This book is filled with classic folk songs/ballads/hymns/lullabies, etc. that shouldn't be forgotten. They're songs for adults and children alike that have formed the roots of many current songs and stories.

Easy to play, impossible to forget. Everyone who plays guitar or is learning to play needs this book.

This book is, quite simply, amazing. Obviously it is not bebtime reading material, but it is one of the most complete works on the history of music that I have ever seen. Elie Siegmeister has done a simply amazing job of compiling the best sections, for each subject, from over thirty different books. All of these books are written by true masters of music and names include the likes of Aaron Copland, Charles Ives and Lawrence Abbot. The 200 plus sections cover a vast range of musical headings from basic musical components (melody, harmony, musical form etc.) to the main classical composers from each period to the instruments to the jazz scene as well as many, many more. The copy, in our college library, is a 1973 pressing featuring a section (written at about this time) about how things had changed between 1943 (when the book was first completed) and 1973. A newer copy may contain a newer section yet. It is quite amazing how a book from fifty-seven years ago, can be so brilliantly relevant in the modern day. I would say that this book is a must for anybody studying music at a high level, or for anybody needing to carry out substantial research in to the making of music. A true masterpiece.
