The Hormone Solution: Stay Younger Longer With Natural ....
I found this book to be well organized and easy to read and understand. There is a wealth of information about the role of hormones in the body, and the consequences of not having enough as you age. I enjoyed the detailed explanation of the function of each hormone. At the end of each section, Dr. Hertoghe adds a one page table of a condensed version of his recommendations for easy reference. That makes the book very user friendly. The book has information that is revelant to older and middle aged people, as well as people in their twenties. I thought I could share this book with my sister, but we both like it so much as a reference that we had to buy another one. Thanks to Dr. Hertoghe for shedding light on so many hormonal changes associated with getting older. Can't live without it anymore!

The best Zone book to read
This is Barry Sears' most technical book so far about the biological principles behind his Zone diet.

He describes biological markers of aging and mechanisms of aging. He also gives a short course in hormones, which are strongly involved in aging.

Sears explains his anti-aging pyramid, which consists of meditation, moderate exercise and his Zone diet. Unlike the US Department of Agriculture food pyramid, which put bread, grains and starches at the bottom, to be eaten in big amounts, Sears' pyramid puts these at the top, to be eaten very sparingly, to reduce insulin secretion.

Insulin is so important to his Zone diet that he devotes an entire chapter to its effects on the body. He also devotes a chapter to cortisol, a hormone important in stress reactions. Plus, he has a chapter about eicosanoids, which are hormones that are very important in coordinating important body functions.

Insulin strongly affects the output and mix of eicosanoids. Since maintaining the correct amount of insulin in one's body is fundamental to his Zone diet, Sears gives a list of 14 different signs that one has the right amount and kind of eicosanoids active in one's body.

These signs consist of such varied things as hair strength and texture, appetite for carbohydrates, length of time of appetite suppression between meals, sleeping time and grogginess on awakening.

If all of these 14 different signs have the right status, it's an indication that one has had the right amount of insulin in one's body recently.

Sears ranges widely enough to get into trouble. For example, he recommends Coleus forskohli as an anti-cancer agent. Actually, it's catnip for some kinds of cancer.

Aging as a chemical engineering problem.
As a zoner for nearly 2 years, I can personally attest to Dr. Sears scientific evaluation of America's high carbohydrate - low fat diets, and the current government dietary pyramid scheme. His latest book describes the hormone system and how sustained high insulin levels accelerate aging. This book explains in great detail how Dr. Sears, through the empirical results of his own studies and research of others, formulated the "Zone Diet". This book should give those who believe in the current wisdom of high carbohydrate - low fat diets pause. The book is not an easy read, but given the complexity of his subject I don't see how it could be more simply written. Just do like I did; read it twice.

Technical, but worth the effort
I read Mastering The Zone and have been in the zone for about two months. The Anti-Aging Zone is more technical but provides more information on vitamins and ways to verify that you are in the zone. I was especially interested in the Harvard Medical study on heart attacks and the relationship of the Triglyceride/HDL cholesterol ratio. A ratio over 4 is bad news. Before starting the zone diet, my ratio was 7.6. Now, just over two months later, its below three. The goal is to have a ratio below 2. Overall, the book re-enforces the benefits of the zone diet. But if a person is just starting this diet, then I suggest Mastering The Zone or Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes as better "How To" books.

This one is worth it-a good tool in the battle of dieting!
While some say this is just a copy of the zone, I think it is more well written than the zone...the information can be presented a number of ways & this one is the first diet book I feel like I can really learn from & use. It is true she hawks her own stores products, but any savvy consumer can make their own choices. Besides, the breakfast bars she mentions can be bought just about anywhere these days. The points she makes about thyroid, & other possible reasons you may not be able to lose weight yet are good ones. The recipes are very easy & very tasty. All around, a very good tool to get you going on a real plan to change the way you eat so you can lose weight for good. At Amazons paperback price, what have you got to lose, really? Go for it!!

Bless you, Carol!
I went on this program, lost 18 pounds, and have kept them off ever since. The program is simple, makes sense, is nutritious and safe, and I feel great. The nutritional supplements are readily available, and somehow doing Carol's program makes me feel like I'm finely on a sane eating diet. Even my doctor is amazed at how healthy this is, and how much it's helped me. I've done many of the recipes, and have liked them so far. And I have to say that I've bought copies for a friend and a family member, and they both are losing weight, too. All in all, I'm glad I finally found a book that explains -- in easy to understand language -- a nutritious and simple program that WORKS!

