I can't wait to pick up this book. AW is the best soap on tv
I have been watching ANOTHER WORLD for over 10 years. I started watching when Anne Heche played Vicky/Marley. When she left I watched sporatically but in the last 2 years I have become hooked again. When I heard that NBC had cancelled it I was devastated. AW is such a wonderful show with incredible actors and great storylines. The fact that NBC would cancel AW when there was another soap on NBC with lower ratings makes me furious. Don't the fans count? Don't ratings count? I will never ever watch NBC again and I hope all AW fans do the same. There are several programs on NBC that I used to watch but they may as well cancel them too because I can not look at the NBC logo without feeling angry and betrayed. Good-bye NBC. FANS OF ANOTHER WORLD PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP. HOPEFULLY ANOTHER NETWORK WILL DECIDE TO AIR ANOTHER WORLD. WRITE CBS OR ABC. LET'S SAVE AW. IT'S THE BEST SHOW ON TV AND IT DESERVES 35 MORE YEARS ON TELEVISION

"Another World", my escape from reality has been cancelled
The 35th Anniversary Celebration of Another World Memorial Book is wonderful. I received a copy for my birthday and was completely thrilled with the quality of the writing and photographs. I have ordered another copy as a surprise gift for my mother.

I can't believe how many times my mother and I said: "Do you remember that?" or "look how young so and so is that picture"

As you can tell I am a die-hard fan of the program, and I was outraged and frustrated over the recent cancellation of my family's favorite television show. According to a source in New York, it has been implied that NBC Inc. feels that there has been little concern raised from fans over the devastating news. I beg to differ. Why would so many fans across North America be so viligent in saving "Another World" through rally's, polls, and petitions if we did not care?

"Another World" has been a terrific source of entertainment for my family for 33 years. My mother started to watch AW in high school. She weaned me on the program. I am sure that I uttered the two "Cory" matriarchs names instead of Mommy and Daddy as my first words. The show has never ceased to entertain us. We all work full time, and look forward to relaxing by watching the taped show every evening after dinner. Over the last few years we even converted my father. He has been well trained and versed in the various plots and schemes of the good, bad, and the ugly of "BAY CITY", and he too is now among the "enchanted" "Another World" fans.

I do not understand why a show as poorly written, cheaply filmed and acted in as "Sunset Beach" will remain on the air, while a quality program with brilliantly written plots and storylines is taken away from its loyal viewers. Not only does the show employ the best actors on daytime, it excels in set, wardrobe and makeup execution. We are never bombarded with story lines that "go on forever" or with characters that "talk" to themselves. Nothing aggravates me more than a program that continually "rehashes" storylines everyday. Die hard viewers know what's going on, we do not need to waste half the show filling us in on what we already know. "Another World" has never done this to us-unlike other programs such as "Sunset Beach" or the painfully outdated "Days of our Lives".

If NBC Inc. refuses to wake up and keep "Another World" on the air, "someone" else must realize the ecomomic and emotional value of this show, and "pick" it up. I hope for the sakes of everyone involved in the production of "Another World" that another network succeeds in doing so. It would be a great loss not to be able to "laugh, cry, and yell" at our favorite characters everyday.

Please do what you can to keep "Another World" alive. To those of you at NBC Inc., as Shania Twain would say, "DON"T BE STUPID", keep the show on. "Where there's supply and demand there's a way". I'm sure of it. I pray that I'll be watching the show with my kids, and grand-children far into the future.

Here's to another 35 years "AnotherWorld". You ALL are the best. Thank you for many years of fashion tips and frequent escapes from the sometimes boring reality of normal day to day life of work, work, work.

Sincerely,

Stephanie K. Boyle "Loyal Another World Fan"

Another World Celebrates!
In the midst of cancellation, this book by Julie Poll offers a way to remember television's best soap opera. Relive the lives, loves, tears, and joys of Bay City's finest! I really enjoyed the book from cover to cover. The new photos, the dialogues from the episodes, the behind the scenes information... They are an amazing read for any AW fan, and at this time, more poignant than ever. AW will forever remain close to my heart. The book is the definitive way to celebrate AW's 35th anniversary.

One of the Very Best Vietnam Books
This is an amazing work when you consider it's Webb's first book. The writing is so compelling you may feel like you've been dropped into a rice paddy with Webb's/Hodges' platoon.

