21st century writing, absolutely have to aquire this book!
Too good to be true! Very well reasearched and meant for the seriously interested over 40's woman who wants to be in perfect health to old age. A "must have" book which only comes along once in a very long time. Easy understandable even for a layman. Remarkable!

Crucial Reading
Crucial reading for anyone. What your doctor doesn't know and should know. I have sought long and hard for a doctor who is up to speed on the latest scientific research and I have found you need to see a good holistic doctor to find out what's really going on. The pharmaceutical peddlers are in the dark ages and you will pay for their ignorance with your health if you see one. Way to go Michael Colgan, keep up the excellant work!

Excellent introduction to nutrition for everyone.
Dr. Michael Colgan, is a genuine expert about all phases of nutrition. Although this book is an excellent guide to sports nutrition, it is also an excellent guide to nutrition for everyone. So please don't avoid it if you're not an althlete. Athletes, couch potatoes, and everyone in between will benefit from the complete and authoritative information about each essential vitamin and mineral contained in this highly-readable book. If you utilize the information it contains you will probably feel much better than you do now and may well also extend your life by a decade or so. And, if you are an athlete you will probably significantly improve your performance. Proper nutrition is that important and this book is that good.

Must read to be healthy.

You are most definitely what you eat - a must read!
Dr. Colgan does a great job explaining in layman's terms the importance of nutritional suplements as a survival mechanism to combat the absence of an adequate diet. He points out the lack of critical vitamins and minerals in the food we eat due to soil depletion, pollution, and the use of chemical fertilizers. He is not bashful about indicting the National Institute of Health and American Cancer Society for duping the American public about their level of nutrition and health. The American Cancer Society's trading the word cure rate to survival rate has fooled most of us. Naturally with all the sophisticated technology at our disposal, we are detecting the presence of cancer sooner - so it follows that people are "surviving" longer. There's no talk about the cure rate at all. Dr. Colgan, while sometimes brash, is refreshingly candid about how we can all take better care of ourselves through the use of nutritional supplements added to our diets that are woefully lacking the substances required for optimal health

The best I have read in this genre!
Dr. Colgan appears to be at the leading edge of research that is applicable to daily life. When you read this, you see how inadequate most current recommendations (like RDA and even the RealAge Health Quiz) are. Do you want to wait 20 or 30 years for adequately-proven, health- enhancing tactics to be "approved" by the Harvard Health letter and your doctor, or do you want to know about them and apply them now and prevent many problems down the road. For instance, Vitamin E took almost 50 years to be generally accepted as necessary. How many suffered needlessly in the meantime as their physicians scoffed at Vitamin E "the sex vitamin". This book puts you there now - it can improve health and save lives! Good Job.

A fundamental and informative guide to optimal haealth.
This book is a must to own. It is full of important information regarding the need for well-balanced diets, and the lack of proper nutritional supplementation most of our daily fods lack. Our bodies are truly amazing and serve as our temples for life. The need to properly feed our systems comes from our minds. As a registered Health Care worker, I feel it is very necessary to keep on top of nutrition and offer that info to everyone in a clear and easy to understand manner. Fantastic!
Yes, Yes, Dr. Colgan has a huge ego, but so what? the information is invaluable and the pictures (mostly of him) that example the exercises are like having your own personal trainer. Although he recommends a mentor, this book is mine. The techniques in the book are really increasing my strength!

SUPERB EXPLICATION FOR ACHIEVING MUSCLE PERFOMANCE OUTCOME
Dr. Michael Colgan's superb explanation and well illustrated text make for the reader an enjoyable understanding of how to apply the latest research shown techniques of periodic eccentric and concentric training for muscle performance outcome. The BEST book on strength training for athletic performance and your health I have ever read! Being a personal trainer and author (Weight Training Workouts that Work), I have researched just about everything on weight training ever written and implemented. This book is awesome! I learned more from this book - on proper exercises and how to do them - than any other book ever written.
All Dr. Michael Colgan's Books are top notch. I highly, highly recommend reading them all for anybody wanting to learn proper fitness and nutrition. Start with his books! VERY IMPRESSIVE

