Terminally boring
When I read the back of the book I thought it would have been a real medical thriller. I found it rather bland. It took a while to get into it. The idea behind the book reminded me of a Robin Cook book I read. The story did pickup and there was a lot of suspense but the end was a real disappointment.

Suspense!
This book is a real page turner. It was my first Shobin novel and I kept comparing him to Robin Cook. I must say his characters are much more believable than Cook's. Above all the woman protagonist, because this is where Cook almost infallibly fails. I appreciated, too, that Shobin did not elaborate too much in scientific explanations. This would have killed the tension. I will certainly read all the other novels by David Shobin.

GRABS YOU FROM THE START! Messy, ... & realistic Thriller!
Gee Whiz!! I didn't think I would survive until the end, this was so good! I really enjoyed this story line, the characters were pretty well developed, and the possibilities for the comatose patient use is very startling. I LOVED IT!!

Medical thriller
An exciting medical techno-thriller in the genre of Robin Cook where a pregnant woman finds that her yet-to-be born child is taking control of her body. No, this is not one of those Satan's-Child type of stories - more of a science-fiction tale

Cancel My Appointment
Seems no one cared to review for a couple years. This author is new to me and my opinion of this book does not match the other reviews. I found it hard to buy the events in this story. The gulliblity of Steve was just too much. I could hardly finish the story. Why did it take him so long and need for eavesdropping equipment to realize his lover's involvement. I'm sorry but I'll take Robin Cook's thrillers any day.

4 1/4 stars
See story summary above.

I thought this was a very enjoyable medical thriller. It reads similar to a Robin Cook novel. The backbone of the novel is about herbal supplements. Good or Bad? You decide. Though an average medical thriller, it will educate you at the same time it entertains you. Both emotional and suspenseful, it will definitely keep you intrigued.

Recommended for the lover of medical thrillers.

THE CURE-DELIVERS!
The CURE was the most suspenseful read I've gone through in over a year. What I like about David Shobin is his style. Most writers in this genre use shallow, stick-figure characters, but Shobin talks about real people with real issues. Hero Dr. Steve McLaren is an insecure former alcoholic who struggles with his disease. The thorny issue of euthanasia is very tactfully presented. Shobin is a master at getting the most out of his characters. For anyone who likes medical thrillers, this is a must read.

The Center
I really injoyed this book. It was a great medical thriller with some good twists and turns. The charecters are beleaveable and the plot boarderlines where we are already headed. For once the main charecters didn't sneak by they actually had to get themslefs out of trouble.

The thirller of thrillers
The Center is thrilling from the time the 4 year old is placed into the Crematory to the time that Chad & Maks begin their fight with with the robotics of the center and they all dive out the window after making the explosion to make the window. The plot twist and turns so much you have no idea where the story is taking you. I sat on the edge of my seat through out the whole book. I cried in the beginning and the end. A must read book for the mystry buffs and thriller fans all over.

A really riviting page turner
This medical thriller by David Shobin, will keep you rivited to your chair. This is one of the most believeable book I've read in a long time. You won't be able to put it down.

Disappointing drivel
This book is such a disappointment that it doesn't even deserve a review. The writing is amateurish, the plot ridiculous, the characters wooden and unbelievable. How this book was published is beyond me. Stay away!!!

Interesting
I was recommended this book by a good friend, I am very glad I read it, I was very skeptical at first though because I thought medical thrillers would be diffucult for me to understand, but I found it easy to read.
The plot itself was unique and I did enjoy it, but it could have been written differently. There were a lot of different situations going on that were interesting to read. Morgan Robinson and Brad Hawkins have the same suspicions about the babies that are dying in the NICU unexpectantly and they dont know why. So they start looking to find answers, what they get, as usual, goes way beyond what they thought they were getting into.

Interesting as a medical thriller, but..
Although it's a horrible story as the neonates are the victims,
it's still possible when the managed care went too far.
As a foreigner, I hope the American managed care system is kept under far more close observation in reality.
I would rate this book 5, were it not for the unnecessary scuffle of the last 40 pages. Leave it in NYPD hands, doctors!!
I wonder why the medical or forensic thriller writers including P. Cornwell, K. Reichs, want to put unnecessary, unreal fighting scenes without probability.

Mediocre Medical Thriller
Jacqueline Ramsey, an actress, has an obsession. That obsession is her weight. Who could have thought that Dr. Hume, the charming head of a luxurious diet clinic, has something sinister to do with Jacqueline's nightmare? Only Jacqueline's psychiatrist lover suspects something...

It is easy to see why The Obsession is out of print. This book is not bad, it is quite well written and rather entertaining at times. But that is all it is - it has no true originality, no chilling insights or characters who the reader would love to bits. Morever, the premise is a little silly, some events seem implausible and the villain and his motives are disappointing and cliched. Despite a few gross moments, everything stays neat and sterile. The reader never faces real terror.

When I read the book, I got the impression that David Shobin had tried very hard to write a page-turner. Maybe he tried it a bit too hard. There are dozens of better thrillers which don't have any more depth th! an The Obsession but which still manage to captivate the reader. This book deserves to stay in obscurity.
