Turned out to be the type of book that I love!
I bought this book at a garage sale earlier in the year and I just figured it would be a 'scary' book (I'm an avid fan of Stephen King, John Saul, etc.) As I started reading it, I began to think that I wouldn't like it....set in 2070, the main character is 'connected' to a girl from 1970 who was brutally murdered. At first, I didn't like the fact that it was set so far into the future. I figured from reading the cover that it was recent time and that 100 years before that the murder occurred. I got over that fact quickly when I began to see what was unfolding before my eyes! I couldn't put this book down! [Ask my boyfriend! I was up all night last night, under the covers with my flashlight finishing the book! :)]

I don't want to spoil this book for anyone so I won't divulge any secrets but I just want to say that this is a GREAT READ and that I will keep this in my collection for sure! And if I might make another recommendation, if you LOVE this book then you must read "The Mirror" by Marlys Millhiser! These two books are my favorites now!

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!
It is so awesome how in the future they have all that neat stuff. I really felt that I knew Jenna and Rita, and all the other characters in the book. I really loved this book. Leslie Rule Rules! She is a really great author. I read this book in 1 day! This book is so realistic, and so suspenseful. I really like the way Leslie Rule writes.

ASTOUNDING!!!!!
This book was the best book I have ever read. I would reccomend this book to people who like adventure, suspence and evryone who likes that sort of stuff. I'm looking forward to reading: KILL ME AGAIN I will be back when I finish this book. Daniell

A special remembrance
I was deeply moved and touched by this book. Miep Gies is perhaps the last person alive who knew the Frank family well during that pivotal time when the family were in hiding. As someone who has followed the Anne Frank story all my life it was something special to read this story about someone who could add more pieces to the puzzle of Anne's life.

Miep and her collaborator Alison Leslie Gold have done a wonderful job in bringing to life in clear crisp prose Miep's role in helping the family during that terrible time when barbarity had stood the world on its head. One point of interest is the inconsistency of Miep's report of events, with others, on that awful day of the family's arrest in August 1944. Chapter 15 of Miep's book should be read closely with the very precise account of that day contained in "The Diary of Anne Frank: the Critical Edition."

This is not to imply that Miep was in anyway involved in the betrayal of the family. Clearly, she wasn't. Miep's inconsistences just make her book more realistic, more readable, more earthy. Her book becomes an account not of a hero, a saint or a fighter for a cause. Miep was simply a friend who cared.

Such a strong woman...
Miep Gies should be remembered as one of the greatest women of all time. Out of sheer love, love for people, she helped in hiding the Frank family along with a few others.

The book tells the entire story of Miep Gies, from her first employment by Anne's father until the final liberation of Holland. The story is told honestly and without a feeling of ego or of her deliberately sounding like the brave woman she was. And it's told in such a way, that you feel a kind of suspense as if you didn't know of the tragedy coming.

Miep is unrelenting in her portrayal of the grimness of life during the German occupation of Holland. It was worse of all for the Jewish people, but it was also hard on the Dutch people. Reading this is an education for those of us who have no idea of how it is to live in an occupied country.

However, you feel the hope in the ending. Also, one realizes how truly important a book that Anne Frank's diary was. This is a very moving and a most important book on its own.

WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE LIKE IF WE WERE ALL LIKE MIEP?
Be prepared. This book will take your mind and body back to the war years. You will feel the suffering, not only of the Jews, but the Dutch people under German occupation.

It also serves as an independent witness to many of the events Anne described in her Diary. This was dramatized in a made for television movie about 10 years ago.

Miep and her husband Henk opened their home and hearts to Otto Frank for seven years after the war. They helped preserve his post-concentration camp sanity and gave him strength to live.

Had Miep read the Diary after Anne's capture, she states that she'd have had to burn it since it implicated people as hiders of Jews. Thankfully, Miep did not read it until years later. Even with Otto Frank's post-war encouragement, it was simply too painful for her to read. The miracle of the Diary's survival and gift to the world is due to Miep's remarkable courage and mysterious fate.

Good Stories
The math is everywhere , this is a great book to read , it's easy to follow the math he uses in order to solve others problems , they are very impresive

The best book I've ever read. You've got to read it.
If you like Math... this is the perfect book for you. The most interesting book I've ever read. When you start reading it, you just can't stop. It lets you just too eager to stop. Even people who hate Math can love this book.

Math and every day life
I've read this book in the original Portuguese many years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find an English translation in the US. It is the same gem that I remember it to be, offering the delightful adventures of a very keen and wise man, who masters not only the Art of Mathematics, but the Art of Living as well. A joy to read and highly recommended to everyone.

