Paul Mather is a character that any baseball fan can relate to. Paul has a passion for pitching that is so strong, not even a incurable blood disease can stop him from getting on the mound. This is not only a story about baseball, but a story about life. I am an elementary eduacation student, and I hope to use this book in my classroom. The way Alfred Slote develops Paul's character through the story is amazing. As I read I felt like I was going through everything with Paul. If you have ever enjoyed books by Matt Christopher this is definetely a book for you to read. I would recommend this book to anyone age 9 and up.

This is a heartwarming tale of a young boy with leukemia and a zest for baseball. The theme of going after your goals, regardless of the obstacles, is personified in the main character of Paul Mather. Though set in the 1970's, this story transcends time to today. Many children are still fighting Leukemia, as well as many other illnesses.
Children will connect with Paul forging his parents name on the permission slip for baseball. What child has not forged a signature, or thought about it, and then was caught? This experience by Paul is universal.
Childhood love of activity, also gives universal appeal, through Paul's love of baseball. Many young boys, and some girls, can name their favorite player's statistics. Paul, the main character, is the same. This book is a wonderful story to share. I would use this in a middle school English classroom.

This is my first time reading this book. Hang Tough Paul Mather is a book about a boy named Paul Mather who loves baseball but he has a disease that causes his parents not to let him play. Unless his doctor say it's OK, he can't play. But he plays anyway without doctor's permission. I would recommend it to any one(except a baby). It's a Great book.

The Jameson family is on their way back to Earth from a vacation on M Colony when they run out of fuel. They make an emergency landing on what they think is a desolate planet. But then a horrid sound starts coming out of their robot, Danny. He jumps out of the spaceship to save them, only to be taken below ground by a group of rocks. Naturally, this confuses his parents and brother Jack. What's going on? When Jack follows him below ground, he is shocked to discover what this planet's secret is.

I remembered these books fondly from childhood, and was thrilled to discover they hold the same interest for me now. The sci-fi storyline still holds up today, over 20 years after it was first written, and is interesting enough to keep kids reading. The characters are well crafted, and it's easy to care for Danny, Jack, and even Anne Two. Plus the story provides some interesting things to think about worthy of the best of Star Trek that I had completely forgotten were in this book.

This fun kid's book is well worth the effort to track down. Hopefully, someone will decide to republish it soon so another generation of kids can enjoy it.

C.O.L.A.R. is a magnificent book! I wasn't really into reading science fiction books, but when I read C.O.L.A.R. by Alfred Slote, I just had to read his other books.

So, to all of you out there who doesn't like reading science fiction books, read C.O.L.A.R. Once you start reading it, you wouldn't be able to put it down.

I read this book 16 years ago and remember every part of it. It was huge in third grade. Everyone wanted to read it and there was a long waiting list at the school library just to check it out.

...because I think this was probably my favorite of Alfred Slote's books (all of which I loved when I was a kid). Eleven-year-old Jake loves baseball, shares an apartment with his occupied uncle, and often has to fend for himself when meeting his basic needs. One predicament he faces involves his rag-tag baseball team which can't play unless they have a legitimate coach, and no one will coach them. It's a good story of how Jake struggles to understand the world he lives in and how the adults in his life learn to act responsibly.

I knew we had a great book on our hands when my son called me into his room and begged me to read the last two pages of this book because they "brought tears to his eyes." I knew then that Finding Buck McHenry was the book that had turned by son from a person who reads,into a person who enters the heart of a book and is transformed by it. Hurrah! Not only does this book have a compelling story, but it teaches a good deal about the old Negro Leagues and the heroes of those long forgotten times. This touching story inspires all who read it

Imagine that you were on a baseball team with no coach and the worst team then you'll love Finding Buck McHenry by Alfred Slote.
Jason has a decision to make is worrying about baseball cards or about Little League. Jason is a normal character not looking for much but a coach for his Little League team. About a couple of later he finds a coach named Buck McHenry and a sponsor and a couple of good key players. Now there team is unstoppable. A hit here and there puts the team in the championship. In the championship Jason needs on more hit to drive in the runner at third for the winning run but dose he get it you will have to read it to find out what happens to Jason and the miracle team of Little League.
This book is a fictional book and an excellent choice to read for a book. So if you like baseball and some adventure (when finding coach and championship) then pick up a copy of Finding Buck McHenry by Alfred Slote.

