A Picture Book of Simon Bolivar (Picture Book Biography)

The simplest illustration of a wonderful hero
I think this book is excellent in drawing the picture about how much this South American means. More than a hero, and resemblance to George Washington is an inspirational character for children. Javier Florez (Newark, NJ)

Simon Bolivar, the George Washington of South America
"The George Washington of South America". Such comparisons are usually not pertinent. This one, and with this book, it is. It is, because Simon Bolivar would have liked it himself. He carried with him, always, until his last moment, the Yorktown medal of George Washington, with his miniature picture and a lock of his hair, given to him by Mrs. Washington via the General / Marquis Lafayette, the French hero of the American War of Independence. So this marvelous book brings Simon Bolivar to the hands and imagination of USA children and some adults! The man that with the help of Britain, personified in the mostly Irish British Legion, liberated six nations of South America. The man that conceived the union of the American Sub-Continents. With exquisite drawings, not always accurate but always kind and nice to look at, this beautiful book is a great homage to diversity in the Americas, and to the fact that success flows in both directions.

Italy's best kept secret.
Anyone who has ever considered taking a trip to the beautiful island of Sicily, should not even pack before reading this book. My friend and I just returned from a trip to this remarkable island and during the trip, we coincidentally stayed at a few of the places mentioned in this book and had an incredible time. While at one of the locations, I spotted the book. After only a few minutes of perusing, I knew I HAD to have this book. The Donovans, Simon and Robert had pretty much experienced a similar trip and I knew their vivid recount would help us remember the breathtaking land, the proud, gracious, full-of-life people who live there, and the indescribable food they produce. Their travel tips are right-on and a must for any Sicilian traveller. It has also inspired me to compile a travel journal of our trip. As a graphic designer myself, I also compliment the incredible layout and design. A wonderful coffee-table book for anyone to cherish.

Molto bene.
Grazie tanto Gail, Kevin, Simon and Robert!

Pack your bags, your camera, and your appetite!
When you read this book - should I say 'sample' it - and see the wonderful photographs of Italian landscapes, architectural features, and mouth watering food, have your 'plastic' ready, and a telephone nearby so you can book your own adventure.

This book may just be the best combination touring/cooking/picture-taking guide to Italy that you will find. And hats off to the book designer who made it into a wonderful travel scrapbook. The design alone is the definitive guide to producing your own travel journal/diary/photo album. You will want to make a book like this for your own journey(s).

For [the price], this is as close as you can get to being in Italy. In fact, if you play some of the Cieli di Toscana CD by Andrea Bocelli, drink a nice dry Italian red wine, and eat a little Bruschetti as you browse the pages of this coffee table book, you may be magically transported.

Salute!

An Honest Review
Have you ever looked at your parent's book collection? Notice how they tend to pick up books by the same author, time and time again. I can say that after reading the first 8 chapters of Building Rich Internet Applications that I will be looking for more titles from both of these authors.

First of all the title of this book is a little misleading,
because it delivers A LOT more than just information and hands on demonstrations for building RIA w/MX.

Other things you'll learn
- Object-oriented programming concepts and practice.
- Proper coding syntax for writing actionscript.
- How to use actionscript to create a user interface with flash.
- How to write ColdFusion components that allow Flash to access databases via Flash Remoting.

These are just a few things I have picked up on after reading about half of the book. You will also learn how to put together a nice workflow process for a dynamic site from the database to the UI. There is also a great website that goes with the book where you'll ACTUALLY get to communicate with the authors directly.

That's all for now... After I finish the book I'll have to come back and let you know how the rest of it went. I recommend this book for anyone at any skill level who has an interest in extending Flash to it's full capabilities.

Complex Topics, Easy to Follow
In this their latest book, Reinhardt and Allardice have written a wonderfully comprehensive, easily understandable explanation of the numerous new technologies (Flash Communication Server, Flash Remoting) with which Macromedia is radically changing the Web. Their thorough explanations satisfy both the needs of the newbie, and the desires of the expert. I am highly recommending this book for consumption by all of my University students.

The Definitive RIA Companion
Everything I need for building RIAs all under one cover. I highly recommend this book. The explanations in the book are thorough, lucid and well-written. I expect nothing less from these two writers.

Java 1.1 Developer's Handbook

Where other books stop this one continues
This books introduces the more advanced Java topics, wich are mentioned in other books but never explained. This book explains these topics in clear and easy to understand way. If i see a Sybex book i mostly leave it in the bookstore, but this book is ok to pick up!

Fab...fab...fab...fab...fab...fab...fab...fab...fabulous!!
This is definitely one of the better (a lot better!) books on Java I've bought so far(I've got about 10 others). Explains difficult topics well. I use a more general book on Java for a general view of the language/classes and I use this one for more difficult topics which a lot of books only mention but do not explain. The use of diagrams and figures together with easy to follow explanations gives a better understanding of Java topics like streams, threads and networking.

Very detailed and specific look at Java features
After taking a class from Phil, I went ahead and bought his book. I have found it to be one of the best resources for general Java matter, as well as in depth discussions on advanced technologies. A+ Phil.
