America's Victory is a Victory for Shaw
Shaw has done it again! David captures the personalities of the men who designed, built and raced America. This isn't a story about the most famous Yacht race the United States ever participated in, it's a story about the human spirit, and nerves men had years ago to cross oceans and take on all comers. you think the race started in England, think again. As pilot captains these men knew how to race to earn a living; it was their way of life. Read no more of this review. Purchase the book and read a fascinating account of what became the greates sailing race of all time. You'll be surprised where America ultimately met her fate.

multicultural, beautiful illustrations,
A wonderfully illustrated, poetic exchange between mother and son tells the story of where bread comes from and how it feeds people around the world. The text moves fluidly between the story, in English, and the song, in Spanish.

A musician applauds
The graphics in this remarkable little book are cleverly designed to awaken imagination to the psychic and physical kinematics behind resultant images. Thus the authors are able to hide their calculus on a single page in the Appendix and concentrate on the visual calisthenics involved in translating quantitative data into meaning. Seating themselves comfortably in Chaos, they succeed in making conventional order appear strange and wonderful "accidents," and thus enable us to think about it without conventional straight-jackets. I can't imagine an academic study which these ideas would not enrich. A valuable introduction to the new millennium, and an indispensable "traveling companion." Gerald Massey: Chartist, Poet, Radical, and Freethinker
Published in Hardcover by Buckland Publications (1995)
Author: David Shaw
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

An excellent biography of Massey by Mr. Shaw.
Everyone who is interested in Gerald Massey and his writings must read this book!! Gerald Massey sought to inform the masses about the evolution of the human mind through varioius archetypes (a term that Mr. Massey uses well before Carl Jung) and symbols. Mr. Massey's service to mankind is as valuable as Charles Darwin's was but because his research is so revolutionary in it's effects that traditional academia still can't embrace what Mr. Massey discovered. Mr. Shaw's book helps the student of Mr. Massey's research to better understand what helped to shape Gerald Massey's views and opinions.

An overview of crafts and craft tools in Ireland
This is not a how-to book. However it does show close-ups of people in the process of doing crafts. There are also pictures of tools used in the various crafts. The photographs are mostly black and white with a small color section (125). There are 440 illustrations. There are columns of information to go with each craft. Crafts coved include textiles, stonework, woodwork, (Willow, rush and straw), lather, metalwork, pottery, glassware, candle making, fly-tying, and rural life. Makes a good coffee table book.

CREATIVE
I havent actually read the whole book but I dont even need to because the beginning was well written enough that I could easily remark on the book's diversity. That is what it is, this book is diverse and unique. Anyone can put together odd legal cases but these are put together in a way that it is almost like a story. A story of the flaws and quirks the legal systems around the world. This is a great book and I strongly recommend it.

Wonderfully down to earth observations.
I recommend this book to all persons interested in lions in the America's. It will appeal to and educate people with diverse opinions on the management of this wonderful species of cat. Mr. Shaw is not only a good biologist, he also tells it like it is, and in a well written way. I especially hope that North America's wildlife decision makers will read and heed Mr. Shaw's conclusions about lion management. This book is for the biologist, the rancher, the lion hunter, and the preservationist.

A Desparate If Misguided Quest
Two intrepid men set out to row across the Atlantic, at a time when new exploits were filling the news. The two men thought their feat, if successful, would bring them fame and fortune. Being life long watermen, they were well suited to the daunting task, and it was a near-deadly challenge! David Shaw masterfully captures the dangers of storms at sea and the physical and emotional challenges involved. The men were Norwegian immigrants to the US and were having a difficult time earning a living in the 1890s. The idea of rowing across the Atlantic seemed to be within their capabilities and might possiblty be a path toward 'real money'. Against all odds, in an open, small row-boat, they succeeded. But they never excited the imagination of the public and their gains never materialized. If you like adventures and challenge writing, or if you like sea stories, this is for you.

Real page-turner
Great read--Shaw really paints a vivid and compelling picture of what Harbo & Samuelsen must have gone through in their row across the Atlantic. My only complaint is that there were too many visits to the psychological side, which can only be pure speculation. A little bit of psych spec is good, but he went back to the well too often. Still, a very good book. Makes me feel like a wimp for cancelling my planned row across Lake Michigan!

Listen to the Sea Shanty Tribute
In 1997, my cousin Jerry Bryant wrote a wonderful sea shanty/folksong simply titled "The Ballad of Harbo and Samuelson - a tribute to these two remarkable men after Jerry had completed a lot of research (but not as much as Mr. Shaw). "We'll see you in France or we'll see you in heaven, cried Harbo and Samuelson out on the bay" goes the chorus. After hearing this song, I began looking for more on this voyage, that as one previous reviewer of this book said, "has been kept a remarkable secret". And I found it in this book. Anyone with a thirst for doing the impossible, with a taste for adventure, and an amazement at the human spirit, will enjoy this book immensely - I read it in one night.