It appeals to everyone and it's great bedtime reading!
This isn't a "tortured tale" of anything. That's how people describe gay, bi, and transgendered people's stories when they get the message about how hard society tries to kill us, but still don't see the intense beauty of our culture and our lives.

Feinberg's autobgraphical novel does a brilliant job of showing how gender and class and sexuality and race intersect, without telling us out loud. This gives hir characters depth that most bestsellers lack. Feinberg's writing brings you right into the scene, and hir simple, honest descriptions give the story a feeling of raw truth.

It's interesting, to me, that so many lesbians (especially butch women) have embraced this book as a cult classic that really relates to their lives. At first, I thought, "they're missing the point; it's a transgendered story about how screwed-up gender is here." Then I realized that maybe it still relates to the lesbian community in terms of our gender issues; lots of female-to-male people start out identifying as lesbians.

I read this book three times: twice by myself, and once to my girlfriend as a bedtime story. It's cozy and scary in turns, but it's full of love.

The sad life of a butch
I found Stone Butch Blues to be a truly amazing novel; I too had a hard time putting it down. As a heterosexual male from the SF Bay Area, I have been exposed to homosexuals, but have never really been "behind the scenes" of the struggle for gender equality. Stone Butch Blues was a gripping and consistently sad account of the life of a tough yet sensitive "butch" and I learned quite a bit from it.
Jess definitely had to "walk a difficult path" in life as was prophecized early on by her neighbors and caretakers. The ever present emotional and physical struggles involved in Jess' life were heartbreaking and most of the time she found herself "drowning in loneliness." It is interesting to read the literary talent on display when Feinberg describes the first time Jess sees Rocco, or Jess' first dance, or when she asks Theresa to marry her. Feinberg has the ability to clearly describe these characters, create memorable scenes, and simultaneously lift your heart rate.
I thoroughly enjoyed this eye and mind opening book and in the process gained an insight that formerly didn't exist.

A must read for learning about the Human Spirit!
Author Leslie Feinberg has done a remarkable thing in the writing of Stone Butch Blues. The author has opened her soul to anyone who reads and exposed us each to our own fears of being different no matter how slight it may be. Being a gay male, reading this book was recommeded to me by a lesbian friend. At first I was reading it out of respect for my friend, but I found myself unable to put the book down. The story is endearing to anyone who desires to know more about the human spirit and the need and will to survive. I laughed, cried and saw myself in so many of the fears, questions, lonley times and good times experienced by Jess, the Stone Butch. Thank you Leslie Feinberg for the way you gave us a piece of your soul in the book and allowed us to become a little more accepting of our differences and of who we are.

Very interesting
"Leslie's Journal" is the typical story of a teenage girl whose boyfriend abuses her. Though the story has been told so many times before, this one is especially good. Leslie has to write a journal for her English class, and after a short time, she starts to tell secrets she'd never tell anyone. Secrets about her best friend, her mom, her teachers, and her boyfriend. Until her English teacher reads it, and reports it to the principal, because Leslie has written about her abusive boyfriend. Her boyfriend gets called down to the office and questioned, and later comes after Leslie. It's a very good book, but it is haunting. I strongly reccommend it.

A very real teen
This is a diary about a teenage girl named Leslie. Leslie has a difficult life and she deals with it by giving lip, doing drugs and having sex. See, Leslie is not a popular girl and when she gets the attention of Jason, the cool new transfer student, she gobbles it up. Pretty soon Leslie finds out that Jason's not all he's cracked up to be. Leslie wants out but Jason won't let go. He threatens to give Leslie's mom pictures of her on the night that he raped her if she doesn't continue having sex with him. Leslie knows what to do; she sneaks into his house, gets the pictures, and burns them. Jason threatens to kill her so Leslie flees town and goes to her dads. Leslie files a case against Jason and gets into contact with another girl he had done this too. It's a must read for all teenagers so that they can realize what happens when you make stupid desicions. A 5 star +

A great journal book
Leslie lives in Canada with a less than easy life. Her grades are down the tubes, her parents have spilt up, and she only has one friend. And to top it off everyone seems to think she's going through another "phase." When her English teacher assigns a journal writing project for class she's less than happy than to start writing in it. At first her pages are filled with insulting her teachers, classmates, and her best friend Katie's mother but when she meets Jason everything changes. Jason is an older guy that thrills her like no other. She's estatic when he asks her out on a date. But when their romance turns dangerous she find that she can't get out, can't escape what she's going through. How will she survive this abusive relationship. Leslie's journal is a great journal about living through an abusive relationship with a horrible guy. Leslie's writings are funny, emotional, and at times shocking, without a shred of self pity. If your a fan of books like Trecherous Love or Speak I reccomend this to you. It's really quite an amazing book.

