Best law textbook on property you can get!
If you are looking for a property text, you cannot do better than this book. It is not only the best property textbook published right now, it is one of the finest legal textbooks I have had to read.

The writing is clear and comprehensible, and the cases are well chosen: provocative while remaining good examples of Black Letter Law.

My property class was the only section using Singer's book, and we are the only section that actually enjoyed the area of property law. This was not a coincidence.

You don't need a professor to teach you property law ...
... all you need is this textbook! Logically organized, comprehensive and explains complex concepts in a down-to-earth, easy-to-understand manner. The emphasis on the policy behind the rules is also extremely helpful. You won't need to buy a commercial outline with this book.

This is the best casebook I have ever read.
The true greatness of this casebook is that it renders hornbooks and other guides superfluous. It is a truly great casebook in an area of the law I thought would bore me to death. It is so good it makes some of those New Jersey cases almost palatable.

Ethical, Sociological and Religious Look at Legal Deficits
"We can do good and do well at the same time." This book connects together many different perspectives and traditions to assert that now is the time to bring this concept into being through the laws in the United States. Of particular importance are laws governing the duties of business leaders in public companies, the rights of the poor and downtrodden to have an opportunity to develop themselves and live healthy lives, and putting human potential ahead of the treatment of objects. Clearly, this line of thinking requires us to see more interconnectedness among all people and from this time into fuure times.

Many young people are attracted to the law as a way to achieve a more just world. Disillusionment sometimes sets in as students begin to appreciate that the law lags behind the development of community ideals. In this interesting volume, Harvard Law School professor Joseph William Singer uses a variety of references to make the case for amending the legal property rights in order to serve all better in the democratic community. Using sources as differing as the efforts to protect workers by the CEO of Malden Mills, the hit musical Rent, Jewish, Christian and Islamic sacred texts, and studies of the effects of new welfare legislation, Professor Singer argues persuasively for releasing many citizens from "duties" in the law that only serve to create harm in practice.

There is a comforting view of the potential to be humane in this book that will make any reader glad to think about the potential to be a noble person in serving all. Those who do not know about the legendary hospitality of Abraham will enjoy the part of the book that explains the impetus to serve others that is recounted in the Torah (and the Old Testament). The book's title refers to the Jewish law that fields should be cultivated to the edges, and that the gleanings from those edges be left for the poor (along with any grain that falls to the ground and any sheaves that are left behind). From this observance evolves the familiar and broader moral perspective that those who have, also have the need to share and assist others. We are all guardians for all.

At a time when individualism and materialism are strong, and community is becoming weaker, it is all the more important to consider the roots of what methods have always served the needs of humanity well. These analogies and our subjective reaction to them can help us understand where we need to rebalance our focus. If we can extend our vision to think about all the ramifications of our actions, we will take more meaningful actions that will bring us greater spiritual and material comfort. Done properly, the outcome will also be more prosperity for all, including those who give.

In what you do every day, how could what your organization does be changed to benefit more people and more kinds of people in more ways?

May you also find wonderful ways to expand health, happiness, peace, and prosperity for all!

Joe SInger has written a wonderful book
Joe Singer has written a wonderful book. In contrapuntal style, he addresses many of the contradictions of the "prosperity" of modern capitalism. This gives the book an even handed feel which makes the most disagreeable truths easier to confront. He illumines the gaps between the law and human values in the context of corporate dynamics. The title delightfully prepares the reader for an excursion into the history and the development of religious acommodation to the inequality of men. Again and again, this book answers questions that have been at the edge of one's consciousness - why is corporate conduct apt to be threatening to human welfare? Why are people like Aaron Fuerstein so rare ? Where is the failure ? What should we be doing about it? Above all else, this is a fair book. Its seemingly simplicity makes the reader appreciate its jewel like qualities.

