What you need to know about keeping corals
Anyone seriously interested in corals, either from the standpoint of captive husbandry and propagation or the natural history of coral reefs has much to gain from this book. The photographs are spectacular and taxonomy and husbandry of both soft and stony corals are presented in detail for the aquarist. The book is a valuable tool and no reef aquarist would regret purchasing it.

A Must Have for the Reef Tank Hobbyist!
This is one of the most informative publication on the coverage of corals for reef keeping in a single volume. The pictures may be a bit oversaturated but the information it contains is highly informative and is well researched.

In the tradition of Delbeek & Sprung 2 volume series and Fossa and Nilsens MCRA 4 volume series this stands in league with their books for its extensive coverage!

If you like coral reef tanks then this book is for you!!

Aquarium Corals:
I highly recommend this book for the reef hobbiest of all levels! It's packed with lots of information on coral lighting, care, and best of all coral diseases and treatment. Unlike my other reference books that are packed with more information about fish than they are with coral care, this book is ALL ABOUT CORALS. You won't be disappointed!

Gemini Game Review
I liked when they ran from the police because it was not only exciting, but they did a lot, too. Like play Meteors, run away from some gangsters, try to find a copy of their game, and actually play their game that had virus in it. I also liked how the author switched to the police, and then back to the twins. He usually did this between chapters. I didn't like how he explained the hole in the back of the neck that was used to plug the human brain to the game. That was digusting! No one in the future would do that! Of course no one would be that crazy to get a plug in the back of their neck, because it would be quite costly. All in all I thought that it was good because it started out quick, and had a lot of detail. This is a very good book. A must read for you Sci-fi readers!!

Programming Language Pragmatics
Published in Paperback by Morgan Kaufmann (1999)
Author: Michael Lee Scott
Amazon base price: $47.95
Average review score:

A classic
For everyone that ever has worked on or plans to implement a compiler/interpreter. It gave me many new insights on different implementation issues. This book is written in such a pedagogical, clear and exciting way that it can be read like a novel or a thriller (pick Your choice).

A magnificent achievement--a bedrock of knowledge, for life
I am in the process of reading this book for a review and already I am compelled (at the conclusion of chp. 7 of 13) to write a glowing review. This book truly is an achievement and it lives up to my predecessor's comments. I hasten to emphasize that this textbook combines form and content to a very high degree: it is written superbly with great clarity, the topics are organized extremely well and meaningfully, and finally it provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of programming. In the course of my reading, I have never felt the need to skip sections; there are no sections that are abstruse or cursorily covered. All sections are integrated with the others and each section offers very useful knowledge. The author clearly displays a profound understanding of all aspects of his endeavor. I must emphasize that in the vast majority of cases with textbooks, in any academic area, the impression is that the author has intimate knowledge of 60% of the material he covers, and as for the latter 40% of the material he has at best good knowledge or passing familiarity but is able to speak on these topics because of his qualifications. The greatest merit of this book is that one can very profitably go through a self-study programme through all 13 chapters and come away much superior to one's peers in college or graduate school or industry (I qualify this statement at present: I have read only 7 chapters yet, but intend to read all 13). Finally, if you are familiar with the excellent book on Computer Architecture by Patterson and Hennesy, then I say that this book is on level par with that venerable textbook.

Tough Topic - Crystal Clear Explanation
I have always enjoyed reading programming-language and compiler books and most of them are quite tough on a first-read.

Programming Language Pragmatics is one huge exception. None of the books I have read come close to the clarity that this book exhibits. On many occassions, the choice of words and presentation in this book has made me go 'Wow, I thought I already knew this stuff...'

Besides core topics, it has interesting discussion like concurrency, data-abstraction (object-oriented) and non-imperative programming models (functional and logic).

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibroids: New Techniques and Therapies--Including Breakthrough Alternatives to Hysterectomy

Up To Date Doctors Get Along and Offer Comprehensive Advice
Knowledge about fibroids and available treatment options has been changing rather rapidly. This book is clearly the most accurate and up to date at the present time (2003). In a changing field, accurate and up-to-date are critically important. That alone, makes Goodwin/Broder a must-read for any woman dealing with fibroids.

This book is well documented, giving citations chapter by chapter - so the reader has some idea what information came from which sources, and can refer to those sources should she wish.

It is very heartening to see an Interventional Radiologist (Goodwin) and a Gynecologist (Broder) COOPERATING to provide COMPLETE information about fibroids in ONE book. Too frequently, these two branches of medicine appear to be competing with one another, even trying to discredit one another, on issues relating to fibroids and treatment of fibroids. There are treatments for fibroids which involve each of these doctor's specializations. Together these two authors make it possible for women to consider the options based on the knowledge of doctors who support what is best for the PATIENT rather than what is best for the individual doctor's ego or pocketbook. This book does that and does it splendidly well. Broder and Goodwin together set out both the pluses and minuses of the various available treatments and what's appropriate when - regardless of whose specialty each treatment lies within.

