Small but Powerful
I give this book a 5, and I own a lot of fishing books.

When I first purchased the book it seemed a bit small, would it be worth it? It was.

In short chapters it discusses how to improve your fishing, tournament ethics, and family fishing. That's a lot of ground.

Tired of all those birds nests in your spinning reel? Why not follow Shaw's advice and cast and tug your line gently. No more snarls. Shaw doesn't use the word ethics but that's what he's talking about for tournaments. Read it, and you'll fish differently with your buddies. As for family, Shaw's kind remarks about his wife, kids and dad are special.

I didn't realize it until now but this is a great kid's book also. It works on different levels. Hope the review helps.

A MUST READ
At 47 years old I am new to bass fishing. As a trout fisherman all my life I have never been a fan Bass fishing! This book has given me all the basics of how to catch and understand Mr. Bass in very easy to read format. Plus it offers an outlook that will change your point of view of life and fishing. An author I would really like to meet!

Shaw Grigsby is a master human being.
As a novice fisherman, I found that Shaw Grigsby has a grasp of what one needs to become a "real fisherman." It takes alot more than casting and hoping that a fish will take the bait. It is a very cerebral sport and Mr. Grigsby is able to get across in his writing how to fish the correct way and to be most productive in your endeavor. One thing that made me feel good was when he wrote about even the best fishermen, champions, sometimes getting "Skunked." Just a real delight to read and very easy reading too. My most recent fising trip was kind of a flop, but I did use his advice and it worked. Wonderful book for the novice or the veteran fisherman. Would love to meet Shaw Grigsby and pick his mind on the wonderful sport of fishing.

Search for the Flaming Chalice -- Fresh Magic
"Search for the Flaming Chalice" by Robert Shaw Kesler is adelightful adventure story. I read it aloud to my nine-year old whodescribed it as "suspenseful and funny." This book features three clever, courageous martens in an ever-surprising plot. The evocative descriptions, punchy dialogue, and tension-relieving humor make for a wonderful chapter book. This fresh take on adventure and magic is highly recommended.

Exciting Adventure For All Ages!
"Search For the Flaming Chalice" was an exciting adventure that will definately be loved by all ages. I can't wait to read it to my two year old someday. There are some very important values to be learned by these witty martens...teamwork, friendship, and faith are just a few. You won't be disappointed by this book of adventure, mystery, good versus evil, and humor!

Kesler shows flare for fantasy with ¿¿Flaming Chalice¿
"Search for the Flaming Chalice" transports its readers into the magical, marten-filled world of Toveria where sorcerers battle for power and enchanted gems, murderous sewn-together monsters, and angry spirits dominate everyday encounters. I thought the book was a charming story with enough mystery, action, and silliness to captivate younger readers. As an older reader, I enjoyed the humor and the many camouflaged literary references. In today's environment where children are besieged with frenetic, cross-marketed trash such as Pokemon and Power Rangers, parents can take heart that "Search for the Flaming Chalice" gently teaches children the importance of friendship, family, courage, persistence, and teamwork while entertaining them.

Tremendously inspiring - gorgeous photography
I'm a weekend quilter - and love working with rich color. This is not only a coffee-table beautiful book but it inspires creative ideas far beyond normal quilting. You don't have to be a quilter to enjoy - the art is wonderful. And if you do quilt, this will inspire you to all sorts of radically new ideas.

Recommended for needlecraft students, quilters & collectors.
Robert Shaw draws upon his impressive expertise to celebrate the traditional bed quilt as a needlecraft art form that is a creative, emotional, example of "form following function". His insightful text traces the transformation of the quilt from bed cover to display piece, the quilter from homemaker to academically trained artist, the workshop from kitchen to studio, and the materials from simple to complex. The Art Quilt is superb survey of an art form grounded in tradition and, at the same time, committed to originality and innovation. The works of such superb contemporary quilters as Michael James, Yvonne Porcella, Julia Pfaff, Nancy Crow, and more than two hundred others, serve to illustrate the quilt as art -- and the art of the quilt. The Art Quilt is enhanced with 300 full-color reproductions and numerous insightful sidebars of important technical processes and leaders int he art quilt field. The Art Quilt is highly recommended reading for needlecraft students, quilters, collectors, and popular culture enthusiasts.

