A great guide to golf in Ireland, and an awesome read!
Richard Phinney and Scott Whitley have produced the best book on golf in Ireland to date. It's full of first accounts of the Emerald Isles' best courses as well as interesting stories about Irish characters in the world of golf. You'll read it more than once.

Great read!
The best book ever written about Irish Golf. I read this book in preparation for a trip to Ireland last summer and took it along for the trip. The authors clearly love golf and do a great job in helping to explain why Irish golf is so special. If you only read one book on golf this year, let this one be it. However, after reading the book you might have an uncontrollable desire to make the trip yourself!

Unique and helpful guide to golfing in Ireland
This book is a very helpful and unique guide to those who are planning a golfing vacation in Ireland. There is very little information like this in the usual travel books. The authors provide discriptions and history of the top 30 courses in Ireland in a very organized easy to read format. (There is information about 100 other courses as well) There is also some information on where to stay, eat, costs and other sites. Only one criticism, I wish there was more! I would like to know more about the nuts and bolts of getting around with golf clubs, some out of the way golf interests and information on unusual golf (not just the famous). However, I must say, I did appreciate the listing of golf tournaments that foreigners can play

This is a great book for anyone who appreciates a dry wit and intelligent sense of humor. I agree with the other reviewer who compares his writing with Dave Barry but "less wacky." Rather than write about family and chores, Leary's focus is more broad, encompassing the media and pop culture. A very fun read. The illustrations are cool, too! I bet Bill Douglas does great comic-style work, too.

Outstanding
This is a FANTASTIC book. I've read Sean's column for years, and was delighted when he decided to publish a book with some of his greatest columns. Sean's command of the English Vocabulary is simply amazing. He has a way of phrasing words and sentences that will leave you in awe, wondering "How does he come up with that?"

If you are a Dave Berry fan, this book is a MUST-BUY! I think that Sean is far more talented than Dave is, not to mention just a tad less wacky. Dave, I think, writes more for the older generation, where-as Sean is more into Pop Culture and is more in tune with what is popular and current. Plus, Sean has a lot of insight and knowledge of just about anything pertaining to the entertainment world. You can't help but from laughing out loud when you read this book. For example, one of my favorite columns in the book is called, "Behold the Power of Candy". He was writing a spoof on candy becoming a super drug. Here is an excerpt... It all started with a tiny mint call Mento's. The Mentos commercials chronicle several dorks who find themselves in circumstances that would twist the mind of David Lynch.... Not all of the columns are humorous ones, there are some serious ones but the majority are funny. He begins with an amazing column that he wrote when he was 7, then ends with a spoof on VH1's "Behind the Music". Also, throughout the book he has little snippets of background information that gives you a little bit of behind the scenes.

Yes, I highly suggest buying this book. The price is right and you will NOT be disappointed I can promise you that! And if this book doesn't at the very minimum leave you with a smile on your face, then I guess you will need to be visited by "Foolish Jack"!

A Columnist for Folks in their 20s and 30s
Now younger (twenties and thirties) readers have a columnist who can speak to their age range. Sean's always funny, and at times he's hilarious! Sean's columns are hip and poke pointed but affectionate fun at lots of society's weirdisms. A cool book! Sean's column runs in the Midwest, but you don't have to be an Iowan like me to enjoy this book. Someday this guy will probably be national.

Fair Play
I found this book provided innovative and real solutions to the various problems I've faced at my children's baseball and hockey games over the past several years.

Attention parents of athletes!
I am very fortunate that I have two sons that are naturally talented
athletes and are always selected to be on travel and all-star teams. When I
read Fair Play I was surprised to find that despite the success my sons have
had I learned that they could be excelling and learning more if they were
invovled in programs such as the book suggests and illustrates. This is
truly a book for every parent to read.

Everyone needs a vacation every now and again. Nameless is no exception as he escapes from the memory of his ex-partner's suicide and goes off to a mountain resort for rejuvination. Peace, quiet and solitude is just what he needs!

Revenge, payback and hatred is what another vactioner desires as he plots the demise of all those who made him suffer when imprisoned. He too, desires the solitude needed to hatch his murderous plot. When he and Nameless encounter one another an explosive adventure begins leading both into mayhem.

Pronzini takes us into the mind of a mad man whose psychosis keeps Nameless on the edge. Allow yourself to be intrigued and put on the edge by another exciting thriller in the Nameless series. Let's go fishing with Nameless.