An author who relates on a simple and understanding level.
I don't have a weight problem but my husband does. I have started making the recipes in the book and my husband has lost 11lbs in 3 weeks. He has asked me where I got the new recipes he is eating and I just told him that I picked up a cookbook at the store. The ironic way that I found out he has lost weight is that he mentioned that he needed a new belt and I said why. He said that he must have lost some weight. My husband is retired so I make all of his meals. The only meal I cannot give him is the breakfast drink because he is one of those men who cannot think about protein drinks in the morning. This has been the only diet book that I can say, where the meals are just like family cooking. They taste great and they are easy to make. I am surprised about the success of this program and that my husband feels great and does'nt know that he is on a diet. I look forward to the mentioned cookbook sequel. Thank you for this opportunity to share. Please thank the author.

good
Dr. Sears reads the books, its a little boring to listen to, but he's reading the zone books for you, just the same as the book! Zone diet is explained clearly - healthy eating, why its good, how to follow it - specific combinations of foods to help health and weightloss. Lots of good fruits and vegetables, protien to fit your size and activity level and some fat at each meal. Low-glycemic recommended foods are best.

Only if you want to achieve near-superhuman health.
Buy this if you want to (in this order!): * Develop a permanent, healthy relationship with food and with your body. * Always have energy for exercise or simply living your life. * Virtually eliminate nasty body odors and bad breath. * Lose fat and gain muscle simultaneously. * Achieve nearly-superhuman health. * Become smug. * Avoid many chronic diseases.

No, Barry Sears isn't a wonderful speaker. But the information on these tapes will change your life if you do everything he says. It's *not* hard, people.

If you are frustrated with fad diets, don't worry: This isn't a fad, and it's not really a "diet." Diets are temporary; the Zone system is a nutritional program founded on moderation and legitimate nutritional principles. I became an instant evangelist for the Zone, and I'm 99% certain I'll live with it for the rest of my life.

By the way, the Zone is not anything at all like the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet is a dangerous fad diet that has many horrifying side-effects, like gaining an astronomical amount of fat after you quit and return to your "normal" eating patterns. I know this from first-hand, precision observations. However, you can follow the Zone your whole life and get excellent results with many positive side-effects.

Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and buy this.

This plan is NOT for everyone
...

For one, it's very similar to the Atkins diet in that it is very low carb and high protein. For a week this might give you a jump start but for the long haul it's far from ideal. For another, the protein sources are quite limited and the recipes and meal plans are VERY RIGID. ...

The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of just 1 star is that there IS some valuable information here. Adding flax and borage oil to your diet is a very healthy choice. Omega-3 oils and fatty acids are proven to aid in weight loss. Cranberry juice mixed with water (unsweetened, as she said) and lemon juice are both good for your kidneys and liver which aids fat loss.

The author is on the right track in some places, but I am extremely disappointed that she went for the gimmicky ultra-strict quick fix low-carb idea rather than being a bit more flexible and health-conscious.

In it's rigidity, it is not going to be as feasible in the long term for most people as it sets people up for failure either due to the complexity or the costs. It would be especially hard for families with children, as it would mean two separate plans for each and every meal. And if you're strapped for time or on a budget, forget it. The reviewer who said that this is like a full-time job is absolutely right. That is NOT necessary for effective weight loss!

A better idea would have been to emphasize the omission of unhealthy foods (caffeine, white sugars, white flours, excessive dairy, pasta, over-processed foods) and the inclusion of healthy foods (omega-rich healthy fats and oils, whole grains such as organic whole wheat, brown rice & quinoa, lots of low-glycemic fruits, plenty of vegetables). Teaching better overall health habits and food choices will help you lose weight and keep it off a lot more easily in the long run...

Buy the Book, Follow the Program....it works
Maybe you're gaining weight because you're allergic to some of the foods you eat or maybe because your digestive track is clogged and you keep adding things like bread and sweets on top of it. The Fat Flush Plan cleanses out your liver and allows for a smooth flow of food. You'll be able to have bread and milk again, but during the plan you're letting your body digest all the bread, sweets and milk you've had in the past. It's tough, but it works.