In Robert Timberg's book, The Nightingale's Song, Webb is a featured character. He describes Webb's experiences from the Naval Academy through his stint as Secretary of the Navy. The real people who were main characters in Fields of Fire are discussed. He also tells the amazing story of how Webb read Hemingway at the urging of a law school classmate and decided he could write like that. I'm sure glad he did. All of his books are among the best I've read.

PFC Goodrich finds Fields of Fire enlightening
There is an element of truth in every good lie. While listening to a review of James Webb's newest book, Something to Die For, on NPR in May of 1991, it occurred to me that the James H. Webb, Jr. who recently had been SecNav was my Platoon Leader in Vietnam in early 1969 through 1 July 1969 when I was medivac'ed out of the field and into DaNang Naval Hospital for the second time in two months. While Jim had become a fairly successful lawyer/bureaucrat/writer, I returned to Purdue and finished my undergrad and MS degrees in Civil Engineering. Combat gives one a renewed sense of purpose and direction. I picked up a copy of Fields of Fire and noticed that the list of characters, any relationship of which to anyone living or dead being purely circumstantial, included a number of fairly identifiable idiosyncracies. When I located Jim Webb in Arlington, VA, I phoned him and we talked about common experiences and whatever happened to , but we didn't talk about any of his four books, as I had not yet read Fields of Fire (1978), A Sense of Honor (1981), A Country Such as This (1983), or the then-new (Feb. 1991) Something to Die For--a rather prescient fiction about Ethiopia and Eritrea (read "Iraq and Kuwait"). When I later read Fields of Fire, I identified with the character PFC Will Goodrich, as I had been in the Peace Corps before entering the Marine Corps, was booted out of the Peace Corps because my family was "too militarily-oriented", had thought I could get into the Marine Corps Band or the Drum and Bugle Corps (NOT!), and ended up a fairly inept warrier and was medivac'ed out with leg wounds. Having been unable to read books, see movies, or deal with other veterans for some time after my war was over, I appreciated the analysis contained in Fields of Fire. Interestingly, in my mind I created a myth that Jim Webb had simply maintained a journal of our exploits and spilled them out to produce a very readably, terrifying, and realistic tale. My little brother, coincidentally a plebe at USNA and a student of Instructor First Classman James Webb in 1968, sent me a copy of Robert Timberg's "The Nightingale's Song" this year. The segments about Jim Webb and his development as an author are stimulating and enlightening to one who invented the myth of "pouring out a prize-winning book". Because of my exposure to the events and some of the characters, and because of my personal admiration and respect for the author, I rate this book (and his 3 others) very high

A Heartbreaking Classic
I've read Gustav Hasford's "The Shorttimers," and Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried." Both are excellent books and I heartily recommend them, but neither I think can compare to James Webb's classic "Fields of Fire."

Webb's book is from the James Jones school of realism. The book has the stinging ring of authenticity and no wonder, Webb was a Marine officer in Vietnam himself and won the Navy Cross, a Silver Star and two Bronze Stars so he definitely knows of what he writes.

But this isn't just a book written by an officer about officers. His portraits of the enlisted men are just as real and are full blooded characters. Some are tough, mean and unlikeable, but hey, that's real life for you.

And just like real life, you'll find yourself bonding and getting close to these characters and when some are killed, you are affected.

Be warned: "Fields of Fire" isn't a happy story. The ending is tragic but given the setting of the story, it's entirely appropriate.

Mr. Webb has done himself and the Marines who served in Vietnam a great honor.

Semper Fi Mr. Webb.

A definate read
Hi to everyone. I write this review, beacause this is one of my all time favorite books. I read it when I was in the 7th grade and I just now read it again, and I'm 17. The book is beautifully written, and can capture the mind of anyone, it did mine. I cried through most of it, considering the whole plot was on loss and healing. I cried mostly because of the chracter Jimmy. He was my favorite and a person, if real, I would love to meet. Then his life tragically cut short in the midst of his career. Which obvisouly affected his best friend since birth, Morgan Hackett (affectionatly called "Hackett".)It reminses and shows their sometimes strange yet loving friendship and how it suddenly ends. This book shows healing of the main chracter, Morgan who will have to face the pain and eventually does. The plot of this story is almost like Romeo and Juliet, but in my eyes more tragic.( A juliet without her Romeo). I recommend this book with 5 stars. ;) And it proves, change does happen.

