This is a gold mine
I have been searching for a book like this off and on for years, but just recently came accross it. What a great collection of essays and interviews from the artists! I am a teacher/artist myself, not a researcher, and it is so wonderful to have all this information at my finger tips. I hope the editors do more work like this. If you are interested in finding out about what a contemporary artist was thinking, check this book first!

the only art book I can't live without
and not only can I not live without it, but I can feel comfortable recommending it to anyone interested in art (especially contemporary art). it is the kind of book I dream about. I want more like it. there are certain genres left out and some of the groupings are too tight, and some too loose, but the fact that the artists are the ones giving the information means that I can research them more accurately, instead of researching other peoples research. A wonderful compilation of essays and interviews.

Excellent text; focuses on artists' (not critics') ideas
I have used this text with grad. students and with advanced-level undergraduate art majors. In an era dominated by some pretty thick-headed critical writing, I value the relatively jargon-free essays by a good variety of contemporary artists. More photos, even B/W ones, would be a help however.

Comprehensive Material for any Teacher or Student of Art
The last decade of the 19th century produced revolutionary changes in architecture, painting and sculpture. These new forms shaped many features of the art of the 20th century. A general statement of the art of our times is that one by one the old criteria of what a work of art ought to be has been discarded in favor of a dynamic approach in which everything becomes possible.

The author brings the distinctive aspects of each work into focus by means of visual juxtaposition. Contrasting works gives insight into differences in approach, purpose and form. No restrictive labels are affixed to styles. Artistic development is placed within its general cultural framework, not separated from political and intellectual concerns during the period in which the artists lived and made their art.

This book with 1,600 illustrations of which 300 plates are in full color is a comprehensive and inclusive visual record of the nine individual decades from l890 - l980. The emphasis is equally divided among the three specialties - decade by decade.

The text is so interestingly informative indicating formidable research and a high degree of selectivity and sensitivity in the use of the material. Each page adds immeasurably to ones knowledge and background.

This volume would provide comprehensive material for any teacher of art as well as unlimited possibilities for a student.

Highly recommended as most definitive and detailed and marvelously illustrated - really a pleasure to peruse. I love this book a lot.

A truly wonderful artist
Barbara Chase-Riboud, one of the most amazing artists of the twentieth century, challenged many assumptions about what constitutes art, interrogating the viewer with complex and unforgettable images. Unfortunately, the male writers of this book seem unable to properly celebrate this brilliant artist; they do little other than catalogue her "influences", which one might better describe as the incredibly rich variety of artistic discourses of the past, which Chase-Riboud used subversively and excitingly. African and Egyptian influences are obvious, but she was also engaged with baroque art and Surrealsim (but *always* making it her *own*). Perhaps a better book will someday be written. This is an artist all Women should be able to study from, if only she were to become better known.

A superbly written presentation on a major sculptor's work.
Barbara Chase-Riboud is one of the most significant and original sculptors of her generation. Her dramatic explorations of literary and historical themes earned her a presence in major museums throughout American and Europe. Barbara Chase-Riboud: Sculptor is a richly illustrated presentation and overview of her 30 hear career as a sculptor and draftsman. Peter Selz and Anthony Janson are distinguished art historians who draw upon their considerable expertise to reveal how history, archaeology, spiritualism, the Baroque tradition, and Chase-Riboud's parallel career as a poet-novelist worked together to influence her work, from the Malcom X, Tantra, Zanzibar, and Cleopatra series to her recent monument Africa Rising -- the award-wining New York City landmark commemorating an African-American burial ground from the colonial slave-era. Barbara Chase-Riboud: Sculptor is a superb and informative addition to any personal, academic, or community library art history collection.

not a great overview
i was disapointed by this book and the presentation of it.

its alright
plain and simple its a nice book and i like oliveria but i really don't think it was worth the price new- and i have quite a few books on painters.

Incredible book about an incredible artist!
Just the right amount of history and ample full-color depictions of the artist's masterful use of gesture, color and raw expression. This book really showcases Oliveira's amazing versatility and his under-rated virtuosity as a painter. Oliveira's work should be included among the greats of contemporary art--and this book proves it. Wow!

too many words, not enough art
I actually intensly hate art books where the writer gets off on his own writing so much that he forgets his subject - or at least he has lost track of his subject and I definitly think that is true of this book.

Still the best thing written on Expressionist painting.
Although originally published in the 1950s and at the time the first scholarly examination in English of German Expressionist painting, Selz's book remains the best source for an understanding of the various Expressionist movements and the underlying ideas that determined the movement's aesthetic look. I sincerely hope that it is still available; it is still the best textbook to have to present Expressionism to art history students for the first time.
