Psychological and Transcendental Phenomenology and the Confrontation With Heidegger (1927-1931): The Encyclopaedia Britannica Article, the Amsterdam Lectures, "Phenomenology and Anthropology" and Husserl's Marginal Notes in Being and Time and kant (Edmund Husserl Collected Works, Vol 6)

Phenomenological Confrontations
In the clash with Heidegger, Husserl's phenomenology came into close contact with a devisive bug named "intersubjectivity". After dealing with the differences inherent in their two positions, Husserl decided that the only way to remedy the situation, and therefore phenomenology, was to begin work on the phenomenological analytic of ethics, or how to found the possibility of an ethics (this comes thorugh in the Amsterdam lectures).

To the book's credit, it demonstrates clearly that where Heidegger lived a sum ergo cogito, Husserl rather thought the cogito ergo sum, all the way through to its "liminal" zone, the border. This began the confrontation, and would also soon end it. Thus some of the decisive problems addressed in this Encyclopedia Brittanica book with regards to phenomenology are: history, the subject, time, the other, the possibility of phenomenology with respect to the position on time, etc. Derrida would indeed, as another reviewer has unwittingly pointed out, characterize some of these problems as the break between "the laugh" and the laser-fine gaze of reason. That is, if time is a problem for phenomenology in Husserl's sense, one must laugh at the possibility of phenomenology. If it is rather a problem in Heidegger's sense, then one must phenomenologically laugh (see "An Intro to Husserl's 'Origin of Geometry'")...Well worth the money either way.

a laugh riot
Edmund Husserl was the leading comedic writer of his time... This book is a strong example of his work and sheds new light on the relationship with his moronic sidekick, Martin Heidegger.

A Fascinating Story of Man's Fascination with the Moon
The authors are to be commended on weaving together the lives and observations of three centuries of those people who dedicated great amounts of time and effort into studying our nearest celestial neighbor with the telescope. Interesting. exciting and unique is how I would sum up the telling of this facet of the history of Astronomy. Beginning with Galileo's first telescopic observations and culminating with Man's arrival on the moon this book tells it all. I was most impressed with the incredible amount of work that went into the mapping of the moon in ever increasing detail as telescopes became better and better. Enjoying the sketching of lunar formations at the eyepiece myself I can appreciate the size of the task of drawing the entire visible face of the moon as seen through a telescope. Yet this was done on several different levels of perfection by a very few observers and was the only record available before the invention of lunar photography came along. Not only is this a great history of lunar observation, but also tells the story of the history of the telescope. The wealth of pictures of the early telescopes is a delight in itself and adds a great deal to the text. I would most certainly recommed this book to anyone interested in the moon, or the history of astronomy. A well done to the authors. One of the authors is a psychiatrist and I assume it was his input which resulted in the emotions and thought processes of the characters in the book seeping out between the lines and made the book all the more enjoyable. It was also obvious that both authors are observers themselves.

I liked it a lot because it had the word 'heart' in it.
This book was very thought provoking and interesting. It had a pretty cover that was very glossy. I loved the cover. I decided to hang it up on my wall. If there was an art gallery for pretty and glossy covers, this would be the first entery. I also liked the book. It was very thought provoking and interesting.

Strong debut
I'm a sucker for any anthology that ends with Richard Petty accepting the National Book Award. . . This one also has a lot of heart. The first of what promises to be an annual collection of stories promoting "a rebirth of beauty and life-affirming values," the Silver Rose Anthology offers a strong mix of voices and attitudes. Not every story here will appeal to every reader (the opening story, for instance, does little for me), but the collection overall is outstanding. Personal favorites (in addition to George Singleton's outrageous "Richard Petty Accepts the National Book Award") include Robert Olen Butler's seamless "Rafferty and Josephine," Julie Orringer's touching "Note to Sixth-Grade Self" Patry Francis'"Limbe," and Patricia Hackbarth's provocative "A Brief Geological Guide to Canyon County."
Move over Bill Henderson, Katrina Keneson, and Larry Dark. Watson's in the house!

Great Stories, Great Book!
When Kevin Watson gathered the stories for this anthology, he was doing us a public service. This is a hard world: hearts break, and lives are shattered. Stories that don't deal with those realities aren't true to life. But there's so much more to life--and should be to art. These stories are "life-affirming" in the best kind of way: They don't stay sunk in gloom, but they don't stoop to easy answers. Each one shows us a new facet of getting on with life, making things work, following the path. The individual stories are excellent--I especially like the story by Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Olen Butler, although it's one of several strong stories--and in their cumulative effect, the collection becomes (and I mean this in the best kind of way) inspirational.

