Don't be Fooled by other author's who write MAC FOR DUMMIES BOOKS. David Pogue is the Master Mac writer. Anyone else is a pale wannabee. This book helped me learn to use my Mac within a week and I didn't even feel any pain! It was fun to read and easy to follow. I'm ready!!! More, More, More!! Marilyn

More terrific!
If you read & enjoyed MAC FOR DUMMIES, you will Love this one. It is even funnier& more informative than MAC FOR DUMMIES. It will help you with all those questions you are afraid to call Apple about because you think they will write "DUH" next to your name in a secret Mac File and you will sound like the numero uno Mac expert at the next users meeting or in the office with very little effort on your part. Mr. pogue does all the heavy lifting & we benefit. Thank you for another great Mac book, Mr. Pogue. Keep 'em coming. Eileen

More Macs = more information, more knowledge, more fun!
Folks, I bought my Mac, a copy of Macs for Dummies, and in just a week I was flying with it! I went back to the store and grabbed a copy of More Macs for Dummies, and have been having a ball with my Mac ever since. These books are NOT manuals, indeed, I read mine "away" from my computer, by taking the book to work with me and reading on my breaks. Each night, I'd try out my new-found knowledge on my Mac. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! Every Mac home should have Macs & More Macs for dummies on their shelves. David Pogue is a delightful author; humourous, knowlegeable, and a fantastic teacher

Elegant children's stories written and read by Carly Simon
I am so happy to find this audiobook again! I played it in the car for my oldest daughter to calm her when she was a baby. Carly Simon's language and voice is soothing and musical to the ear. I need it again now because my oldest daughter is now 8, and is learning to write using "descriptive language". Carly Simon's writing for these stories is so vivid that my daughters and I feel like we are the little bear who cannot sleep because the moon is full and the breeze is coming in through our window and we just must listen to music and dance, we feel like the boy running up the bell tower for the first time to ring the bells welcoming Santa to the town called Noel because his old grandfather is too tired to continue the tradition today- the glorious bells cheers the boy's saddened sister. In the third story we feel like the maiden living with a sailor on a faraway island where life moves rythmically like the tides (my cousin disliked this story because the maid and the fisherman are not married and he leaves her to return to the sea-my two girls (age 5 & 8) are so enthralled by Carly Simon's voice and words that they don't even think about this issue). Do not pass up the chance to introduce your children to what beautiful wrirting sounds like when read by a musician like Carly Simon.

Beautiful illustrations and a warm and caring storybook.
This is a cute and funny story of Amy, the dreamer and her patient and loving mommy. Margot Datz's illustrations created a pretty and colorful display of the landscape surrounding a gingerbread cottage on the Vineyard. Complete with mauvey wisterias and the detailed picture of flower seeds just sprouting in egg cartons on the window sills in Amy's bear's house. The whole book looks great. Elegant and a timeless story for children and their mothers.

This is a great book
I received this book when I was 3 years old. I am now 16 and to this day, I love this book. I always loved Carly Simon and if you like her music, you will love her wonderful book. I am buying it for my niece Victoria, and hope she will love this book as much as I do. It shows the love between a mother and daughter while also using your imagination. I love it!

A Joy to Read Aloud
As a parent, I found that I got as much enjoyment out of reading this book to my daughter as she enjoyed being read to. The illustrations are a delight, and, just like the text, reveal something new with each reading.

I want to go to Midnight Farm!
Midnight Farm is an excellent story with wonderful illustrations. It is a whimsical tale about two little boys on a farm who wake one night to find their farm animals and crops rockin'. My two year old wants to read it every night because of the amusing rhythm, and I oblige, because even as an adult, I have yet to tire of the fantasy that everyday objects lead secret lives! The pictures are beautiful, with a mystical feel and tons of detail. You notice something new almost every read.

This book also has a sweet vulnerability that many of Carly's songs have which makes it very enduring. Overall, Midnight Farm is a great book that will appeal to several age groups. I wish it were more available- it would make a great gift book.

Midnight Magic!
Of all of the books that I have read to my three kids, this is my favorite. It is so magical, so beautiful. I have read it over and over again, and never get tired of it. Midnight Farm brings the dark night to life, and my children's imaginations go wild with all of the magical possibilties of what goes on when we are all asleep. This is a book that I give to all of the children that I love. It is magic!

This is such a beautiful book!
My four year old loves this book! And I do, too, thanks to the lovely illustrations and rhythmic text. It is entertaining and great for a bed-time read. I wish Carly Simon would write more and get the same illustrator! He's fabulous!

Uninspired photographs and more boomer self aggrandizement
I wanted to like this book, I really did, but I couldn't get past the amateurish tone as Simon retreads that well trod path that amounts to the sixties generation stations of the cross--wealthy childhood, discovering drugs and sex at college, dropping out and living off your parents on a commune, plugging into Eastern philosophies and, finally, capitalizing on "the good old days". I found the photographs mundane and the essays almost unbearable as Simon chronicles his constant drug taking and drifting from place to place. As another reviewer wrote, I don't think we would have seen this book printed if not for his name and his celebrity sister.