Excellent!-A must for any parent!
What a clever and fun way to teach children how they can protect themselves. As a journalist and producer, I've learned that often times the best way to get a message across to children is by utilizing their own imaginations. The book's illustrations are sweet and personable, sure to touch the heart of every child. The subject matter, though very difficult, is effectively relayed to children in a way they can appreciate, understand, and not fear! Rory becomes a special hero because he stands up and says "No" to protect himself. His bunny mom endears herself to the reader by comforting and praising her son for telling her what happened. She makes Rory, and the reader know, they should be proud and not ashamed for being able to tell a parent about an uncomfortable event. Bravo to the author and illustrator for a sensitive job well done! This book is a definite stocking stuffer for my 3 nieces and 2 nephews!

New directions
This is an excellent, clear and concise book that woke me up. After months of training, using the wrong kind of protein powder, and continued gas and bloating, I took Micheal Colgan's advice, and switched my protein powders. I no longer have gas or bloating, and I am stronger, bigger and healthier. Thanks.

Very Good Reference Book For Understanding Nutrition
I have been a longtime Dr Colgan reader through both his columns in Muscular Development and this book. Optimum Sports Nutrition is a great book for anyone, athlete or otherwise to draw on to construct their own nutritional regimen. He goes into great detail backs up every recommendation he makes with boatloads of statistics. I only have a few quibbles. The first is his hyping of Twinlab products - he clearly has a vested interest since he works for Twinlab's parent company. Having said that their products are excellent. Second the book could really do with updating notably including creatine as an ergogenic compound. Finally, and most seriously I feel his prescription of a low fat diet/high carb diet cannot possibly suit everyone. Although this type of diet will work well I feel more EFA's are required for most people. Furthermore he fails to touch upon ketogenic diets which many people find very effective for lowering their bodyfat percentage although it is a diet only really suitable for bodybuilders and the average joe. For a great book on this subject look up Lyle McDonald's "The Complete Guide to Ketogenic Diets".

An incredibly thorough guide, with one caveat
The information contained in this book is as astounding as it is fascinating. Everything you ever wanted to know about the relationship between diet and athletic performance is spelled out in detail. I've bought several sports nutrition books through Amazon.Com, read them all, but this is the one i continue to reference whenever a question arises.

One caveat though. Michael Colgan seems to have a very close connection to TwinLab, whose products he (at least openly) endorses every chance he gets. The book is published by ARP, which is owned by Twinlab, as is the magazine AN Muscular Development in which Dr. Colgans brilliant articles appear every month.

Excellent Book
I have read several books on nutrition and nothing compares to the information contained in this fantastic book. I am well educated myself having degrees in nutrition and biochemisty. I perused the information Dr. Colgan has presented and found it to be accurate in terms of the biochemical workings of the human body. Dr. Colgan has been able to convert difficult to understand material into a more eaisly understandable format. His credentials are outstanding. There is no other individual that I have come across that has his education and professional experience. Dr. Colgan is not your dime a dozen M.D. who writes a book on nutrition. He has a Ph.D in Biochemistry which is really what all of nutrition is based upon. The only thing that that I found negative was the excessive emphasis on Twin Lab products and some of the material on sports supplementation was out of date. Otherwise, the majority of the information I found to be of high quality. Both the athlete and non-athlete will find this book to be a welcome adjunct to thier nutrition knowledge and understanding.

Why hide credentials?
What I do not understand is why Dr. Colgan hides his credentials?
It should say what his professional credentials are if he is claiming to be a doctor. It becomes clear he is not an M.D. and that may not be a big deal if he were to tell somewhere, anywhere in the book what exactly is he a doctor of.

I am very supicious of a book by a person who is trying to be sneaky, bordering on deceptive by numerous references to his DOCTOR title.

See the future!!
WOW! What a book. Dr. Colgan again shows that the future of medicine is in nutritional suplementation as prevention. Prevention rather than cure.

This book explains why each supplement should be taken, and then explains a simple method of taking them every day.

BEAT ARTHRITIS is not just for those with joint problems, it's a great book for everyone,