BUT, the food that she wants everyone to buy can get costly, hard to find and I don't really eat some of the stuff that she recommended. For example she says to try and get fresh veggies and organic fruit. But, I'm a poor college student, so I just made my own adjustments. I alternate between eggs and protein shakes in the morning for breakfast. I bake chicken the night before and I buy the pre-made salad at the grocery store and have a chicken salad everday for lunch (it's only for two weeks) and for dinner I just steam some frozen veggies that I got from the grocery store freezer at about $1.00 per bag and bake some kind of meat. And I have fruit for snacks, even grapes and bananas which I don't think she recommends. I'm almost a vegetarian so I don't eat alot of meat, my meals consist of about 75% veggies. Eating too much meat can make a person constipated anyway. Also, the long life cocktail in the morning always makes me want to gag.So, I just take psyllium pills or I just mix the powder in some water. It tastes sooooo much better and it's soooo much easier to swallow.

Allergy Flush Plan, not just for Fat!
I bought this book on a whim that it might help me lose weight. I read all the stuff about cleansing your liver (some I understood, some was a little over my head but I got the jist). I reviewed the menus and recipes and decided it might work for me. I wanted to lose around 35 pounds. I must say the first week was tough and the sugar blues got to me but I stuck to it. I'm now 2+ months into the program and I'll tell you what I've discovered...I have horrible food allergies to all the white stuff (wheat and milk in particular). I never knew just how bad those allegies were until I tried to add them back into my diet in Phase II and III. Wow! It told me more than I ever got from all the allergy testing I've had. It was real! I have never been so allergy-free in my life than I am now on the Fat Flush Plan. Little did I realize just how much those allergies were bringing me down and my weight up. I would much rather avoid these foods than take weekly shots to be able to eat them! I still have about 10 pounds to go on my weight loss goal. Allergy sufferers get on board! This plan will really help you out of your allergy miseries! There are many alternative foods out there you can buy at the local grocery store if you just have to have bread and ice cream!

In the Zone is the Place to Be
A friend recommended this book to me because of the great results he'd had following it. I bicycle quite a bit, and had been on a very high complex carb, very low fat, protein--what's that? diet for several years. My "healthy" diet gave me low cholesterol (154), but I had extremely high triglycerides (382), low HDL (30), low LDL (48). In short, this shows impending heart disease. Doctor's advice? Exercise. Well, I was already doing that. I cut out even more fat. I was constantly hungry, had headaches, and rarely felt terribly well.

After following the Zone diet for just two days, I felt great and was never hungry, in fact had trouble eating all the food sometimes. I've never felt better in my life. I've been on it almost two weeks now, and have lost over 3 pounds, all from my waist, that I'd never been able to lose before no matter how much I biked. I have far more energy for bicycling than I previously had, and my physical condition has greatly improved. I require less sleep and am less tired than I was before. I know my next blood test will be next to perfect. I'm on the Zone for life. It's simple, the basic principles to follow are summarized in five sentences. I've never really "dieted" before, just modified my food choices and behavior. Unfortunately, I'd been doing it all wrong. Now I know what's right, thankfully not too late.

An easy-to-follow eating plan that actually works!
In his second book about The Zone Diet, Barry Sears emphasizes what we know from personal experience -- that eating bread, pasta, bagels and other grains makes us fat, and that our carbohydrates should come primarily from fruits and vegetables. He explains why eating the correct ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fat is the secret to controlling insulin levels and thus, bodyfat. Unlike others who tell us that we already eat enough protein or that everyone should eat 'X' grams of protein a day, Sears tells us how to compute our own daily protein requirements based on our individual lean body mass and activity level. This highly readable, convincing book provides sample menus and easy ways to follow the eating plan. The Zone Diet allows us to eat all that delicious fruit and even moderate amounts of peanuts, macademia nuts and other fats!

I don't understand why people find this hard to follow?
I bought Mastering the Zone and never read Entering the Zone. I found it completely easy to read and user friendly. I read it one Friday night and applied it the next day. It's super simple. It explains blocks and in the back of the book, shows the quantity you can have of certain foods per block. It's even talks about adjusting the diet to meet your personal requirements.

Here's my sample menu. This is for 13 blocks of protein:

Breakfast:
Smoothie
1 c. yogurt
1 c. milk
1 c. strawberries
1 c. raspberries
2 envelopes of splenda
1 oz low fat cheese
12 almonds or 24 peanuts

Lunch:
4 oz Chicken
4 c. salad
1 T. ranch
3 c. mushrooms
1/2 c. grapes
1/2 c. pineapple

Snack
1oz cheese
1/2 apple
3 olives

Dinner
5oz fish
2 c. green beans
2 c. salad
1 T. ranch
1/2 apple
1 c. strawberries

Snack:
1oz beef
1/2 c. grapes
3 almonds

Not too shabby, huh? The above is only 1600 calories, which is what my hubby is on. I'm on 9 blocks, which is 1000 calories and still TONS of food, since I have a lot to lose and want to do it quicker.