I had difficulty putting it down!
This was a book that holds your interest from start to finish. "Nameless" drives some friends to a mountain lake resort. A murder occurs nearby, made to look like an accident. Nameless has a gut feeling though and when the widow asks him to find the murder. the chase is on! Action builds and maintains itself throughout the book until finally Nameless comes through and solves the crime. Exciting reading. Makes me want to read other Pronzini books as soon as possible. Interesting approach to have an un-named hero..does he ever get a name!

A hilarious book satirizing "The Clinton Years"
Jim Wrenn, author of the Clinton Liebrary Book 2001 Edition at clintonliebrarybook.com gives a rave review to SNL Presents The Clinton Years: "I laughed so hard my throat hurt. It will be banned from all public libraries because no one will be able to read it without laughing out loud. The book presents color pictures and text from SNL skits (about Clinton) in such a way as to elicit just as much laughter as watching the skit on Saturday Night Live."

sdfgh
this is hilarious. I laughed the entire time i read the book.

Excellent
I'm an experienced programmer although I'm just learning VB. This book is essential to becoming productive quickly.

Already an experienced VB programmer? This book is for you!
Being a VB Consultant and a VB Teacher, I've had the opportunity to go through many VB books. By far, VB4 Unleashed is the best. If you're already a good VB programmer, VB4 Unleashed will take you further. You'll learn how-to easily add sound (.wav) to your applications, how-to make screen savers, and even help files. Best part is that there is NO need to purchase any additional third-party controls in order to use the examples. (E.G. Learn Visual Basic in 21 days requires purchase of 3rd party OCX controls to use many of the examples.) I highly recommend this book. Solid and Concise
It is well-named, addressing the needs of the runner desiring to racing faster--the runner who will commit to the proper training and preparation. It gives training plans and points for all distance levels, including cross-country, which is not seen in most other books.

I did not feel, however, that I learned much new information. Glover's book handle similar material, and I gave it five stars. To the credit of "Road Racing" is that you do not need to hunt for what you want to know, and you know you can count on these authors' authority. Not only have they excelled as athletes, but they are respected by their peers and the various running periodicals.

This book is well written and well organized, succinctly getting its points across. Its strongest aspect is that it explains in readable language what needs to be done in a limited number of pages (189 pp).

Now go run.

Train smarter, train easier
Pfitzinger's book finally delivers on what I always want from a book on a complex subject, simple explanations and simple solutions. Why write 800 pages when 188 will suffice. If you are only looking to train for 5K's then you can skip the section on 10K and marathon training and get even more concise explanations. This book gives short, simple explanations to the key elements of a training program. We now know everything we need to know about VO2 max and lactate threshold training, their relative importance, how to improve them and how to incorporate them into your training program. Pete indirectly points out how most of us are doing no lactate threshold training (by running most of our daily runs to slow) and doing all of our interval work to fast. I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve his or her racing times.

I would also suggest buying "Daniels Running Formula". I bought it last summer and my 5K's times went down from 19:40 to 18:50. I bought "Road Racing for Serious Runners" to basically get a second opinion on Daniel's theories. Actually these are not opinions or theories. These are time-tested methods back by sound science. I'm 43 years old and I'm living proof that random training will yield random results. Both Pfitzinger and Jack Daniels book will eliminate the "lets try this" approach to training. Both books cover the same topics and both authors come up with the basically the same training program. Daniels book breaks his schedule into 4 six-week phases while Pfitzinger has a 10-week and an 11 phase. When you look at both plans it becomes obvious and almost laughable on how easy it is to improve on your racing times (and in my case actually cut back on the training intensity).

I would buy both books so you can really feel good about your new training methods. Pete's book is simpler and has separate schedules for some of us low 20-40 mile per week folks. Daniels book has slightly more science and covers more topics. Daniels also has been around longer and has trained more athletes. There are only a few contradictions in Pete's book. He states on page 21 that your volume of Vo2 max workouts (your hard intervals) should be 1 workout per week with a total distance covered of 4 to 8K with the possibility of adding a second lower volume session each week. This corresponds with Daniels book where he has 2 Vo2 max sessions each week (or 1 Vo2 Max and a race). But when you get to the detailed 5K schedules for the 20-40 miles per week you only see 6 Vo2 max workouts scheduled in 21 weeks, despite them being listed as the number one priority. Also only 5 threshold workouts are scheduled in the last 11 weeks for the 20-40 mile schedule. I guess Pete is no dummy. He knows that Bill Rodgers may not use his book and that it will be geared towards people like me. He knows that I'm going to sneak in a combination of ten 5K and 8K races this fall before I attempt to peak in early December. The Daniels book just encourages it and has those realities clearly shown on the schedules. Just buy both books, start training smarter and in some cases a little easier. I've bought bad unhealthy lunches for [PRICE]. If you run this will be the best [PRICE} you will ever spend.