A coherent, engaging, exploration of executive thinking
Leslie Kossoff has written a coherent, engaging, book that makes the topic of executive thinking of vital interest to practitioners yet accessible to the general public. Businesses, schools, health care, even government services, can be helped by leaders who understand and practice characteristics of executive thinking so carefully and brilliantly explained in this book. I have held top executive positions in my more than 40 years in public education. I have been a principal, a superintendent of schools, a college dean, and a US commissioner of elementary and secondary education in Washington, DC. During the last ten years, I served as a university professor in a doctoral program on educational leadership. I marvel at the grasp of the executive role and its challenges shown in this book. If I had come across it earlier, I would have used it in my courses as required reading.

A "must read" for anyone in a management position.
With captivating style Leslie Kossoff explains how you can create a successful organization by communicating your dreams and bringing them to life through the process of Executive Thinking. Her ideas are exciting, powerful and inspiring. Beautifully written, Executive Thinking is a "MUST read" for anyone in a management position.

A Blueprint for Success
Executive Thinking by Leslie Kossoff does something no other management book I've come across does, it not only speaks directly to the process of implementing the changes it advocates, but also the advantages of looking beyond individual functions.

I have lived and worked through MBO, Quality Circles, TQM, and more in my 20 years as a program and project manager and have yet to find a work that does more than give 'lip service' to the need for engaging all staff in the transformation of an organization. As Ms. Kossoff illustrates, it is the job of the CEO to have the dream, but if he does not trust in the talent and instincts of his entire staff, then he should hire new ones, or learn to mine the talents of the ones he has.

Business today is no longer about building a better mousetrap - using slave labor. It's about building new products and services from a 360 degree perspective. Through Executive Thinking, Ms. Kossoff provides a blueprint for building this kind of organization.

A classic well worth seeking out
This wonderful children's novel tells the story of eight year old Princess Irene. Cared for by her nurse Lootie, she lives in a mountain farmhouse while her father rules over the region from a mountain top castle. The local folk work as miners but are beset by the Goblins who inhabit the underground. Irene is saved from the Goblins by Curdie, a thirteen year old miner, and she in turn saves him. The whole thing is told in a pleasant conversational style and is filled with humor, word games, magic, derring-do, and pure wonderment.

George MacDonald, a Congregational minister turned novelist, who seems nearly forgotten now, was one of the seminal figures in the development of Fantasy. His influence on other Fantasy authors is obvious, he was a childhood favorite of JRR Tolkein, who especially liked this book, and C.S. Lewis named him one of his favorite authors. His own stories draw on many of the themes and characters of classical European fairy tales. But where they were often merely horrific and meaningless, MacDonald adds a layer of Christian allegory. Thus, Irene and Curdie are eventually saved by a thread so slender that you can't even see it, but which leads them back to safety, teaching Curdie that you sometimes have to believe in things that you can't see.

The book would be interesting simply as a touchstone of modern fiction, but it stands up well on its own and will delight adults and children alike.

GRADE: A

the first of two terrific stories for young and old
whenever I find a used copy of this or MacDonald's "The Princess and Curdie" I buy it and give it away. Both books are full of religious symbolism if you think about it, and old other-worldness if you don't. "The Princess and the Goblin" can be enjoyed by early elementary school children, while the language of "The Princess and Curdie" is more challenging and suited for 5th grade and up, though anything is possible with a bit of extra effort. Worth trying. George MacDonald (deceased) has a loyal following as do, of course, Tolkien and C.S.Lewis who were his friends. These are lovely books to read aloud.

A Classic
I cant believe I haven't read this untill now, its such a great book! A princess lives in a castle all her life, never knowing of the great dangers that go on in the mountain. One day(being about 7 years old) she finds a stairway in her house that she has never seen and it leads her to her great, great grandmother. After she meets her grandmother she is shown the dangers of the goblins and meets a boy named Curdie who mines in the mountain with his father. Throughout the book Curdie and the princess have many encounters with the goblins. This is a great book I highly recommend it for readers of all ages.

Antiques Freaks Unite!
So you've always been that one freak in a bunch? The one who continually drives their friends off the deep end because of your knee-bending worship to antique toys, stoneware or blanket chests? Well if this is you, take heart! Now, with this book, the Keno twins have finally brought the enthralling world of Americana to a popular audience. They are sure to convert a whole new generation of antiquing freaks with their pulse-quickening stories of adventuring over land and across seas for that perfect piece of American furniture history. No longer will you feel a fool for dragging some uninterested friend or family member to a local museum or flea market only to hear them complain of the heat. Soon they will be joining you with entusiasm, as the dusty world of antiques is bound to take on a new brand of chic with the success of Hidden Treasures. If you're a seasoned professional with hunting stories of your own, you'll feel right at home with the descriptive images of the chase. But beginners are not excluded either, as each chapter is interwoven with priceless tips of the trade and heartening twists that make even a baffled amateur feel empowered to take up the hobby and run with it. Kudos to the Kenos!!!