If you want to feel GREAT, eat great and look great, I highly recommend this book and this diet as your lifetime way of eating.

Expensive Eating Habits
I read Dr.Sears book because I need to live a healthier lifestyle. The book is very easy to read. I decided to follow the Zone Diet. Using the shopping list, and buying most of the item listed, I spent $161.00 for a weeks worth of meals (basically for one person). at the rate I am going I may end up healthier, but a lot poorer.

The Basic Zone Diet book
This book is all you really need to try Barry Sears' Zone Diet. If you want all the details, see his other books (I've read two of them), but this one explains the diet in a straight-forward way. The diet is moderate, not an extreme, hard-to-follow fad diet (despite the look of the cover of the book). It's fairly easy to follow; I've experienced less hunger with this plan than other low-carb plans, and don't spend my whole day thinking about food. But as Dr. Sears says, it isn't really a high-protein, low-carb diet. It simply keeps carbs, fat and protein in balance, resulting in better health and the loss of excess pounds. The only reason I don't give this book five stars is that it contains several typos and small errors (corrected on Dr. Sears' website, www.drsears.com --it should have been proofread a few more times before going to press!

Lost 11 pounds in a month on the Zone without starving!
In brief: the Zone diet works. Please note:

1) This is *not* a crash diet.

2) This is *not* a starvation diet.

3) You get to eat *normal* food. On the down side, you *do* have to give up certain dishes (pasta, rice, and breads, for example)... but on the other hand you get to eat plenty of chicken, beef, turkey, cheese, eggs, bacon, tuna, salmon, cod, as well as plenty of vegetables and fruits. (And for you veggies out there, you can do the Zone diet, too. Just substitute soy protein for the meats and fishes, and take your vitamins, and you're in the club!)

4) The Zone diet is easy to follow. Sears' book is filled with sample recipes for meals, but really, you don't need to follow them. Just flip to the end of the book where he lists all the recommended Zone foods and combine them to make up your own recipes.

Here's how the diet works. There are three categories of foods that you need to eat at every meal: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats (all listed in the back of the book). If you're a man, pick 4 choices (called "blocks") from each category. If you're a woman, pick 3 choices (or "blocks") from each category. Then combine them anyway you choose.

Example: guys, for breakfast, three strips of turkey bacon equals 1 protein block. One egg also equals 1 protein block. So have two eggs for breakfast with three strips of turkey bacon and that's 3 blocks right there. Now add one ounce of low fat cheese (1 protein block) and you've met your protein requirement for that meal.

Now add an apple (2 carbo blocks) and an orange (2 carbo blocks) to your bacon and eggs breakfast and you've met your carbo requirement for that meal.

For fats, just add a 1 1/3 teaspoon of sesame oil to your eggs while you're cooking them, and now you've got 4 fat blocks.

And that's it. You're in the Zone!

You can prepare all your meals that way. Don't feel you have to follow Sears' recipes to the letter and end up scouring your supermarket for obscure items like cilantro, dried tarragon, and shallots (say what?). So long as you only eat what's in the food lists and don't eat the *bad* foods, you'll do fine.

5) Be sure to drink plenty of water. This is crucial for the diet to succeed. If you need a break from tap water (or Evian, for that matter), you can have decaf. Just don't add more than a teaspoon of sugar to your decaf, or better yet use a substitute. Sugars are the one of the *bad* carbo blocks that you need to keep to a minimum.

Also, though it doesn't say so in the book, you are allowed to *occasionally* have a diet drink like Coke or Pepsi so long as it's sugar *and* caffeine free. (I got this last part from Sears' web site, in case you're wondering.)

So while decaf and the occasional diet drink are OK, you should still make sure that most of your liquid intake comes from water. And lots of it.

5) Once you're on the diet, there *will* be a few times each day where you're feeling a little hungry. But a little hungry is one thing and famished is something else... and I've said, on the Zone diet, you don't walk around feeling like you're starving.

For me, the rumble-in-my-tummy feeling usually kicks in about an hour before each meal. If lunch is at 12:00 P.M., my stomach will start grumbling around 11:00 A.M. Late afternoon, my stomach will start grumbling again, but the Zone diet allows me one late afternoon snack each day, so that tides me over till dinnertime. Then, before bedtime, my stomach grumbles one last time, but since the diet also allows me one light bedtime snack (say, a small piece of fruit and a slice of cheese), that tides me over until the next morning.