Silver Rose Anthology
i only gave this book 5 stars because i could not give it more. i went to a reading of one of the writers and soon went on to read the rest. it has a good mix of voices, but by far the best writer is Heidi Shayla and her story "The Coffin Builder's Romance", it is a beautiful story of quilts, boxes, and of course, coffins. it is my all time favorite anthology, and i would definetly recomend it.

Florida Landscape Plants
This is a worthwhile book for a number of reasons, however, it has one major omission. The positive factors: 1) Excellent plant descriptions including details like salt tolerance level; 2) wonderful (and most appreciated) treatment of botanic names by giving the pronunciation and derivation of the Latin words (Thanks!). The omission concerns color photographs of the plants discussed. The publisher included a few color pages of plant drawings which are mostly useless and confusing. A good garden book needs to have extensive color photographs. I am sure that the author would agree!!

The absolute last word on Florida Landscape Plants!
This is the text book used to teach horticulture classes and plant identification at the University of Florida. All Horticulture graduates and Landscape Architecture graduates at UF have studied from this book. Dr.s Watkins and Sheehan have put more than 5 decades of combined Florida horticultural expertise into this book.

The Best All-Purpose Guide to Britain!
I have traveled to England a dozen times and I own current editions of 12 different guidebooks. This is far and away the best. It has the most useful information in the easiest to use format. For one thing it has all the travel planning facts you need. In addition, the destinations are described with writing that is evocative, imaginative and accurate. The recommendations are reliable and I was never steered wrong in selecting lodgings and restaurants. Before I found this book, I had to combine three different books to get all the information that's included in this one. From a veteran traveler, I highly recommend the Lonely Planet guide.

A Great Asset to any trip to Great Britain
This summer I took an awesome two week tour of Great Britain with Contiki Tours. The tour was great because of how it mixed a rigid tour with free time. My free time was excellent thanks to the information in this guide. I had used Lonely Planet before when I visited China. They did a great job on that book and they did a great job on this one. The information, history, culture and advice are priceless. This is a great guidebook to have. Lonely Planet might not have zillions of colour pictures, but it has priceless information and commentary.

Orchid beauty and Book beast
OK
but not what I was expecting, most of my plants didn't survive using their method as opposed to guidence from actual orchid growers.

Some Laelia's did grow using his techniques, whilst other methods from other authors didn't work to laelia's.
Which is a good think for this book!!!

Beautiful Pictures
This book is very nice with respect to the orchid pictures they have in here. Very nice for a coffee table center piece and an excellent gift to inspire a soon to be orchid lover. They would be absolutely awestruck with their beauty and these photos bring out the best qualities in the flowers. It gives a good description but maybe a little too simple for those in the advance stages of growing. They do, though, have some nice pictures of fairly rare orchids. For example, there is a picture of a Cymbidium canaliculatum there that is absolutely beautiful (not variety sparkesii!. Growing tips are okay, but the book is more for the identification part and the enjoyment of the family Orchids.

Amazing pictures!
If you are looking for a book with great clear pictures of the
many different types of orchids this is the book for you!

It is great for Identifying the different species you see and want to know what they are.

Has some informational parts about the orchid and how it has been used over time and civilizations. GREAT BOOK!

Ideas not novel but presented well
There has always been speculation on how an obscure Jewish sage who lived 2,000 years ago became the object of a religion that has changed mankind more than any social movement in history. Even more interesting is how little we actually know for sure - his parentage, city of birth, actual teaching or why he was killed. Without any external historical references, we are left with only the New Testament, a series of writings composed from 40-65 years after Jesus's death, none by eye witnesses.

Sheehan has attempted to explain how a Jewish peasant evolved into God within a century. He starts, like many Bibical critics, noting the discrepancy between date of composition and order of presentation in the New Testament. Paul's letters came first, then Mark, Matthew, Luke/Acts and finally John. One can easily trace the growth in stature following this line of evidence.

Paul knew nothing of the physical man. He never believed in a physical resurrection, preaching that some raised did not have a physical body like us but a spiritual one. No mention of God's son or being a God.

Mark (next) starts with the adult man. Luke and Matthew, written some 80 years after his birth contained the Nativity and early life. John, completed toward the end of the century opens with the stirring "In the Beginning was the Word". We are at the beginning of the Universe and there is Jesus and God as one.

We follow the evolutionary streams as words are changed, ideas added, ancient prophecies are quoted out of context and at last Jesus is judged God by a political convocation. Interesting, Sheehan finds all the talk of a coming Kingdom as the kernel of the teachings. This is Jesus's revolutionary message - that the kingdom of God is internal and can exist now, not some mystical future. That's a stretch but still a good read.

Sheehan is wrong, but he can write well.
The idea that the U.S. did not mean to or even seek to take Indian land is prepostorous. It is obvious in looking at The Trail of Tears that all along the U.S. Gov't wanted to take land, no matter how civilized a society the Cherokees became.
