What fun!
This book is a pleasant surprise, a peek into the heart of a culture that does not see things the way we city-dwellers do. Much can be learned from this book, things that won't be found in any Sociology texts. Whats more, it is just a fun, funny little book. I wish I could think of my car as a pony....
bigtime humor , with an adventure that is 2 wild, never mild
Do anything you can to find a copy of this book. This book is apparently a target of censoship and will not be easy to locate. If you have ever lived in eastern Wyoming or western South Dakota, you will probably appreciate the humor, the sadness, and the deep wisdom of the lives of modern day Lakota Sioux. This book is hysterically funny, and I laughed out loud so many times I lost count. David Seals paints a wild tale, and I only hope he can find a way to publish more of his work. Censorship is an ugly thing.....
Engaging
IAM absolutely immersed in the culture of Powwow Highway. I felt the biting cold of sitting in the front seat sharing a joint, sharing a vision of two seperate paths that would merge and intertwine the old ways with the new. It is one of only 6 books I have ever read. Davy Crockett and Babe Ruth when I was a kid, Being There and Mother Night when I was in college, and Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyam. I also watch the tape 2-3 times per month or sometimes just a particular part, like the snow blowing across the road on the way to the monument. Thanks to all who made it happen.

Great Book!!
I think Jane Yolen told this story very well. I am a college student and did her for an Author Presentation and I was so shocked to see that the seal became a little boy. The Illustrations were absolutely fantastic. Kudos!!

Why I liked HARPO, THE BABY HARP SEAL
I liked HARPO, THE BABY HARP SEAL because I like seals and I like snow. I also like the water when it's warm. I learned that baby seals can't nurse off other mother seals.

3 Reasons to buy in spite of the free ARM PDFs
Most everything here is in ARM's free databook PDFs. So why buy it? (1) It is cheaper than printing those huge PDFs. (2) It is easier to read. (3) It gives some history and tips that are difficult to find in the PDFs, but help us all write better code.
One complaint: poor binding. Manuals should be bound so they lay flat on a desk and stay open to the page being referenced. The fact that my cheif complaint has nothing to do with the content says volumes about this book.
Good buy.
Great Reference Manual
Covers everything you might need to know about ARM assembly language programming. It has three sections: A. CPU Architecture - ARM instruction set (regular and Thumb) - ARM addressing modes - Examples B. Memory and System Architecture -System Control Coprocessor, MMU, Protection Unit, Caches and Write Buffers C. Vector Floating Point Architecture - Formats, instructions and addressing modes For a more broad and general introduction into ARM Furber's book is excellent and should be purchased first(unless you are just need a reference manual).
Gotta have it
If you work with an ARM processor of any type, you simply must have this book. It is *the* reference, -- the best source of exact instruction details, as well as memory management unit details. If you need an introduction to the ARM family, Furber's "ARM System Architecture" makes a better tutorial introduction, but if you're writing code for the ARM, you need this one.

An Unsuccessful Quest?
I have to say that I was disappointed with this book. It seems less about the legends about the selkie folk and more about what the author thinks he might feel about such legends---it feels removed, remote, uncommitted. If he was really on search for the truth behind the stories, he didn't seem to be searching very hard, and he didn't seem to share his results particularly successfully, and I never really felt touched by any sense of Celtic other-worldliness---and that's what I was hoping for and waiting for. The introduction by Seamus Heaney was, alas, the best part of the book...
selchies forever
I was fifteen when I first read this book, in 1967. I had never heard any of the Selchie legends, and I was completely enchanted by them, and by Thomson's writing. He doesn't just retell these tales; he finds those people who still tell them, and lets them speak for themselves. We hear about how they lived then, and how they live now, showing how beautiful some of the old ways were, and how sad their loss is. I have re-read it many times since and, as I get older, I find more in it that speaks to me. It should be impossible to feel nostalgia for something you have never experienced, but Thomson has managed to fill me with that emotion. I'm thrilled that it is back in print again (my copy is worn thin!) and that the celebrated poet Seamus Heaney has written the new foreword.
A wonderful glimpse into a different world
This is one of the most marvelous (in all senses of the word) reading experiences I've had in a long time. Thomson's book was originally published in the 1950's, but had fallen out of print and was resurrected through the efforts of Seamus Heaney, a friend of the author's who also provides a very helpful introduction. As a child, Thomson became fascinated by legends of seals who transform themselves into human beings (or vice versa), and in pursuit of this interest he traveled into remote areas of Scotland and Ireland where these legends were still part of the living folk tradition. But in the 1940's the tradition was dying out: the educational system pressured children to speak English rather than Gaelic, and listening to the radio had superseded traditional entertainments such as storytelling. Thomson's chapters depict a way of life that was already disappearing; he conveys not only the stories themselves but the entire "flavor" of the storytelling -- the people who tell them, the phraseology they use, their audiences, and the smoky cottages and fishy seaside shacks where the stories are told. His summary of the seal legends is fascinating, but the greatest pleasure of the book, for me, was its evocation of the world in which the legends arose. I can't recommend this book highly enough. (Suggested listening to accompany the final chapter: "The Song of the Seals" from Matt Molloy's album "Shadows on Stone.")

DONT BE FOOLED BY THE COVER
This book is about seal team one during the vietnam war.
Each chapter is about a different member of seal team 1.
The chapters arent connected to each other and this isnt really a story, but a book of stories from seal team 1 members.
You will feel how the war was in their eyes.

Disappointing
Evocative cover, but fails to deliver inside. Author is obviously not a SEAL, perhaps even a rabid wannabe. Stories are raw and disconnected, at least in part because they are uncorroborated oral histories. When finished, the reader is left with more questions about the Teams than when he started.
THE MEN BEHIND THE TRIDENT
I THOUGHT IT WAS GREAT. I THINK THAT THE STORIE REALLY BRINGS OUT THE SEAL MISSIONS THAT HAPPENED IN VIETNAM. AS A READER OF VIETNAM WAR BOOKS THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. THIS BOOK WILL NOT BE PUT AWAY ON THE BOOK RACK.