A thoughtful and insightful look at the value of values
This deceptively simple and accessible book brings together complex arguments to a conclusion that unites the heart, mind, and spirit -- ownership has obligations as well as rights, and acting with a sense of mercy and fairness is not only ethical and right, but economically beneficial as well. Singer compellingly tells the story of Malden Mills, whose CEO kept the employees on the payroll after the factory burned down -- because it was the right thing to do. Tying together sources from the Old Testament to the Broadway show, "Rent," Singer makes an important contribution to our notions of property and our own conduct. The title, a reference to the Biblical injunction to leave the wheat from the edges of the field for the poor to glean, also reminds us of field theory in physics, the interconnectedness of everything, magnificently described in this fine and important book.

Haydn
This book is great for research on Haydn, or for Classical music lovers who want to know more about their favorite composer. Besides giving a lot of information on Haydn and his life (which, by the way is very interesting), this book also has many pieces that were composed by Haydn, so you not only get information, but music, too. This book is also filled with many colorful pictures, which makes learning about Haydn that much more fun. If you want to learn about Haydn, this is a great book to use.

Singer writes the ultimate story, a must read for all.
To those who might have dismissed Isaac B. Singer because he is perceived to be a "Jewish" writer writing about "Jewish themes", I ask them to please read this book. The theme of the novel encompasses all aspects of human behavior and develops the omnipresent theme of ambivalence of action in making a decision. The book can be read in no more than two days, so put it to the top of your summer reading list.

A timeless tale of human emotions
Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904-1991) is one of the true literary giants of twentieth century literature. In this eight cassette, 9 hour, unabridged audiobook edition we are treated to one of his best stories, aptly narrated by Larry Keith. The Magician Of Lublin is a timeless tale of human emotions, questions, and quandaries as young Yasha's reckless courage takes him to the very edge of catastrophe. Singer had an unrivaled gift for creating very real, believable characters caught up in the vicissitudes of life and with whom we can all readily identify. The Magician Of Lublin is a "must" for the legions of Singer fans and would admirable serve to introduce a whole new generation to this master storyteller and his art.

A break from traditional Yiddish literature
I.J. Singer's work is a large-scale novel, with a multitude of characters and plots, the first attempt of a Yiddish writer to break away from the traditional short fiction depicting life in the shtelt. It is the result of exposure to European literature late in the 19th century, and reflects the dilemma of Jewish milieu torn apart from its traditional roots and having to face the rise of capitalism and communism. The main character, Max Ashkenazi is despicable by all means, obsessed by money and power, with a Machiavellian mind, and despite all his success has a sad end in life. Considering the conflicting time in which the novel takes place (first four decades of the 20th century), the main plot reflects the author's pessimistic and skeptic view of the place the Jew might have in modern society: be it amongst the capitalists or the communists, the Jew will always be misplaced and will never loose his stigma as scapegoat in times of trouble. The reader familiar with wthe work of Joshua's younger brother (Isaac Bashevis Singer) will certainly realize that the brothers share little in terms of literary production, each one with his own merits, albeit I.B. Singer surpasses in magnitude and depth.

It is good story, rich in character and broad in reach.
The story begins at the beginning, prior to the nearly simultaneous birth of two brothers. Not quite Cain and Abel, the brothers grow apart and together, mixing people, places, positions. With verve and breadth, it tells how each individual becomes his own choices, with the help and the hindrance of the Jewish community in Poland in the early 20th century. What a story!

amazing
This book is an amazing piece of work. You can really see the struggles that the Jewish population in Poland had to endure in the decades before WWII. Some of the characters are truly detestable at, other times they are to be pitied. All in all, a very tragic book.

Echoes Of The Holocaust
Although I agree with the criticisma made by other readers, I still loves "Shadows On The Hudson" and consider it a worthwhile and engrossing book.

Singer writes about a small group of exciles who survived the Holocaust be fleeing to New York City and creating a community in the shadows of the Hudson river. It was here that they contemplated their devastaing past and doubious future.

The characters are intelleigent and intense, anguished by their expulsion from their homeland and the collapse of their cultural and religious values.