But for the most part, I don't walk around feeling hungry. In fact, after my first few days on the diet I already lost my cravings for fatty foods like potato chips and pretzels. So since I don't miss what I can't eat, that's what keeps me "in the Zone".

Bottom line: the Zone diet is highly recommended to anyone interested in losing a few pounds without going stark-raving nuts. At the same time, it's balanced enough that you can remain on it painlessly even after you've reached your "ideal weight". How many other diets can claim that? I plan to stay on it until I've lost at least another ten pounds. After that, who knows?

A little too scientific for the average reader
The great thing about the Zone is that you CAN have carbs, just as long as you balance them with protein and fat. Everything in the 40-30-30 ratio. Every meal, every snack. Sounds simple enough. I read the book and found it all very informative. They discuss insulin levels and balancing your hormones. A lot if it was geared toward physical performance, like that of Olympic swimmers who got better times when they were "in the Zone." I didn't feel like the book was confusing. But putting it all together and actually doing the diet was another story. It requires a lot of planning and seems to require a lot of math. The ratio business sounds easy, but trying to use it when eating an actual meal and not just a cup of this and 3 ounces of that is very difficult. If you're truly committed to the principles and theories presented here, then you can make it work, lose weight, and look great. But I think that the average reader will get too frustrated to really make a go of the Zone.

Excellent, but many questions
I found the book excellent because it talks about reality.. that taking carbohydrates would just make you fat, and that the reason why people don't have any energy is because they aren't eating fats to give them that energy. My fiancee and I are trying it out(I'm trying to gain, and she's trying to lose weight), and have found that our energy has never been better.

Unlike what another person has said, I never found this book confusing at all, whereas my fiancee did. The reasoning behind the confusion, in my opinion, is because all of these magazines talking about some new "diet" using pastas and rice, and Boost with their "energy drink". For too long, we have been inundated with false information most likely from some company who's told the government that this is the right way to eat and lose weight. Thank goodness for this book. People can finally eat properly, and all based on scientific research. As well, I've also seen the ideas in real magazines such as "Muscle Media" and "Oxygen".

Now for the "but". I did not agree with the use of aspirin to lower cholesterol. When I got to that part, I read a few pages, and almost tore it out of the book. Why would I take such a drug to lower my cholesterol? What about the chances of getting addicted? With all the illegal drug addicts dying, there is never any mention of aspirin and tylenol addicts.

Finally, this book failed to mention that the best way to lose fat and increase metabolism, is to lift weights. Muscle is the best fat burner that nature has given us, and yet very few mention that.

Beware the previous comments
Reading some of the bad reviews on this book just makes you sit back and laugh. It's obvious from their bitter wording that they are really saying "I'm too lazy and don't feel like working to get thin again. I'd rather blame it on other people than myself."

Do you want real proof? Rush Limbaugh. This was the book that helped him slim down. I suggest you search the web and look at some before and after photos of him... Quite amazing.

If you're willing to actually work at becoming thin, and not complain about it, this book will help. If you're lazy, and think there is a miracle solution for weight loss that doesn't require work on some level, well... sorry. Stop blaming other people, this book or anything else. If you want to get thin, take charge of your life and read this book and follow it! It obviously does work! There is too much proof to back it up.

Have fun.

A must read
The Jungle is not only an excellent work of fiction, but also a historical monument. Sinclair uses graphic and depicting methods to grasp his reader and make them think about the hardships his fictional characters are undergoing. I found that his using of a fictional family to accurately show the corrupt meat industry and working class was an excellent way to appeal to readers of all ages. While his book started out on solid ground as it progressed I felt that it was starting to sink, and by the end it was well past sunk. I think that if Sinclair hadn't tried to switch to socialism, which he had so much opposed in the previous pages of his book, his novel would have been much better. However, I don't think that Sinclair's intention was to write an excellent novel and a superb ending, but simply to write a novel that got a point across. That point being that change was necessary, and I think he successfully got that point across. Overall I felt that Sinclair did a very good job of depicting the hardships of his time, and I'd recommend to everyone to go out and read his book; if not for the historical value, just for the fact of reading something different and unique.

