshing first of all, in her plain name, which reflects her ugly duckling evolution in the face of the duke's haughty expectations. Secondly, she is an innocent without being prissy or overawed at her social superiors (as many heroines tend to be). These clashing perspectives are undermined by their chemistry and grudging admiration for values each holds at odds with their respective upbringings. I like the angle of the brother and sister and the added complications of the lovers becoming potential relatives whether she decides to become his mistress or wife. I also enjoyed the proposal scenes and the erotic scenes, particularly the last one in the carriage ride. The dialogue was captivating and lively, showing their wits and mutual attraction, and sweeping the reader along swiftly through to the end. I was loath to put this one down. I also highly recommend My Secret Affair, which again has some unusual lovers, especially the virginal lord, whose inexperience and reluctant passion is a fascinating read.

An Eclectic Approach
This book bridges eastern and western perspectives on the body to formulate a movement approach to performance that could be the basis for a Stanislavski based acting class or a performance class that is some combination of actors, dancers and performance artists. The exercises are concise, clear and guide the reader through increasinly levels of self-awareness and application of this knowledge to performance.

Feel, Fuse and Follow is Great Technique
This book is great. The concept of feel, fuse and follow integrated me with my body in ways I never thought possible.

Innovative approach
This book was a revelation to me in integrating my physical life with my imagination. The easy to follow explorations guided me from an understanding of my body to new ways of moving and working with a script. I found its focus on breathing and imagery expanded my ability to create a character.

COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!!
I have read quite a few of Ms Smith's books. Like the others she has created a great story, strong characters and the best mystery that kept my interest to the very end. It sounded so intriguing I even put off reading "Too Wicked To Love" which I will start now. This book is a definite keeper and highly recommended reading.

I haven't read a romance novel that I could immerse into!
I first spotted this book in high school when I worked at the county library. I was take aback by the brash, handsome man with a sculpted torso and arms making love to this beautiful, milky fair-skinned woman with long, raven hair. I had to read this book! I loved it! Her description of characters and the style of writing. Now that I own the book, I can read it as many times as I want. Ms. Smith's style of writing is erotic, intriguing, and romantic.

A Wonderful Romance!
Elizabeth Hastings seethed with fury. Lord Nicholas Ware had the effrontery to call her wanton...then try to seduce her himself! No man, no matter how handsome and powerful, should dare such an outrage. Yet no man had ever touched her as profoundly as did he. Nicholas struggled to maintain control. His title and position put him far above Elizabeth, the maverick American beauty who spurned convention and defied his authority. But he clung to the delicious, forbidden rapture of her kiss and, claiming her as his own, he vowed to unlock the secret of her mysterious heritage...and save her from the elusive evil that threatened her life.

AYE-KOO, Ms. Smith
Although I have yet to purchase this book, from what I have read on the web site, it is sure to be a bestseller! It contains so much information for all types of planning/festivities/celebrations. I wish I had this book 18 months ago when I was planning my Jumpin' the Broom celebration for August 99. Ms. Smith is a very beautiful, classy black woman. She has much grace and style about her. I have seen her show and I just love it. She dosen't leave any stone unturned. Watch out ESSENCE!

B. Smith is wonderful. This is a great book!
I just love B. Smith. She does everything with such style. This cookbook is full of great recipes and wonderful information. I watch her TV show and her personality is so warm and positive. This comes through in this book and in her new magazine B. SMITH STYLE which I just bought also.

Conventions clearly and concisely explained
1999 Intermediate/Novice Bridge Book of the Year. Each convention is clearly and concisely explained and how it fits into a standard bidding system. Learn how and when to use each and know what your opponents are doing.

Bridge Intermediates' Bible
This is an excellent book for all bridge players, except perhaps for the complete novice. I own about 25 bridge books, and this is the one that I find myself going back to over and over. It's clear, up-to-date, easy to follow, and has just the right level of detail. The examples are very helpful. It covers Jacoby, weak 2 bids, takeout and negative doubles, as well as more sophisticated stuff.

Great overview
I have read a number of books on bidding, and had read about many of the conventions in the book before, but never really felt I could use them. This book does a GREAT job of explaining some of the most important conventions in simple terms.

--Buy the second edition!

Already printed in 10 languages and two editions since its debut in January of 1995, this book is essential reading for anyone feeling stuck in a job, a club, an organization, a church or any systematized group. (It's also a valuable guide for people who prefer the security of being stuck and feel pommeled by the wild beating of feathers around them.)

But, get the second edition, so you can take advantage of the 15 pages of identifiers, tools and processes that will take you from figuring out where you are to figuring out how to get where you want to go.

If you ARE a corporation or lodge or church or school, read the SECOND EDITION only if you're willing to be "dislodged" as appropriate!

Diversity Without Defensiveness
I finally got around to reading this bestseller and now understand why it's sold so many copies. The beauty of this little book is that it gets at important diversity issues that are often emotionally "loaded" for people, but without making people defensive. I find that many people have set up psychological fences around their attitudes toward race, gender and ethnicity. They've been admonished often enough on these topics that they find it hard to listen anymore. By presenting a charming fable about a peacock and penguins, Hately and Schmidt avoid those fences and get directly and powerfully at the essence of the experience of being different--and about the ways that people respond to differences. This second edition contains the 111-page fable from the first edition, plus 15 additional pages of guidance and resources on how to deal with differences. Even with the additional material, it is a very quick read. Reading carefully, it only took me about 45 minutes to read the fable, and another 10 or 15 minutes to get through the new material. This book would be a perfect pre-work assignment for a workshop on diversity.

Accurately depicts the perspectives of the 'diverse'.
I couldn't believe such a complex issue was presented in such a simple manner. I think it should be required reading for all of Corporate America as diversity goes way beyond black and white. How about women, Christians, non-Christians, degreed, non-degreed, conservatives, liberals, moderates, etc? The list is endless. Excellent reading!

A must have -
It is a great book for grabbing the essentials! I always have it handy and posty noted my favorites.

Lifesaver
This book enabled me to become effective as a middle school substitute teacher. The activities alone saved me; the advice made me effective. It is a must for any substitute teacher.

NO OTHER BOOK COMES CLOSE!!!!
I have helped do some substituting in the local schools since 1998 and no other book is as comprehensive as this one for training substitutes. I've been to two different workshops on how to substitute, and each one highly recommended this book over ALL OTHERS!!

What it contains:
--How to be prepared for each day
--What to bring in your "bag of tricks" (every sub should have one to survive).
--How to act professional
--Classroom management (keeping it under control)
--Emergency procedures
--First Aid
--Legal Aspects
--Disabilities and Special Ed
--Giften and Talented
--Multiculturalism
--Brainstorming
--KWL
--Questions for Higher level Thinking
--Using Audoi-Visual materials Effectively
--FILL-IN ACTIVITIES--for when you need to fill in some spare time!
--Also independent activities for those who finish their assignments early.

You get the idea--this book HAS IT ALL.