Incredible quitls, great gift
From the moment I set eyes on this book I knew I had to have it. The quilts are totally incredible. The skill of these quiltmakers & the detail they obtain is astonishing. They are true artists. It is a great value.

The abstract quilts combine color, pattern & shape so beautifully it takes your breath away. Surface techniques such as dyeing, painting, applique & embroidery make these quilts remarkable works of art.

Some of my favorite quilts include a nude pregnant woman & two quilts depicting Noah & his ark. I enjoyed a few scenes with vases & another made as a memorial to the artist's parents. I also fell in love with the many landscape quilts.

The text is fascinating, discussing the history behind quiltmaking & the techniques used to make these beautiful quilts. The captions are great, explaining the methods used to make the quilt as well as the artist inspiration.

Man in the Glass Booth
Published in Textbook Binding by Harcourt (1967)
Author: Robert Shaw
Amazon base price: $10.00

Now I want to see the play!
Being a fan of Robert Shaw from his acting career, I decided to pick up The Man in the Glass Booth. Robert Shaw's story takes place twenty years after the holocaust. In this story the reader finds a successful Jewish real-estate man, Arthur Goldman, who is chauffered around by a rabbi named Charlie Cohen. Cohen serves as a type of assistant to Goldman and constantly listens to his sometimes incoherent speeches and thoughts as he babbles on through the first part of the book. A majority of this book is dialogue. (I read that there is a play based on this book. This I must see)
During the dramatic second part of the book, Arthur Goldman is discovered wearing an S.S. uniform by an unsuspecting Charlie Cohen and is soon taken to Israel with war crime charges. This leads the reader, who becomes a juror, to wonder just who Arthur Goldman really is.
During the trial, Arthur Goldman gives an intense testimony of days in the concentration camp that is guaranteed to keep the reader's attention. It is at this trial that Goldman is put in a glass booth to testify, and his testimony is both shocking and unforgettable.
This book is highly intense and worth reading. Mr. Shaw is multi-talented as an actor and author, and this book deserves much merit.

Timeless drama looks at society's own holocaust culpability.
In 1964, the Israeli intellignece group, the Mossad, kidnaps Jewish businessman, Arthur Goldman from his New York City apartment and accuses him of heinous war crimes. During the trial that follows, this man will offer a defense that will shock you, provoke you, and force you, the reader, to become the judge of him, his actions, and yourself. Originally staged in NYC in the '60's, the play was revised in New York City at the Cocteau Theater in 1998. This is a testament to the timeless nature of the drama. Historical references to the Pope's edict, concentration camps, and ethnic cleansing are repeated in recent history. Interesting metaphors are employed in the use of certain music references and references to certain paintings. The reference to Poussin's "Arcadia" bring to mind the scholarly interpretation of the painting "Here too (in paradise), is death." Arcadia is paradise neglected and fallen into ruins. The full title is "Et in Arcadia," which is actually meant as a riddle. Since there is no verb, the reader is meant to infer the meaning. So too is the main character, Arthur Goldman, a riddle, leaving the reader to guess at his true nature. Ultimately the reader is shocked by a surprise twist ending in the script, which reveals Arthur Goldman to be someone wholly different from whom he himself was pretending to be. Often performed with the audience being the jury of the trial, the audience is then forced to make a life or death decision about this man, unwittingly being lead to make the wrong conclusions. The play is a well crafted, dark drama. The gruesome talk of Nazi atrocities, with our main character admitting to shooting a person in the nape of the neck, allowed me to truly hate our main character, and yet to be also fully surprised by the climatic twist. If you're into the dark and gritty, buy this play.

One Gallant Rush: Robert Gould Shaw and His Brave Black Regiment/Movie Tie in to the Movie "Glory"
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (1990)
Author: Peter Burchard
Amazon base price: $9.95

Worth the Read!!!
Having seen the movie Glory for the first time this past weekend, I couldn't help but wonder about the 54th and its Colonel Shaw. So, when I got my hands on this book I had very high expectations. I have to say that I was very happy with the quality of this book. It has just enough sentiment for Colonel Shaw and his family, yet it also portrays the 54th as the heroes I believe they were. I would recommend this to any history buff, or to anyone who finds that they had the same thirst as I after seeing Glory on television. Great book..