The authors even cover what's known about treatments of the future including some currently in clinical trials. Goodwin and Broder also discuss lifestyle changes, suggest ways to implement some of them, and what effects one might or might not realistically expect from such changes. The book is rational rather than emotional.

Although this book is written by doctors, it is clear, concise, easy to comprehend and complete. It is not preachy. It does not talk down to the reader. These authors understand their audience and are able to effectively communicate needed information.

A GREAT READ
This is an informative, easy to read book which reveals important information we need to know. It puts the fear we may have into perspective and was very helpful.

A Very Helpful and Insightful Book
This book was very helpful. I have fibroids and my doctor told me to have a hysterectomy. I am glad I read this book. It gave me a better understanding of my condition. I finished this book with an understanding of my diagnosis and armed with some questions to ask my doctor and a feeling that I was taking charge of my situation. Thank you, thank you , thank you.

Outstanding book for the beginner marine fishkeeper
This is a well-done book providing plenty of information about marine aquarium setup and maintenance. My mother's a librarian so I've read several books on this subject all of which seemed too trivial and uninformative or written for the professional reef tank hobbyist but this book seemed like the perfect fit for me. The author takes the reader step-by-step through the process of identifying and purchasing the necessary equipment to seting up the tank and equipment to choosing and introducing fish to the tank and of course, maintaining the aquarium. The book is very informative and should bolster confidence in a beginner looking to setup a small to midsize tank. The author pariticularly covers filtration methodologies very well focusing primarily on the highly regarded "Berlin" method. A must have for beginners and intermediate fishkeepers looking to setup a marine tank. I would recommend a more detailed book for specifically covering choosing and caring for different types of marine fish, corals, invertebrates, etc., but this is otherwise a great book.

Excellent Book for the Beginner
If you are thinking about your first marine aquarium, this is a great book the start with. It was recommended by two stores I went to. It is easy reading with great diagrams and pictures. Everything from sizing to tank to suggestions of what fish and invertabrates to start with.

As with most of these books, it is not a substitute for your local expert. However, they even had advice on picking an expert that steered my away from the "big mall pet stores" to a smaller store where I found a truly knowlegable professional. I know my tank will be a success.

He beat me to it!
... covers just about everything imaginable, and does so in such a clear & concise way that there is little point in my trying to cover it again.
I am truly impressed. This so-called beginner's book scarcely rates that category; this is the very sort of information that beginners REALLY need but oh-so rarely ever get until it is too late. Moreover, it is presented in a form that beginners can understand and digest with ease. Truly a gem, and destined to be a classic.
The checklists, the explanations which make the complex simple, the techniques, the wonderful illustrations, the tips & tricks, the lists of common mistakes to avoid, ( and which species to avoid ) and the truly useful advice make this book very complete. It's 140+ pages are chocked full of good information without a lot of "fluff"; it's truly "all-meat, no filler!"
If I had to recommend just ONE book for the beginning marine hobbyist, I think that this would be the one. I even recommend it highly to intermediate hobbyists. While it doesn't cover every single aspect of the marine hobby, ( not that any one book, or even any given dozen ever books could ) it aptly covers the most important things, and most importantly, it covers them in a way which will make it the most useful to it's target audience...

Wayne Rainey: His Own Story

Perserverance - the trait of a Champion
It's been some time since I last read this biography of Wayne Rainey, but I certainly remember the emotions, and especially the growing pride, I felt with each turned page. The writing was very easy to read, and the content flowed well from Wayne's childhood and foundation of a Champion in the making, through his personal relationships, and to the present (time of writing). I recommend this book to all that loved to watch his battles with Eddie Lawson, Kevin Schwantz, Freddie Spencer, and Mick Doohan, and wish to simply know more about the Champion. And I recommend it to anyone that thinks the world and life aren't fair. Perservere!

Honest & touching
I met wayne as a fan in 1987 at Road Atlanta when he rode for Honda after having read so many magazines about him.I never Heard of Kevin Schwantz until that weekend and Wayne despite being very busy, courteously found time to have Shay take a photo of both of us and give me an autograph. He was so receptive and pleasant. That weekend I watched in awe his amazing battle against Kevin's Suzuki and would never forget that day for the rest of my life. Then I continued to watch him on TV from 1988 to that fateful day.The book brought tears and lumps in my throat. This book tells it all and is a must buy.I am also a racer a know the will and the determination to win at all costs. This book also helps us analyze ourselves and our personal relationship with GOD.A precious collector's item to have.

Wonderful and Sad Story!
This is a must for every motorcycle racing fan. I am a GP fan but unfortunately Wayne's career ended a couple of years before I started getting into bike racing. This book is an amazing tale of courage. I could not imagine going through what he had to go through. One of the best biographies I have ever read.