I can feel it in my bones, this old Negro League book touched me like a jagged bolt of lightning! This heart- wrenching novel is a dramatic masterpiece. It made me feel good because I can really relate to Buck. I know that when I was being chased down the street by someone who thought I was Mickey Mantle, I was just as upset as Buck. In fact, it brought me to tears because Buck was not a real person and I could not talk to him about our similarities. The closest I could get to Buck McHenry was talking to the picture of him on this extraordinary novel. Watching the movie, starring Ossie Davis as Buck, is the highlight of every day. I watch it religously at 12:24pm and 7:02pm, and sometimes at 3:46am when I've got Buck on the mind. He is truly the biggest inspiration in my life. Jason (hottie) Ross believes the school janitor is an old negro league player with a scar like a jagged bolt of lighting, from a scrape with the law, on his leg. I could feel it in my bones that Jason would find the scar shaped like a jagged bolt of lightning on the old Negro Leauge player. Jason, Kim and Aaron alone make up the team "Sluggers", coached by who is thought to ba an Old Negro League player. However, we will not ruin the ending of this story, like Bridget (you know who you are) did for me. Thanks a lot! :( One thing I can tell you about the end of the movie is there is an exciting cheer from a crowd screaming: BUCK! MACK! BUCK! MACK! This gets my heart racing, causing me to take my medication, every time. There are also humorous supporting characters such as the baseball card shop man who says: "Since when did I become an adult! " This line gets me reaching for my medication every time! I am so crazy about this movie! In fact, all my clothes have the 4 which the newscasters wear embroidered onto them! I recently visited the town in which they filmed this movie and took the sign welcoming me to the city. It is now hanging above my bed where I can view it every night. I would recommend this book and the movie to anyone because it is wonderful, inspirational and a joy to read or watch again and again and again. It has made me believe in myself, that yes, I can be just like Buck! Buck McHenry is my hero, and the hero of anyone who will take the time to read this book.

The book The Trading Game by Alfred Sloate is a good book in my opinion. The Genre of this book is General Fiction. This book is mainly about an eleven year-old boy, Andy, who's grandfather comes to town for some medical testing. With him he brings Andy's dad's old baseball cards from when Andy's dad was Andy's age. His dad had many baseball cards and he has some worth thousands of dollars. Andy will do anything to get his grandfather's card because his grandfather was in the major leagues and Andy looks up to him. Even if that means trading one of hia cards worth thousands, Then his grandfather decides to go to one of Andy's baseball practices and give them tips and just help out, Andy is very excited but one thing changes everything that Andy was warned about and. I think this book is very good and I would recommend this book anyone who likes fiction sports books.

This book, which I have read 3 times, is a very enjoyable one. It really teaches a lesson about friendship and family.

This book was very good. The reason I choose to read this wasbecause I read another book by Alfred Slote called "Finding BuckMcHenry" (which I highly recommend). This is about a 10 year old boy who is very clumsy but loves to play baseball. That is make believe baseball! It is a very good book and has a cute and happy ending I recommend it to ANYBODY!

The book I read was, My Robot Buddy by Alfred Slote. It takes place in Jacks home. Jack wanted a robot for his birthday. He got one and they almost got robot napped. Read this book to find out if they got saved or not. I disliked the story because it didn't catch my interest

All Jack wants for his birthday is a robot. When his parents give in, he's thrilled. Feeling only a little guilty, he orders exactly what he wants in a friend in Danny One. But what will happen when trouble follows them home?

This is a simple, straight forward book. In fact, it's a little two simple. The book is more the pilot for a series then a story all its own since it sets up the characters for future books. Still, it's a fun, fast read that kids will enjoy. I know I sure did.

Originally written in 1975, there were a few things about this future world that made me laugh, especially the conflict over getting a mobile phone because of how expensive they are.

I spent about a year obsessed with these characters growing up. I even took every opportunity I could to walk stiff in the knees myself. Rereading this book, I easily found the fun again. It's a shame the others aren't still in print so everyone can enjoy the adventures of Jack and Danny One.

The book that I read was My Robot Buddy by Alfred Slote. It takes place in Jack's home. Jack wanted a robot for his birthday. So his parents took him to the robot factory to pick one out. When Jack and Danny got home they were playing outside and then a robot napper came and almost robot napped Jack by mistake. Read more to find out if Jack got saved or not!

The book was a good book,but the Alfed Slote could of got in more detale with the writing of the book. The midile of the book the story got more and more interasting until the last chaper when they made the championship. The book did not till if the team won the campuonship or lost it. that was the worst part of the book, the rest was good so I give this book 3 stars.