Sinclair's sensational The Jungle is unforgetable.
The Jungle is a hearbreaking story of an immigrant family's struggle to survive in America. The family of Jurgis and Ona came from Lithuina in hopes of a better life. However, after months in America, their faith in America was torn to little pieces. Ona and Jurgis's lives as a married couple was nothing like expected. The pressure of work, poverty, and illness stilfled their spirits. This book also accurately revealed a sound historical document of the life and suffering of factory workers during the early years of this century. Antanas had to shovel the residues of chemically treated meat onto a truck headed for the cannery. Jurgis saw pregnant cows butchered and their unborn calves illegally mixed with other carcasses. Jurgis began to see how the packer operate. They sold spoiled or adulterated meat without qualms. Their workers were exposed to awful occupational diseases, yet the packers took no steps to protect the employees. They stole water from the city and polluted Chicago, and the city government turned their heads. After the death of Antanas, Ona, his two sons, and the lost of the house the family had struggled so hard to keep, Jurgis entered the world of crimes. He learned how Chicago's criminal underworld helped to corrupt the city's government.

A Great History Fiction
Upton Sinclair's the Jungle is a distressing and touching story of the immigrant life in America during the early years of this century. Jurgis, Ona, and their families came to America from Lithuania to live a better life. After some time, reality set it. Their faith in America remained though. America was not what they had expected, especially once Ona and Jurgis were married. There was a constant pressure to work, but no matter where they turned they were poverty-stricken. Jurgis insisted Ona not work, but their financial situation demanded her to. This historically accurate book displays and reveals the horrific factory work and the workers suffering. Jurgis job descriptions were unbelievable. He was asked to stay after one day from work to butcher pregnant cows and cows that had gone down or ones that were sick and had boils all over them. Their meat was then mixed with all the uncontaminated meat. Jurgis then realized how the packers operated. They sold this spoiled, contaminated, or adulterated meat without thinking twice. The workers were exposed to horrible diseases, had to work harsh working condition, were not paid for days off. The employers did not care because if they quit or would not do the work, there were plenty of people who would do the work and needed a job. Throughout the novel, it seems no matter where the family turns they cannot get ahead. After Antanas, wife Ona, and his two sons die, and Jurgis is forced to give up the house, he enters crime with a friend he met in jail. The Many Benefits of Omega-3's
The author of the The Zone series returns with a comprehensive look of the many benefits the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. He recommends using pharmaceutical-grade fish oil at his high doses to avoid toxins and gastric disturbances.

And they are high dosages; the equivalent of a tablespoon of cod liver oil (2.5 gms of Omega-3s) just for maintenance, twice that for optimal cardiovascular health, double that and more for inflammatory pain and neurological conditions. All of these are explained in different chapters. At these doses you will want to get the regular blood tests that he recommends.

After reading his book I am convinced. Yet his recommendations won't be cheap. The oil he recommends, his own, will cost $[money] a month for the maintenance dosage. I look forward to seeing the results of adding Omega-3's to the Zone nutrition program.

Great Concepts - Opens Your Mind To Healthier Living
Until I read the first Zone book I was a frequent fast food customer, eating loads and loads of high fat or high carbohydrate foods with no clue that these meals should be "balanced". Prior to reading the book, my idea of a balanced meal was a burger, fries and diet coke.

Many of the concepts in the book are a little daunting at first. When I started following the ideas I had charts showing me the exact proportion of fat-carb-protein. Too confusing for my simple mind- I soon switched to Sears' recommendation of using one fist sized portion of protein to two fist-sized portions of favorable carbohydrates.

I've begun following his advice on Omega 3, although I most admit that I purchased the cheaper Omega 3 which he sells on his zoneperfect site...and it is significantly more convenient to buy online which eliminates frequent searches of the store shelves.

I also love the ZonePerfect bars which can be purchased quite cheaply on sale (and at some of the wholesale clubs).

The end result of my focus on diet? 30lb weight loss in about 4 months. This was helped along by a regular exercise plan.

I strongly recommend this book even if you only use it as a kicking off point for upgrading your diet.

Sears Has Done It Again!
I am a firm believer in the "The Zone" diet as devised by Barry Sears. With diabetes being prevalent in my family history, I have good reasons to want to limit carbohydrates simply because of its ties to increasing the body's insulin and implications of higher risk for diabetes. Now Barry eloquently points to another very important factor in controlling ones weight and Omega 3 is a key component. He logically proves his theory throughout the book without pulling any punches. The only advice outside the book that I would give is that I found another source for high grade fish oil that is less expensive ...