Couldn't be better.
I can't imagine a better, more concise book on running training for distances over 1500m. A great introduction to the physiology of endurance racing, and how to apply this knowledge directly to your own workouts.

The Plain Reader

Authors: Scott Savage and Bill McKibben
Amazon base price: $12.95

A Mix
The Plain Reader is a collection of articles that once appeared in the magazine "Plain". Its authors are comprised of individuals with varying philosophies on the virtues of a simple life. Some articles are written by Quakers, Amish and Brethren. There are also articles by homesteaders, authors of several books, and others.

Since the authors come from so many different backgrounds, the articles aren't always compatible. For example, several of the articles are extremely anti-technology, anti-electricity, anti-competition, anti-public school education, etc., whereas others espouse the use of some of these things in moderation.

To me, extremism in any direction is the antithesis of simplicity, which, after all, is what this book is supposed to be about. Still, the book is correctly subtitled "Essays on Making a Simple Life" - it is essays by different people, with different backgrounds and different beliefs about what constitutes a simple life. It is an educational read, not only about simplicity, but also about how certain groups view the rest of the world.

Ten stars and Priceless wisdom
This is one of those days when I am feeling terribly blessed because I was able to buy a copy of The Plain Reader Essays on Making a Simple Life - Edited by Scott Savage. This is one of those books if you can find a copy I recommend you buy it. It is out of print, so I think the only places you can find a copy are via used books or small new booksellers who may have a copy stuck away somewhere.

So what makes this book a gem? Well, for one thing it is a series of articles on a variety of topics, written by a lot of simple living folks on subjects that those seeking or living a simple life will really appreciate. One might even say its a great book to have next to your bedside so you can read something short, and encouraging before going to sleep.

Wonderful writing and thought provoking
A wonderful view of the world without all the gadgets we think are necessary. A great way to live and belong in the world. As a Christian I think we could do without alot of the junk the world thinks we need. Thanks for a great book.

The most comprehensive book on Visibroker for Java to date!
This book is by far the best handbook for any development tool I've ever read. I recommend it to anyone who has a vague interest in learning how to program with the VisiBroker for Java.

A must have book for CORBA/JAVA developer
Too many CORBA/JAVA books just discuss the CORBA in a high level and throw a lot of terms in the first chapter and make the readers frustrated. (Something I thought those authors just do a simple copy and paste from other sources). "The official VisiBroker for Java" is different. It is an excellent and practical book. It is the first CORBA book I can read throught the first three chapter after try many others.

If you want to have time for a life, buy this book.
This book is the difference between going home at 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

I've been working with Visibroker for Java for about 3 years now. The documentation that comes with the product itself is so bad that the only way I learned anything about the product was from experimenting with it.

About six months ago, I bought this book. I learned more from reading this book than I did from years of working with the product itself. (Usually it's the opposite.)

If you working on a project using Visibroker for Java, or any ORB for that matter, you must get this book. It will save you hours of frustration and you'll have time to spare to play Unreal Tournamnent.

a bit of Americana
interesting reading about something most of us eat. It is interesting to see how the companies started, the marketing and remember brands we used to eat that are now part of history.

An evolutionary history
The history of the American breakfast cereal and how it evolved from a health food to junk food. Originally promoted by religious organizations it is now huckstered by the ad industry. This is also a history of popular culture and the role cereal played in promoting give away gimmics, comic characters, radio programs, and TV cartoons. It has all the elements of both tragedy and comedy. Highly recommended. Educational and entertaining. A great read.

Incredibly Interesting Book for Cereal Enthusiasts!
A cereal history with information on the characters (both real and animated) that have popularized cereal in the United States. Also has lots of insight on character marketing and advertising. Very interesting reading for cereal enthusiasts!
