A very easy and pleasant read
I like this book because it is very "user-friendly." Anyone familiar with Course theory will know that the Course can often be very "heady." The Course is not an easy thought system to grasp, even for those of us who have been studying it for years (I'm in my fifth year of study, now). The story behind A COURSE IN MIRACLES, how it was "scribed" and published, may be as startling as the Course theory itself (the Course is founded on the teaching that the world is an illusion made by the ego as an attack on God).

And that's why I love this book: it breaks down the story of A COURSE IN MIRACLES into a very understandable and simple history. The other book about the story behind the Course is ABSENCE FROM FELICITY by Kenneth Wapnick, and it is a wonderful book. But it is also very challenging and raises many spiritual, psychological, and theological themes in its retelling, so it is therefore a bit of "work" to get through. It, like all of Mr. Wapnick's book, is challenging. This book, JOURNEY WITHOUT DISTANCE, is purely linear and non-technical in its retelling. And is therefore not as "intimidating" as some of the other books on this fascinating subject.

For those who do not know, the title of this book is taken from the passage in A COURSE IN MIRACLES that refers to the journey to God as being, "a journey without distance to a goal that has never change." (Text of A COURSE IN MIRACLES, Ch. 8, paragraph 9, sentence 7)

The background story of The Course
I had heard vague information about "A Course in Miracles" some 18 years ago. I was curious but never really followed up on it. Then, I came across this book a few years ago and it is an amazing miraculous story. The odd thing is that Dr. Helen Schucman experienced a life long struggle with faith in God and never truly believed in what she had received from this inner voice. Yet The Course has changed countless lives. If you are at all curious about The Course, I suggest you read this book before starting any study. It is not only inspiring but it gives so much credibility to the whole thing.

For those who use the Course, this tells the story.
Having used A Course in Miracles for close to two years, I was glad to find a book which detailed the story of how it was written. If you find the Course any where near as life changing as I have, you wonder how it came about. This book, by one close to the people who actually wrote it down, takes the process out of the realm of fantasy and puts real flesh and blood into the mix. It also makes the Course even more credible. I highly recommend this as a companion to A Course in Miracles.

Fun word-play
This book is good for kids who are starting to learn about puns and fun with words. The story involves imaginary creatures such as "Kangarshoes" (kangaroos that like to steal people's shoes).

I read it with my daughter, who is nine, and she had a blast trying to predict what the animals would be -- we even started making up some of our own imaginary animals afterwards.

Fun for the Young
In the tradition of "Where the Wild Things Are". this imaginative journey draws 4-7 year olds into its own unique "interactive" story right from the start when Albie meets the first of the many animals he tries to identify. The humor is contagious, and the parent who reads the story will get as much fun out of Albie's trip as the child who is read to. And not just once. After the child has heard the story more than once, and as he/she gets to be able to identify the animals, his/her excitement and enthusiasm grows. What's more, if the child has a computer available at home, he/she can earn his/her own Lifetime Membership in the Jumble Jungle. A real winner for the 4-7 year old age group.

Who's In A Family
It's great to have another book for kids on this very under-represented subject in literature. I do read this book to my kids but change some of the wording as I go.

This book is written nicely for a parent with biological kids who now has a same-sex spouse. For those of us who built our families WITH our same-sex spouse, this book can confuse our kids. The author never refers to "my two fathers" or "my two mothers"...it's always "dad and his PARTNER." That just doesn't apply for my family but we're so used to substituting words in books that the inconvenience is minimal...until my kids can read themselves!

Wonderful Book On Families For Pre-Schoolers
This colorful story is one of the best picture books that I have seen for portraying families in all their diversity. A very bright and inclusive look at who makes up a family in America today

Great for Non-traditional Families
We searched for months for a book for our son that showed ALL types of families. This one hit the mark. While the illustrations may not be museum quality, the message is clear and understated. We have used this in our Sunday School class and based a Sunday service on the idea that "Families Valued" are not all plain vanilla. An excellent book to validate YOUR family's configuration.