A highly educational, fun, and interesting book!
Antiques Roadshow twins Leigh Keno and Leslie Keno take readers on a fascinating journey through their early childhood and adult life of antique collecting. From digging up old bottles in a creek and collecting rare bits of stoneware to the vast international world of high stakes antique collecting-this book will have you enthralled for hours-even if you don't care for smelly old furniture! By the time one is half way through their book one can feel the excitement starting to catch on. Who knows? Someone who reads this book might be motivated enough to become the next Sotheby's or Christie's president!

For The Love of Old American Things
"Hidden Treasures" is a friend for anyone whose pulse has ever reacted to the sight of a grand piece of antique furniture. For those who have ever become breathless or teary-eyed over fruniture, it should be required reading. The most appreciated surprise of "Hidden Treasures" is how generous the Kenos are with their knowledge -- reading this book is almost like being enrolled in an advanced course in American furniture complete with field trips and historic background. There's even a textbook like glossary for quick reference to terms.

The world of the Keno brothers is one of extreme privilege and yet, as we travel from their modest and nurturing childhood to the decisive playgrounds of the wealthy -- Sotheby's, Christie's, and the Winter Antiques Show -- we feel welcome, if not at home. That is, perhaps, the most endearing charm of these identical gentlemen -- they are seemly unaffected by their palacial world -- driven primarily by their passion for historic masterpieces of American furniture and a childlike enthusiasm for the hunt. The honesty and power of their passion ignites every page of their book as it does everyday of their lives. And, it is so infectious that many will be inspired to begin plotting their first five, six, seven, or eight-figure purchase of Americana.

My only slight disappointment was with some of the writing. The masterful talent of Thatcher Freund, author of "Objects of Desire" could have been put to good use on this project. I only wish he would have been part of the team. Then, the book would have been perfect -- an American Masterpiece.

Fantastic for someone first trying to make their own books.
What I liked best about this book was the variety of projects that are detailed, step by step, with clear, easy to understand instructions. I would higlhy recommend this book to someone just trying book making for the first time.

Lots of wonderful colour photographs and examples of what can be done.

A wonderful how-to book that offers clear, easy instructions
Whether you're a novice book maker or advanced book artist, be prepared to be inspired by the color photos and easy-to-understand projects found within Cover to Cover. I teach bookmaking workshops and recommend this title to all my students. You won't need exotic or hard-to-find materials to complete the wonderful books. My favorite: the book bound with bamboo skewers!

A good start for the beginner; inspiration for the skilled
Shereen LaPlantz approaches the subject of making books with an artistic awareness. She provides a clear introduction to the parts of a book, materials, tools, and basic techniques. She then provides step-by-step instructions on how to make each type, from the simple pamphlet to the highly unusual bindings. The instructions are easy to follow and are accompanied by clear illustrations.

The most remarkable aspect of this book is its pages filled with beautiful color photographs of books made by the author and several artists. I bought this text because I was interested in making a simple binding for a family history book, but after reading Cover to Cover, I have a new perspective on bookmaking - I now see it as a form of art with a whole range of possibilities. And it's an art which is accessable to all.

Brings Back Memories
A random search on 'Tintin' on Amazon.com brought back powerful memories of my happy youth, when my brother and I would save up our pocket money every month to buy used copies from local booksellers in the musty streets of Delhi. The books would be marked with pen and sundry stains, but, to us, they were a reminder of what lay just beyond our reach.

We would be fascinated by Tintin's travels through the most exotic places in the world (and beyond!). What colorful characters Haddock and Calculus are! For some reason, King Ottokar's Sceptre was always my favorite one, but almost all comics in this series are classics.

I would especially urge any one with young children to buy every Tintin comic book in existence, but, really, these comics will please all age groups.

A must-read for Tintin's fans!!!!!!
My brother and I are MAGOR Tintin fans, and have both read all the books. These three tales are my alltime faves. I like the part in the Land of Black Gold when Thompson with a P as in "psychology" falls asleep and drives the Jeep into the Arabien city! The moon adventures are just awesome. Great, exciting book.

Great
I loved Tintin books when I was a kid, and I love them now at age 37. I know I'm not alone, because a Tintin store in San Francisco sells Tintin coffee cups and ties and key chains (grown-up's items!) I myself have a Tintin tie and key chain! THE LAND OF BLACK GOLD is my favorite Tintin book. It has all the best characters, humor, and an intriguing plot. (That's why adults can like them, because many of the books have reasonably sophisticated James-Bond type plots.) Tintin forever!