Official VisiBroker for Java Handbook
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (08 January, 1999)
Authors: Michael McCaffery, Bill Scott, and William Scott
Amazon base price: $39.99
Average review score:

The most comprehensive book on Visibroker for Java to date!
This book is by far the best handbook for any development tool I've ever read. I recommend it to anyone who has a vague interest in learning how to program with the VisiBroker for Java.

A must have book for CORBA/JAVA developer
Too many CORBA/JAVA books just discuss the CORBA in a high level and throw a lot of terms in the first chapter and make the readers frustrated. (Something I thought those authors just do a simple copy and paste from other sources). "The official VisiBroker for Java" is different. It is an excellent and practical book. It is the first CORBA book I can read throught the first three chapter after try many others.

If you want to have time for a life, buy this book.
This book is the difference between going home at 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

I've been working with Visibroker for Java for about 3 years now. The documentation that comes with the product itself is so bad that the only way I learned anything about the product was from experimenting with it.

About six months ago, I bought this book. I learned more from reading this book than I did from years of working with the product itself. (Usually it's the opposite.)

If you working on a project using Visibroker for Java, or any ORB for that matter, you must get this book. It will save you hours of frustration and you'll have time to spare to play Unreal Tournamnent.

In the Face of God
Published in Hardcover by Word Publishing (1996)
Author: Michael Scott Horton
Amazon base price: $13.29
List price: $18.99 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

Books like these...
...change the way we look at spirituality. In our decadent day of modern Christian culture, very few are proclaiming the gospel truths that will enable us to return to the Better Way - the way of Scripture. Dr. Horton is one of these few, and this book is in my opinion his finest. Whether you are Reformed, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Roman or else, this book will broaden, if not transform, your view of biblical spirituality - the spirituality of the cross. Horton argues through sound exegesis that Biblical spirituality does not consist of the private, mystical ascension that is characteristic of both our modern day and the early church heresy of Gnosticism. The spirituality condoned in Scripture does not describe such ascension of man to the throne of God (for in so doing we find only fire and judgment). Rather, our spirituality is characterized by the descent of God to us (for there alone do we find grace, hope and peace), through Jesus Christ our mediator. Our spirituality consists in being identified with Christ, and this is afforded in the good grace of biblically instituted material sacraments. Buy this book, read it, teach it and re-read it.

Face to Face with God
Horton hits the nail right between the proverbial eyes with his treatment of this book on worship. If you're looking for something provocative, this is it. Read it and think, then weep at what you've mistakenly thought of or practiced as worship. Highly recommended.

A Passionate Plea for True Intimacy with God
This is a terrific book. Michael Horton steers the reader away from the current emphasis on subjective, gnostic religion -- especially in modern charismatic/Pentecostalism and much of pop evangelicalism -- and shows what true intimacy with the Almighty means. He also has an appendix answering common questions, including the subjective, self-centeredness common in modern praise and worship music. You might not agree with every point, but In the Face of God deserves your time and attention.

The Merchant Prince
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Pocket Books (22 May, 2001)
Authors: Armin Shimerman and Michael Scott
Amazon base price: $6.99
Average review score:

Ah, good ol' sci-fi...
I admit, it's been a long time since I've picked up a science fiction book with the intent of reading it. I've been disenfranchised with the entire genre as a whole since I tried stomaching a few bad novels. But, lo and behold, this one made me sit up and take note! There is hope yet!

This novel in particular I was pleased with because of its historical accuracy to the Renaissance period while being unafraid to drop in a bit of alien involvement here and there. The main character, John Dee, is also particularly endearing. While he's easily recognizable as the protagonist and the one who is supposed to "save the world" (such as it is) he's still a bit of a scoundrel and a villain. I would, without a doubt, recommend this novel.

Classic science fiction adventure!
Co-authors Armin Shimmerman and Michael Scott have done an *excellent* job in creating a believable, though often bleak, view of Earth's near future. This is good, solid science fiction, with aliens, advanced technology, societal commentary, the threatened end of the world as we know it -- all the best SF elements. Better still, the characters and dialogue are *fantastic* -- especially the hero, Dr. John Dee. An incredibly complex person, admirable yet by no means a saint, strong and self-sufficient yet sympathetic. The supporting characters are also intriguing and well developed. If this could be a series of novels, I'd love to see and learn more of Dr. Dee... on the other hand, after his amazing feats of derring-do in this book, any further adventures would run the risk of feeling anti-climactic! The "Star Trek" references scattered here and there through the story are certainly fun -- but you don't have to like "Trek" to appreciate this book. It's a though-provoking, self-contained story in the best traditions of classic SF -- and Dee is a unique, exciting hero. Don't miss this one!

The Merchant Prince Rules
I think this book is the best I've read in a longtime. Fans of Armin Shimerman will love this. It is his first I've read outside of his Startrek books, but it won't be the last!
