Great Book - well written, thoughtful, honest.
Story of an ordinary family - facing all of life's complications. Scofield skillfully leads the reader to understand the choices of the sometimes not-so-attractive characters. The reader's sympathies are drawn to the strong, rugged, flawed, male at the expense of the "sensitive" man - not your usual feminine perspective.

A good read
This book is well written and compelling. It's actually two stories about the lives of two women--a mother and a daughter--the first part ends when the daughter is born, the second begins several years after the mother has died, so we never see the mother and daughter on the "stage" together.

Scofield writes beautifully and tells a good story. Part one was a bit slow at times--in the beginning especially--and because it takes place in the first half of the 20th century, I felt at times it veered just a touch into cliche, ie, our idea of history, versus what it was really like back then. Part two is excellent and gripping. You really feel for this woman as she becomes an adult and mother herself, who is utterly haunted by the loss of her own mother, and because of this not much of a mother to her own daughter and a pretty awful wife to her seemingly decent husband. Scofield seems more comfortable writing about this character because she lives in Scofield's own times. I recommend this book!

Like a good photograph....it stays with you...

I read a lot of books....I usually start one with great expectations and turn the final page with the resignation of good time, ill-spent.

"Plain Seeing," however, is quite different. I truly savored each page and was sorry when the story was over.

I'll read more Scofield. She's my kind of writer....she tells a compelling story, fills it with an odd-ball mix of characters, and lets the chips fall where they may. In other words, she puts real life into her work.

Read this book!

Probably Sandra Scofield's best book to date.
I was riveted by this book. The depths of the characters, the seamless storytelling and the immense human quality is gripping. The intristices between women, between mother and daughter is eloquent. Read this book, it's excellent.

A Solid Read from Scofield
Having heard Ms. Scofield read her latest work Plain Speaking at my college campus and greatly enjoyed it, I picked up this earlier work and have enjoyed it as much as Plain Speaking. Ms. Scofield has an amazing grasp on the human spirit and has written a well-formed book with an inspiring plot.

A Chance to See Egypt
T randomly bought this book this summer and was so surprised at how it touched me -- the colorful descriptions of life in Mexico not only made me think of the country and its people in a new and much more accepting light, but also made me feel as if I knew the characters personally. The intelligent weaving of events and characters also intrigued me until the very last page. And last but not least I felt a deep connection with the main character that as an avid reader I don't remember feeling before. The way he acted and reacted towards events provided much appreciated insight. Thanks for a great book!

too many unpleasant characters
Not as good as later book, More than Allies, or earlier Gringa, because there are too many unsympathetic characters, including the main character. Too many characters in general for a short novel, but great attention to detail and a nice change from the usual sappy look at the fifties

It's all true
Walking Dunes is a true story. I lived next door to "David" as a child. I don't remember Sandra Scofield but she had to have been there. This book captures life in West Texas like no other.

A meeting of cultures
Because I, like the protagonist of this novel, am involved in an interracial relationship, I found quite a few similarities between my experiences and hers. The novel creates contradictory emotions within the reader, making you yearn to be there with Abby yet at the same time causing you to recoil from the treatment she gets from the men in her life. I can't wait to read Sandra Scofield's other works!