Bringing a Hero to life
Matthew Broderick portrayed Robert Gould Shaw, in the movie "Glory," as shy, idealistic, tenacious. In real life he was all these things and more: more complex, more a product of his age and social class (what we today call "classism" was universal then), struggling to escape the iron grip of his abolitionist mother, wrestling with notions of race which we today would call "racism." Burchard's book is still the best for bringing him back to life: sharing army life with his friends, courting his future wife, organizing and forming the first black regiment to serve as a regiment of the line (the rest were mostly used for bushwhacking or manual labor). He surely knew before accepting the job that he would face unpopularity, uncertainty, and execution if captured. Twenty-five-year-old Robert showed awesome moral courage in taking it on, and one of the virtues of this book is that it makes Robert's record believable, first in his choice, and then in sticking with loneliness, exhaustion, discouragement, fear of death, and obstacle after obstacle, to prove that "Black Men can fight as well as White Men" and therefore can meet the coming demands of citizenship. Another virtue, for older students maybe, lies in its portrayal of the "classism" and "racism" which formed the unexamined background of most Americans in the 1860's, against which we can measure how far we've really evolved since then. All in all, an excellent book for young people in American History courses, to supplement the movie "Glory" which is often used to illustrate the Civil War and its human side.

Trust in the Balance : Building Successful Organizations on Results, Integrity, and Concern

The business case for trust
We talk a lot about "trust" in my organization, but it's always in vague terms. You get the feeling that everyone has their own definition, which they assume everyone shares. This book breaks trust down into easily understood components, makes a bottom-line business case for improving your relationships in the workplace, and then helps you do just that. It focuses on behaviors, not motivations, and therefore gives you a framework for talking about trust without accusing or blaming. It's one of the most useful business books I've read in a long time.

Clear, Interesting and Practical
Robert Bruce Shaw addresses an issue that is often either neglected or handled with bromides. To its credit, Shaw's book does not overpromise by announcing a magical ten day program to restore trust. Instead, it provides an interesting variety of examples and succinctly shows how the organizations that have succeeded in establishing high levels of trust differ from their less adept colleagues. While doing so, Shaw does not engage in preachy denunciations. The overall tone of the book emphasizes creating solutions rather than affixing blame.

In that spirit, "Trust in the Balance" contains surveys of the key factors affecting trust in the workplace; surveys that can be easily used by the reader to spot problems in his or her organization. Each chapter has meaty analysis and specific guidance on the steps that should be taken to address particular trust problems. There is also a helpful "Trust-Building Resources" section in the back of the book.

One is fortunate to glean one good idea from many business books. Shaw's book contains many excellent points and observations. Anyone seeking a no-nonsense analysis of how to handle the "trust issue" should read this book. It will be well worth your time.

Dripping Faucet As a Model Chaotic System (Science Frontier Express)

Brilliant. Real eye-opener. Should've been a classic by now.

Robert Shaw is the guy who in the early eighties (together with the likes of Crutchfield, Farmer and Packard) put information theory back into physics. He analysed the [un]predictability of dynamical systems (aka chaos) in terms of the amount of information the system can store, how fast it is losing it and replacing it with noise from the "heat bath", and information flow between parts of the system.

The book ties much of that work together and describes an experimental study of a simple dripping tap, analysed this way, as a case in point that even when we have a "theory of everything" with regards to elementary particles, we are only just starting to understand what makes even the simplest systems tick.

Phase space, Lyapunov exponents, noise, entropy, dimension of a "strange attractor", geometry from a time series, it's all coming together in this stunningly insightful voyage of discovery. The rough typewriter print, handwritten formulae and delightful cartoon illustrations convey well the sense of immediacy, of science in the making.

This is physics for the 21st century. If you're curious about nature, read it. You will never think the same again.

