A great book for mystery-lovers.
This book is about how Dan, a 14-year old, lives with politics, since his dad is a senator running for president. But the fun part about this book is that the main plot is a mystery, not about politics. Dan is concerned about David Greer, a staff of Dan's dad's group. One day Dan finds out he forgot his calculator in his school locker, so to do his math homework, he goes to his father's study while his dad's meeting is going on in the living room. He can't find his dad's calculator, so he borrows the calculator left on the corner of the desk. He realizes it's Greer's calculator- he saw Greer holding it a couple of times. On the calculator, he finds some unusual symbols, on which he researches on and finds that it doesn't match any language or code. He realizes- David Greer might not be what he seems.

A great book for mystery-lovers.

Original and Fun to Read
One of the many books that pushed me into enjoying the science fiction genre. The concept for this book is incredibly original and really appealed to me when I was younger and still appeals to me many years later.

This story alternates between the point of view of the two main characters - Connie, a typical American teen and Rudy, the crown prince of a small (fictional) European country. They share a secret bond that no one else is aware of - they suffer headaches and fainting spells, but when one passes out they enter the other's mind and share what they see and hear. The 'visitor' cannot communicate with them, but the 'awake' teen is aware of the other's presence in their mind. Both guard their secret relationship fiercly until one night Rudy is kidnapped while Connie is 'with' him and she has to convince her family, and his, so that she can help to rescue him.

Connie and Rudy are both extremely well developed characters. The plot is well developed and keeps the reader involved to the very end.

Something about the idea of occasionally co-existing with someone from so far away and sharing a relationship that is so close and so private is really appealing, despite the problems it caused the main characters. Every kid wants a friend who truly understands them and this is a great manifestation of that desire.

Excellent Reading!
Connie ("I hate Constance") Hendrix and Rudolph (Rudy) - the crown prince of the ficticious Thulgaria - were born at the same moment, with brain waves that are nearly identical, though this is theoretically impossible. These similarities, besides making them the best of friends, even across vast distances, also give them the special gift of sharing their minds by telepathy. It was during one of these involuntary sharings that Connie is witness to Rudy's kidnapping and is the only one who can help him.

Although the plot is fantasy / sci-fi in nature, just about anyone will enjoy this wonderful story. In fact, I think this is probably the first fantasy book that I read. Hmm, and ten years later I'm still reading it! Definitely a must read!

Kid Friendly and Interest-holding
I read this book as the mother of an advanced reading 8 yr. old and was very pleased to see a book with action and adventure WITHOUT the sex, swearing and other things so many today think is necessary to tell a story. I'd like to write the author personally to thank her!

One of my Favorite Books!
I loved this book! I have checked it out of the library about five times in the past three months. I especially liked the characters. I liked Lorna because she liked reading, and Ameni, because he sounded like a really nice guy. I could NOT put this book down, even the tenth time I read it. I have read other books by Pamela Service, but this is definently the best one! I hope other people enjoy this book as much as I have!

Wow!!!
I read this book when I was in third grade, and it is still one of my favorite books ...Service's imagery and descriptions of Egypt are exciting and amazing. Definately a five star book!!!

Wow! It's a story and it's educational!!!! Fun to read!
This book is perfect for the Egyptian enthusist. It tells the tale of a young Egyptian prince who becomes a living god and about an archeoligist's daughter. The very idea of them meeting is absolutly amazing! When one of the two urns the prince is supposed to take care of is stolen, it's a race against time to find it! this is a great book! Highly recomended!!!!

X files in a furry black and white coat!
The space shuttle is an everyday event here in florida but for Karen and Jonathan in the midwest it is a real event. Tsynk-Yr, a alien who unfortunately crashes in their town and the first being he finds to transport into is a skunk causes real problems for them- helping him get back. This is a fun story for the elementary age and the sequel is just as good.

The Skunk Lover's Special
If you like skunks, you will love Stinker from Space. The characters were very daring and interesting. At first, it was hard for me to believe that an alien skunk could have so many adventures, but once I was finished reading the book, it seemed like there was nothing unusual at all about it. I liked the suspense and excitement throughout the whole book, because I like books that always have something happening in them. This book was well-written, and also original, because it's not every day that you read a book about a skunk from outer space and its life on Earth. It is a wonderful book and great reading experience.

Stinker from space and Return of Stinker
My son and I just finished both of the Stinker books and enjoyed them both very much. They are a fast read so if you have a child who is a reluctant reader he may like these books. There are several funny parts. We only wish there was a third so we could find out what happens to the kids when they meet the "High Gyrn of Twak".

If you give a wizard a nuclear warhead...
I don't know why these ("Winter of Magic's Return" and "Tomorrow's Magic", the review is for both) were recommended to me. There's nothing special about them; their bindings are old standard-library issue with a blurred picture and un-breakable binding (I must add something: "Tomorrow's Magic" has someone on the cover and I can't figure out whether it's Morgan or Merlin). Maybe it was because my friend knew I was digging through Arthurian legends and needed a respite from Malory and his Bible-sized work, maybe it was because we were in the area and she needed to lure me away from the brightly illustrated "The Vampire Goes to the Farm". *snicker* Whatever the reason, the heart or the shoes...

Service's series tells the tale of a post-Apocalyptic world in which everyone but the British are dead (essentially). England (and Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) have been reduced to feudal states harried by "muties" (radiation-mutated humanoids). And, at some point or another, Merlin was nuked out of his cave. Yes, that's right boys and girls, now you can destroy magic with nukes-- maybe if we bomb Iraq we'll find the Holy Grail. Anyways... thanks to some arcane plothole, Merlin has gone amnesiac on us and is fourteen (he moans about not having a beard almost as often as he turns things purple). There's some stereotypical geeks who find their inner strength/beauty travelling with him and to find King Arthur-- though why getting Arthur from Avalon is a good thing isn't explained in "Winter of Magic's Return". Morgan is portrayed as the evil, petty, destructive witch, which grates on me since I subscribe to the Bradley-esque "Good Morgan" school of thought.

These books are absurd, badly written, and poorly contrived, but I would recommend them to any would-be-author-- they'll make you feel better about yourself.

A novel take on the Arthurian legend
A sequel to "Winter of Magic's Return" this book deals with King Arthur's return to England, with the aid of a very young Merlin and his companions. Set in a nuclear winter where technology barely exists and magic is staging a comeback this is a highly amusing book. Merlin (for reasons explained in the prior book) is in his late teens and his two companions are also teens of that era. The three of them, plus Arthur are attempting to reunite the various duchis, kingdoms and principalities that England has become, against Arthur's old enemy Morgan Le Fay. While not as fascinating as the book that preceded it, this is still a servicable sequel, although i wish there were one to this as well.

Excellent sequel to WINTER OF MAGIC'S RETURN . . .
I just want to know when Ms. Service is going to come out with a third book!

This is a magical follow-up to WINTER OF MAGIC'S RETURN, and it focuses on the trio of close friends, Welly, Heather, and the youthened Merlin, now known as Earl. Five centuries after nuclear devastation, magic finally returns to the world, and King Arthur as returned to Britain in time of her need. However, as evidenced in the title, there is a new kind of magic appearing in the world -- and there may not be any room for Earl's magic now! As fun a romp as the previous book!