A Brilliant Work
This is a long, deep novel that deals with some of the fundamental problems of human existence. More than any other writer, Singer (at least in this book) reminds me of Dostoyevsky, whose characters were constantly in existentialist turmoil over questions such as good vs. evil and whether or not there is a God (and if there is, is He good, evil or indifferent?) Of course, while Dostoyevsky was a Christian, all of the characters in Shadows on the Hudson are Jewish holocaust survivors who have recently emigrated to New York from Europe shortly after World War ll. This is something that none of them can forget, even for a day, as many barely escaped while their loved ones perished. Beyond this confrontation with evil and death, the novel is largely about the philosophical war between religious orthodoxy and hedonistic modern life. Contemporary readers who do not come from a strongly religious background may have some difficulty appreciating this dilemma. The mass culture that Singer found vulgar and amoral in the 50s has now all but taken over in America, leaving many people no frame of reference for any other type of existence. While there is much philosophizing, Singer succeeds in creating flesh and blood characters whose moral anguish is not simply abstract, but put to the test in daily life. The character we spend the most time with is Hertz Grein, a middle-aged man whose religious yearnings are in stark contrast to his lifestyle. He is a married man who has had a long affair with another woman. As the novel opens, he is preparing to run off with yet another woman. Grein's behavior through most of this book is both irrational and indefensible. He lies to all three women, and makes all his decisions on the whim of the moment. At the same time, he is hardly without a conscience. On the contrary, he is deeply ashamed of the pain he causes others and desperately wants to redeem himself. Reading Shadows on the Hudson, I got the feeling that Singer himself, as he wrote the book, was struggling with the very issues faced by Grein and his other, equally fascinating and conflicted characters. The central problem posed by the book is the paradox of faith. On the one hand, there is no evidence that God exists. Indeed, the prevalence of suffering and evil suggests an indifferent universe. On the other hand, life without faith is unbearable and leads to a world without meaning or values. Does this mean that we should, even in the absence of evidence, embrace a strict moral code? Although the conclusion of Shadows on the Hudson is somewhat ambiguous, Singer seems to answer this question tentatively in the affirmative. Whether or not you agree (I actually don't), the question is an extremely important one and this book gets to the core of it.

Fearlessly honest, even about fear; true, and beautiful
Shadows on the Hudson is one of the best novels I've ever read. The people are real--and thank god, they're deeply sexual and deeply intelligent. Some readers are irked by the one, some by the other characteristic; by me a novel flops if the people are too dumb, or too free from the driving burdens and blessings of relentless sexuality. This more or less simultaneous wrestling with sex, faith and its lack, and the problem of theodicy (why God permits evil) is Singer's forte. Only Tolstoy does it better, but there is more real flesh in Singer, while the religious issues are at least as alive as those of Tolstoy's stellar episode toward the end of Anna Karenina, in which Levin successfully struggles toward theism. Singer's characters know what Tolstoy's don't: that 6 million Jews and 20 million Russians are gone who should not be gone. This novel is art, and monumental art; not another pleasure cruise for the beach umbrella.

PORTRAIT OF A LEGEND
This book is a MUST for Frankie Laine fans.

It's full of information on the life and times of one of our all time greatest song stylists.

Although this isn't directly addressed in the book, Frankie Laine's career (72 years and counting) is itself an overview of 20th century American music. From his childhood inspiration by Al Jolson (music's first superstar), through his introduction to the Jazz world of the 1930s & 40s, his own years of superstardom in the late 40s/early 50s, to his forthcoming album OLD MAN JAZZ (appropriately title, as he's now 89 years old), Frankie Laine has been an integral part of it all.

As the first "Blue-eyed Soul singer," he played a seminal role in the switch-over from Big Band to the Golden Age of vocalists, and ultimately (if inadvertently) helped paved the way for the Rock era. Always experimenting, his records range from jazz, blues, folk, pop, cowboy songs, country and even some rock and roll.

(That and the fact that he's the best damn singer that ever was.)

Laine's book is written in an easygoing, entertaining style, and if it has one fault, it's that at 228 pages it only whets one's appetite for more.