Definitely Helpful
I like Sade T. found this book to be helpful in understanding what my friends and family have been going through and can only hope that it will lead to more compassion as we all conitune on our journey. I have five friends who had/have cancer before they were 28. Reading Lisa's book really helped to ease the anger of seeing people being sick so young and put the focus back onto faith.

Lisa you have inspired me to give something back. I am forming a team for our local "Relay for Life 2000" team event to fight cancer. This is a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. I encourage other supporters and survivors to look for an event in their area.

We all face challenges in our lives, some more difficult than others, but with courage, hope and faith we can all become a little better because of them. Lisa proved that in her book. Read it and see what it can do to help you.

Courage and love
This is a wonderfully uplifting book on surviving a difficult battle with cancer, but it is even more the story of a family's love and support for each other through that difficult battle. Through this young woman's faith in God's healing power, and the love of her parents and husband she confronted this terrible illness with determination to live and the courage to undergo the treatment necessary to live. It is obvious, too, that her family also had to have a lot of courage and faith in this battle. Where many husbands might have become faint-hearted in this, Lisa's husband stayed at her side and had tremendous conviction that she would recover. He is to be praised for his steadfastness! With her recovery complete, what a blessing Lisa, her parents, and her husband were given with the birth of a son. This is most definitely one of the most uplifting and inspirational books I have had the pleasure of reading in a long while. I highly recommend it!

A MUST READ!!!!
This is a wonderful book. It will make you cry, but will also bring joy to your heart and a smile to your face. It makes you realize the "choices" Lisa and her family had to make to survive where very hard for her and her family. You will admire her strength, courage, and her determination to beat this. You see first hand how it effects everyone in her family. How the love of her husband, parents, family members and friends are unconditional. It shows us how the small things we all take for granted can be taken away from us in seconds and our world can be turned upside down. How Lisa never gave up and if you "believe" anything is possible.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just those dealing with cancer. There is a "lesson" for everyone to learn from Lisa's experience. It's a WONDERFUL story of love, courage, faith and determination of a young woman who is fighting to survive cancer.

The issue is not flying, we're talking COMBAT here
When I got the book I was already an able flyer in the online sim world. With help of the book I have become a good (but not the best ;-) ) virtual pilot.

I don't think it's strange that people are enthousiastic about this book. Although the reading itself is pretty dry, the message behind it is very exciting. The book starts with simple BFM (Basic Flight Maneuvers) that are the base of all maneuvering in combat. The writer then moves on to other topics like ACM (Air Combat Maneuvers), Energy management, use of missiles, use of guns, and various smaller topics.

All topics are clearly explained with schematics and descriptions of actual combats where specific tactics were used. As a World War 2 simulator fan I enjoyed the part on Gunning and energy management very much together with the ACM topic. For fans of modern warplanes the section about missiles is very interesting too.

In all topics multiple scenarios/tactics are described, with their respective answer to them. There is an answer to every tactic. This doesn't mean however that there is a step by step handbook on how to fight in the virtual (or real) sky. There is none, because all situations are different, and every pilot and plane hasd their own strong and weak points. The Writer of this book stresses this often, and makes you understand that Air Combat is truly an art which you can master with practice, dedication and help from this book...

Simply Excellent
I cannot comment on this book as a real tool, however for "serious" combat flight sim pilots it is a must. It contains highly technical information on flying ACM (technical as in have to think about, not as in mathematical). Its diagrams are excellent helping the reader to picture the maneuvers in 3 dimensional space. The book contains information from the different air-to-air weapons and their strengths and weaknesses, through to the basic building blocks of ACM (the three different forms of pursuit curve), to the ever more complex maneuvers (such as the Yo - Yo), and finally covering large scale operations like point defense. What makes the book of particular interest is the wealth of quotes from fighter pilots who have real experience. Shaw mostly talks about the pro's and con's of a specific maneuver, and then backs up this discussion with an anecdote from a pilot that describes a maneuver used in a real combat situation (from WW1 onwards) that when you an! ! alyse what the pilot did, it is the maneuver under discussion (whether the pilot realised it or not!)

