Extremely valuable resource. Gave me courage to go solo.
Provides all the information needed for brief or extended solo trips in Glacier Bay National Park. Includes excellent summaries of a dozen multi-day trips including trip highlights, photos, distances, ratings of difficulty, likely hazards, hints for locating campsites and maps suitable for scoping your trip. Also includes additional resources you may need in the appendix along with phone numbers. The book gave me the courage and information I needed for my first long, solo trip in a wilderness area. An excellent addition to my library.

Skillman's _Moving to the Country_
Having just checked this book from the library... Perhaps no more a gamble than buying country property, which is lessened by this informative, practical, ecology-friendly, non-preachy, how-to book about the process of moving to the country. I imagine there are places in Hopland, CA that try to sell you this information for quite a bit more. Skillman is straight forward as he describes everything about the process from what to expect from country economies, societies, real estate brokers, financing, etc. He provides extremely helpful advice on how and if to build septic tanks, angle of sun and slope, how to build overhangs and face your home to maximize sun in winter and minimize in summer, getting electricy and water, etc. He gives well-founded cautions on pitfalls of moving to the country. I felt like I was in dialogue with a caring uncle who was expert via experience on the subject. I could almost see Skillman measuring the water pressure or driving up gravelled roads to see where easements lay. One small satisfying book, Skillman covers everything I had to read several books to find out.

Fun read of a cross-country cycle journey
Pedaling Across America is a fun read for anybody just getting into cycling or contemplating going on an extended bicycle journey.

Three ~50 year olds embark on a bike trip stretching from the Oregon Coast to Virginia Beach. They battle headwinds, traffic, and intense time pressure to complete the trip before one of the riders has to make it back to his job. Amazingly, they complete the entire journey in under two months averaging over seventy miles a day.

The writing itself is of average quality, but it's a quick read and pretty inspiring given the age of the riders. Definitely makes you want to hit the road! Appendix includes equipment list, budget and mileage log.
