An excellent overview!
Mr. Schwarz has written a good summary of the field of Christology. Not something that is easily done.

He opens the book by defining the Christological problem that has plagued Christians for many centuries; how is the Jesus of earth related with the Christ of faith?

Hans then moves through important and historical thinkers on the subject. This section of the book is a little dry, but still worth the read.

Finally, Hans launches into his own interpretation of Christology. I found his outlook on the subject and very readable.

If you are interested in the subject of Christology, I would highly recommend this book.

Theologically solid and readable Christology--excellent
This text on Christology provides an extensive and well informed overview of the history of doctrinal thought on Jesus of Nazareth up to and including modern theological considerations. It is very readable, especially for a translation from German. In this age when people calling themselves "Christians" deny Christ, Schwarz's text is very much needed. Every modern Christian should read and digest the information and arguments presented in this book.

Method and Context As Problems for Contemporary Theology: Doing Theology in an Alien World (Toronto Studies in Theology, Vol 58)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (1991)
Author: Hans Schwarz
Amazon base price: $89.95
Average review score:

An aid to Theological Relevance
An intriguing and thoughtful monograph, which delineates five key elements that one must consider when constructing a theology to assure that the resulting theological expression is both relevant, non-relativistic, yet dialogical or admittedly a theology that is "on the way."
Schwarz cites five "contexts" in which theology must be constructed and he refers to these as "referents." The five referents are the 1)comsic, 2)historical, 3)textual, 4)cultic, and 5)Christ. Admitting that these are only a few of the situations that theology must address, given the "alien" context of this world toward God, these five are the most critical.
The Cosmic context refers to the way in which theology accounts for God's concrete presence and realization of salvation in this world. The historical context refers to how theology affirms that God is the author of history while allowing humanity the responsibility to work out the "details of history." The textual context addresses the way theology speaks of the authority and relevance of the biblical text. The cultic context demands that all theology be the task of the church with the community in mind. The Christ context requires that ecclesial unity find its origin in Christ alone.
These referents are helpful for developing a sound theological method. While the content of the book is thoughtful, there is an obvious thrust for eccumenical unity. The section on religious pluralism is also disconcerting, because Schwarz affirms the possibility of salvation apart from Christ, yet does not further explain his view. His language comes very close to a universal savation in Christ.
Other issues concern style and form. There are many typos; the passive voice is used carelessly throughout; and there is a section in the second chapter that is cut and pasted into the last chapter. It appears that he rushed this book off the presses. Overall, however, it is an excellent read.