As a criticism I would have preferred a slightly more detailed look at the mechanics of flight behind the ACM, but that could be because of my technical background, however apart from that I cannot praise this book enough. On the back of the cover, it has pilots also raving about the book (such as the like of Randy Cunningham), and if that doesn't sell it to you nothing will.

The book will require you to think, it is like any text book, and you can't go skipping paragraphs. However saying that, doesn't mean to say that it is not highly enjoyable, again the quotes (and the odd subtle joke) help to lighten it up if you are locked into a heavy reading session. For me personally, it should stand next to the books on tactics such as The Art of War, A Book of Five Rings, and The Military Maxims of Napoleon.

A must for fighter pilots and flight sim fans alike!
There are many kinds of people who may be interested in books about fighter combat. Two of the most prominent groups are people who fly real fighter aircraft and those who fancy themselves a fighter pilot and play flight simulation games. With the advance of computing power of today's PCs, computer flight simulators are getting closer and closer to the real thing. Not only does the flight modelling improve, but the enemy's artificial intelligence (AI) are also becoming more and more humanlike. People not satisfied with the AI are now given the opportunity to fly against their friends across the globe by the internet capable multiplayer flight simulator. These two groups of people (real pilots and sim pilots) need an expert's advice of fighter combat tactics and maneuvering. For the first group, the advice may mean the difference between a victory and death. For the second group, the consequences may not be too dire. But a sound advice will enhance their enjoyment of the flight sims they own. Mr. Shaw managed to provide just this kind of advice in his excellent book, Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering. He described various maneuvers in either defensive or offensive modes with great depth, assisted by various diagrams and pictures. The book is made even more lively by the inclusion of various quotes and wisdom from previous aces, ranging from WWI aces to Vietnam aces. The book, however, cannot be classified as easy reading. Some people might find it a tough reading at times. But those really interested in fighter combat will find this book worth reading. (I recommend having 2 model planes at hand to help you visualize the maneuvers described in the book). And those who really dig into this book will find themselves becoming a better pilot, either in real skies or in the cyber skies. My recommendation is not limited to fighter pilots and flight sim fans, though. Anybody interested in fighter combat, and want to know more about it beyond those depicted in Top Gun or other movies, will find the book satisfying. For fighter pilots and flight sim fans, though, this book is a definite must.

Blue-Eyed Child of Fortune: The Civil War Letters of Colonel Robert Gould Shaw
Published in Paperback by University of Georgia Press (1999)
Authors: Robert Gould Shaw, Russell Duncan, and William S. McFeely
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

A hero by default
Russell Duncan's compendium of letters both exalts and puzzles. The job of editing the letters and setting them in the context of war, family ties, friendships, etc. is thorough and, for the most part, makes them accessible. Let's not forget, though, that the editor omitted some letters that don't support his main thesis: that Col. Shaw was a rich young pleasure-lover who fought to get back to his privileged existence, never changing this outlook throughout the war; he "never fully understood nor dedicated himself" to the cause of Black freedom (pp.1-2). So here we are presented with a young man raised by abolitionists who went to all the hazards of preparing and leading something new, a black regiment, before dying in the middle of it, without understanding what he was about, or dedicating himself to it. It's fashionable to "debunk" the heros of yore, but even those letters we have tell us otherwise, and Duncan reverses his appraisal, back and forth, several times. We should also beware of measuring citizens of other times against a modern baseline on classism, racism, etc. Apart from these problems, found in the introduction and some footnotes, the book lets Shaw speak for himself (he does it eloquently and enjoyably) and the reader can draw his/her own conclusion on ideas, events, and character development.

best buy
it's must have book I love this book

Bringing War to Life
Robert Gould Shaw's letters home are a very realistic look of the Civil War battles by a unique individual with many perspectives. The brutality of battle along with the emotional turmoil from such a young officer bring the war to life. The authors have given us a true picture of a brave officer and the war. As you read the letters of Shaw you want to pull the blankets closer on the cold winter nights he spent in the field. You can share the suffering along with Shaw at the loss of friends. The courage and love of family and devotion of country are evident throughout his premature adult life. God bless the 54th and may Robert Gould Shaw and all that served with him and under him never be forgotten.
