One of the most interesting - and funniest - books I've ever read, and certainly by far the best on masculinity. I especially enjoyed the masterpiece chapter on the movie 'Top Gun' which completely convincingly interprets it as a gay movie and shows how Cruise's real interest is Val Kilmer not Kelly McGillis.

Shortly after this book was published Quentin Tarantino appeared in a film called 'Sleep With Me' arguing this exact point. I wonder if he had a copy of Simpson's book in his dressing-room?

All programming books should be as good as this one; and yes the Official IE4 SiteBuilder Toolkit is indeed a web programming book. Alan Simpson covers cascading style sheets, Dynamic HTML, ActiveX controls and VBScript as well as any other author in the technical book publishing industry. Well, there are deeper books on ActiveX but they don't include smart, small, easy to test examples, like this one does. Alan Simpson's examples make excellent starting points for ones own experiments.Larger discussions of object models and technical specifications can also be found here along with listings for electronic (and other) resources to aid in further research and study. The appendix on RGB and decimal color values is a wonderful extra. Yes it's a Microsoft centric book, but you can have a lot fun with this one.

I have read many books on Dynamic HTML, CSS, etc., and this is one of the best! While the examples are at times a bit silly or self-indulgent, they always illustrate the point at hand in a clear and intelligent fashion. The author clearly has an excellent understanding of all parts of the DHTML world and leads the beginner through progressively more difficult steps very well.

The one inevitable caveat is that this book is based solely on DHTML/CSS for Internet Explorer and the examples will not work in Netscape. However, this book will provide you with a good understanding of the fundamentals necessary for programming for either browser.

I was actually able to sit and read the majority of this book on a flight without access to a computer at all. It really is very well written giving clear examples without over simplifying. You must remember that the techniques are for the most part specific to IE4 and therefore will not work with Netscape but I guess there are other books for that.

All aspects of DHTML are covered in a logical sequence and the only real prerequisite is some experience with web design and straight HTML. The CD is well stocked with examples and tools.

This is not a highly technical book to be digested by pure programmers, but it does provide a root to some powerful techniques for the slightly adventurous web author.

Without any doubt the most read of all of my computer books!

MS-DOS 5 is really old OS, but this book is, no question about that, the best book I've ever read. Alan Simpson has incredible gift to present, and explain, using simple but efficient way. There are many books out there in the field of computers, networking, programing etc., and many authors are just preparing thick, heavy books with a little really usefull explanation and information. The most of them don't know how to do the transfer of the essential information and knowledge. This book can be the Bible of Teaching for them, and after that they, I believe, will stop making money by selling books per kilograms of paper. The best book of MS-DOS 5 is not the only excellent book in point of explanation, it is also very good in presenting the syntax. Print is in good organized stile, not luxury, and that is the right way to make serious and also affordable book.

It's all there ! The way to the understanding of commercial systems. A strong computer programming foundation can be built here. Ability to create small business systems within a short period. Source codes can be compiled using Clipper (Most versions).

If you are putting your foot into the Internet, Web Publishing for the first time, then there is no better vehicle then Alan's HTML Bible. It explains concepts in a very straight fashion and makes things as simple as putting a hot knife through butter. The best that is there for beginners, but then that's what you get from Alan Simpson and Bible. A bestselling combination!!!

When my parents finally bought a computer, they also purchased this book. On the day my mother could explain Windows 98 to me, I bought a copy for myself. Simpson's book lives up to the claim that it is a friendly introduction to the basics. The author assumes that the reader has little or no prior computer experience, and the book may be used as either a tutorial or a reference. Simpson knows not only Windows 98, but also how to communicate it to readers. If you're new to computers or tired of just getting by in Windows 98, try this text. Illustrations, keywords in boldface, and marginal highlights make the material easier to find, learn, and remember. Additionally, there are chapter-end summaries. I also enjoy having room to make notes in the margins. The content includes: understanding hardware and software basics, organizing windows, managing files, using the web, getting e-mail, printing, troubleshooting, etc.

This book, now 5 years old, looks prescient in light of Bernard Goldberg's expose from INSIDE the media monster. Read Simpson for the real story of his battles with the biased Nina Totenberg and Peter Arnett and the press's savage abuse of Clarence Thomas, who had the effrontery to be black and conservative.

Written in a clear and very understandable way, this book received accolades from PC Magazine and is considered the reference book of choice. Starts with the first concepts & leads to more complex tips, tricks,& programming for better database management tools for mailing lists, A/R, inventory management, etc. dBASE commands and concepts are illustrated throughout with practical, business-oriented examples. I found it great to use even for CD or album collections, etc. - put dBASE to work for you - this book will easily help you do it on your own.

I liked this book because it made a nice desktop guide to this program. It was easy to navigate through.