If You Remember the '60's...
It's been said that if you remember the '60's you probably weren't really there. It's a good thing Peter had a camera because he probably would have been wondering himself what those days were like. Parts of his world, beautifully recorded, jar our memories. Whether these memories are painful or delightful, they are part of our collective story. Many '60's communes didn't allow photographs, so these may be rarer than one assumes. The book is worth looking at and reading.

Makes me wish I was born a few years earlier
Peter Simon is a talented photojournalist, and this book is the story of his life, with a definite emphasis on the 60's and early 70's counterculture years, which he lived to the fullest. It's all here: the protests, living on a commune, the eastern spiritual gurus, flirtations with nudism, the (impressive) series of hippy girlfriends, the rock stars (he's Carly Simon's brother).

I'm sure other members of his generation will find the book very nostalgic. As for me, it's almost enough to make we wish I'd been born 10 or 15 years sooner. I went to college during the early years of the Reagan administration. The 60's obviously weren't a very happy time, but it would be hard to imagine someone of my generation putting out a book like this: who would care?

The later chapters of the book are an odd lot of whatever he was shooting during those years of his life. Therefore we have some baseball coverage, some photos of landscapes and his celebrity friends on Martha's Vineyard and some coverage of Woodstock 1999. I'd judge these chapters as substantially less interesting than the early ones.

One thing this book does illustrate is the importance of connections in getting a book of photography published. I'm not saying it's not a worthy project: it certainly is. But a lot of worthy projects are never published, and it's hard to believe his sister's celebrity and his family's connections in the publishing industry ("Simon" is the "Simon" in "Simon & Schuster") weren't key factors, especially for a virtually unknown photographer.

What a waste!
Not only is the accompanying tape only about 10 min in total length, but there are only about 10 rhymes in the whole book!

I bought this for my nephew as a 'starter nursery rhyme' book. My SIL likes to sing, &thought this would be good for all. After receiving, they were strangely silent about it. When I finally visited last wk, I was horrified to see how badly I'd been ripped off. I couldn't apologize enough.

#1 - each little verse is sung only once.
#2 - as mentioned, the tape looks like a joke. If it plays 5 whole min before it needs to be switched to other side, I'd be surprised.
#3 - They could've at least made the book better, by putting each verse on it's own page w/picture, but no, it's a couple per page with one main graphic & tiny ones maybe for the other verses.

Book is good for toddlers, with hard pages, but is so short, & the TAPE IS SO SHORT, that it is a total waste of time to even put in a cassette player.

Was Carly desperate for a payck or did she just not care????

A wonderful book!
It is a whimsical and enchanting book! My 3 1/2 year old daughter requests it every night. She has memorized all the rhymes, and it is a complete delight to listen to her sing along. Thank you Carly Simon for bringing such joy to our bedtime routine!

This book is a treasure for children and adults alike!
Carly Simon has done a wonderful job with this book of classic Mother Goose rhymes. The book is very colorful, which helped keep my niece's attention, and the illustations will be loved by the kids. Carly's tape of the ryhmes is pefect for children to listen too, and quite nice for Carly's "older" fans as well. This is a must for every child's collection!

fun to own but you dont need to have
i bought the book because i have spent 25 years going to martha's vineyard--the book is inspiring because it makes you want to have a potluck party at your own home--but dont buy it simply for the recipes--they are fine--buy it because its a fun addition to your collection and inspires you to celebrate family and friends-- and martha's vineyard--
the author's friends (whom she touts as a very eclectic group) happen to include all of the island's celebs---which does make it fun to look at the pics and read their recipes--

Simply a beautiful book!
This book was given to me as a hostess gift during our first cocktail party (Ina Garten and Barefoot Contessa inspired) from a friend who knows that I love all things New England, especially Cape Cod and the Islands.

The photographs are delicious in and of themselves, even inspiring a few unusual bouquets of flowers and eclectic ideas for table settings. There are a few recipes that seem unappealing to me, but that is true of any book. An author simply cannot please everyone! For the most part I have found these recipes to have different and creative twists on many favorite flavors.

I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the "magical" element of the Vineyard as well as its' celebrity life. This is certainly not a book for those who want to throw hot dogs on the grill behind a split -evel home - not that there is anything wrong with that! It is for those who want to add an element of style to their backyard picnic behind that same split-level home. Potluck at Midnight Farm is about doing things with grace, that is, a Vineyard-style grace.

potluck at midnight farm-fabulous
This beautifully photographed book is more than a cookbook. Each guest who brought a dish contributed a paragraph explaining the value their recipe holds to them personally. It is nice to see a warm sense of friendship and community so fashionably displayed and organized. The fear factor is taken out of shying away from trying the recipes as these are favorites and specialties of the recipe contributors. You will find something new everytime you open the book, just as if you were to visit Midnight Farm itself.
