Other People's Houses
After I saw Ms. Segal interviewed in the film, "Into the Arms of Strangers", I knew I had to read this book. She is incredibly engaging and candid. I found myself reading this book while attempting other chores, it gripped me so much. One gets the feel of sitting down in a parlor with her and sipping coffee (or English tea) as she unfolds a captivating story of escape, disenchantment, survival and hope. The only thing better for me would have been actually meeting her in person. I highly recommend this book. I tell everyone I know to read it.

Brilliant Memoir
I have read so many holocaust memoirs that when I was given this book I wasn't that excited to read it. I was mistaken: no matter how much you have read on this subject, there's no substitute for reading Lore Segal. As a child she's sent on a kindertransport to England, and this memoir chronicles her youth there--as a guest in "other people's houses,"--as well as her advenutres (along with the rest of her refugee family) in the Dominican Republic, and, finally, New York--where she is at last able to establish her own home.

Her voice is so strong, smart, and sophisticated that even when the story is at its saddest you'll find her an irresitable narrator.

I not only loved reading this book, I learned from it.

The Story of Mrs. Lovewright and Purrless Her Cat
Lore Segal and Paul Zelinsky have created a timeless, fine, humorous work that is delightful for both adults and children. Mrs. Lovewright is among the funniest and most beautifully rendered characters I've found in children's literature.

I give this book the high praise I reserve for such children's stories as Grasshopper on the Road, Caleb and Kate, and Mr. Dog.

Last year, I read Mrs. Lovewright over public radio and received numerous calls from adults who wanted to find a copy of the story for themselves. It's sad that such a hilarious, heartwrench and warmer has been lost to the black hole called "out of print."

This is a great book!
I hope it will be reprinted, I lent our copy out and didn't get it back. This is the only children's book I have saved for years. The humor is excellent - funny for adults as well as children.

Great Stories and Great Pictures
My mom & step dad bought me this while on their honeymoon in Carmel in 1978 (I was 8 at the time). I loved it so much that it must be handled with care these days. Grimms fairy tales aren't necessarily for everyone. Several are very dark, but I truly enjoyed them. And who can beat Maurice Sendak as an illustrator???

Lost in translation no longer
After hearing Sendak speak of the tragic fate that has befallen the fairy tale, I immediately went online in search of the Juniper Tree collection, a seventies-era translation of Grimm's fairy tales that professed to be true to the originals.

According to Sendak, modern adaptations of fairy tales lack the vigor and violence of the originals, which themselves were adaptation of the spoken-word. Call it Disney-fication, but new translations seemed to candy-coat old tales into generic rubbish. Sendak said that he took on this commission in order to rejuvenate the fairy-tale genre. And I can only find success in the venture. The new translation adds spice to fairy tales that I have heard countless times, in addition to adding many more obscure fairy tales to a reader's collection. And Sendak's beautiful black and white illustrations certainly don't hurt the package. His characteristic drawings add life and excitement to the written word.

Definitely get this copy instead of any cheesy new version of a fairy tale. It's not as violent/different from normal fairy tale editions as I expected, but the change is significant enought to have warranted this translation. And sure, there isn't a Sendak illustration on every page, but kids need something to look forward to in a book, don't they?

Beloved Childhood Book
As a child I found this book at a garage sale. It instantly became one of my most treasured books - that was over 20 years ago. It has some of the most interesting Fairy Tales, many have a slightly "different twist" than your typical tales (some outright silly while others dark and bit disturbing). Most of the stories are 3 to 5 pages long and are very quick reading, and the sketched illustrations are beautifully detailed. Excellent stories for children and adults alike. With my current copy falling apart - I was happy to see the book has been re-issued!

Universal Appeal
My children loved all the stories, while my own favorite is clearly the first one, "Mitzi Takes a Taxi". The stories are well structured, leading to conclusions that are logical yet surprising.
We are American expats, assigned to Tokyo for a few years. Because of the vocabulary, structure and enjoyable stories, this book is also well-liked by Japanese moms that want to read books in English to their children.

Tell Me a Mitzi
I read this book to both my children when they were little, then to my grandson, and send it as a gift to the older child of the family when a younger child is born. I love this book as did my children and grandson. In fact I have to order a new one, I have kept the first book I read to my daughter, who is not 27 and the mother of my grandchild. The book is fun to read and the pictures are interesting and fun as well.

It Brings Me Back!
I recently came across Tell Me A Mitzi in a story book called You Read to me & I'll Read to You. Looking at the illustrations brought me back to my childhood! It was an amazing feeling, I had forgotten all about Mitzi's "trip" in a taxi. I loved Tell Me A Mitzi as a young girl and I love it now as a mom of 3 girls.