Was amazed with the reality and the action through the book!
"Say Goodnight, Gracie" is probably one of the best books I have ever read. This heartfelt story of to best friends who have known each other for all of the 17 years of thier lives is one that will surely win you over as one of your favorites! Let me give you a little taste of the book. It starts out in a town on the out skirts of Chicago where 1 young dancer( Jimmy Wolff) and 1 young actress (Morgan, narrator), both struggling to have careers in the city. Both go through good times and bad, when suddennly an accident has taken Jimmy's life and Morgan must learn to cope without him. Thanks to her aunt, mother and Jimmy's mother, it looks as though she will be just fine! I suggest this book to you because I have read it my self and believe me it is by far the best book I have ever read in my life. Both Jimmy and Morgan are compelling and loveable characters! I sure hope this book gets a lot of publicity because absoloutly should. I recomend you go to the nearest library and check this book out right NOW!!!!!!!

Fantastic. An absolutely wonderful book.
This book appealed to me when I first saw it in my school library when I was in 4th grade. I am now a freshman in high school, and this book has tied with any of "The Chronicles of Narnia" for the best children's book I have ever read. The detail and colorful, imaginative scenes that Ms. Edwards paints for her readers with her words are timeless. The plot was not too hard for a 9-year-old to understand, but somehow the book doesn't make even a teenager feel embarrassed to be seen in public with it. I loved in it fourth grade, and I love it now. Definitely a literary treasure for those who are young at heart.

Teaches the important lessons of life, no matter your age.
Julie Edwards takes us on a magical trip which is only possible for those who can use their imaginations and carefully observe their surroundings. Children will love the comical creatures who can only defeat them if they allow their emotions, both positve and negative, to be used against them. I have read this story to classes from Grade Four to Grade Six and all the children have loved the plot and characters. The children will learn to deal with Swamp Gaboons and Tree Squeaks, which are found on all elementary school playgrounds, as well as Sidewinders and the Prock who are found in most elementary school staffrooms. A wonderful book!

Imagination 101 - a timeless gift for kids & adults!
I first discovered this book over 12 years ago when it was only available in hard cover while I was running the young readers section of a bookstore. We only carried one copy but after I had read the book myself I began recommending it to people who wanted something "really special" to give to children. Soon we had to keep 2-3 copies on the shelf to accomodate our customers. I have to admit I gushed about this book...it's one of the finest explorations of imagination I have ever run across (and since I have a personal library of over 10,000 books *besides* all the others I've read, I feel that I have a good perspective! ). This was the first 'big' children's book that I read aloud to my own children (who where then four and two). They were enthralled. We read a chapter a night and the one time I was too sick to read, they *insisted* on *two* chapters the next night! I'm so glad that this book is now available in paperback so that more people can enjoy it...but I'm glad that I have my copy in hard cover because I know that it will be read many more times over the years! (hey! I've read it more than five times already myself!!) This is a classic that is suitable for all ages...except perhaps infants!

This is the story of Julie Weiss who is in Vienna, Austria when Hitler takes over. When he takes over her mom kills herself, but before she does she gets her daughter and son a way to New York to live with her Anut Clara. Before it is time to leave her brother disapears and she goes alone.
When she gets there and finds out her aunt is an actor she gets a part as Wendy in Peter Pan. Soon after that she is offerd a part in a movie, which makes her think about life in Vienna and changes the way she thinks about life.
This is a good book. Its a real easy read. I was dissapointed that it did'nt say a lot about World War II.

Possibly the best Dear America book so far.
I was fortunate enough to obtain an advanced edition of this wonderful book. Barry Denenberg is a wonderful author. He brought a wonderfully human viewpoint to this tragic time in history. Twelve-year-old Julie Weiss is the daughter of a wealthy Jewish couple in 1938 Vienna. She has a comfortable life, until Hitler's army invades Austria. Her family is the target of violence, and her mother sinks into depression, eventually commiting suicide. In spite of the bleakness of the first half the book, there is hope in the second half. Julie's father, desperate for her safety, arranges for her to go to New York City to live with her aunt and uncle, but decides to stay behind and help others. She is full of loneliness and despair at first, but finds comfort in her relatives and in a career in acting. I highly reccomend this to historical fiction fans. The author did an excellant job of bringing the time period to life.

one eye laughing the other weeping
this book is so sad. It is sad when hitler invades austria.the saddest part is when her mom dies. Her brother is a zionist and her uncle and teacher dissapear one day. Her brother moves to palestine. Her dad gives her english lessons and sends her to america with her aunt clara. Her aunt is a actress and soon julie becomes a actress. Her uncle is phoographer and she likes to go with him in the weekend to take pictures in the park. This book is sad and intresting to. I recommend this book to kids 9-12. And also read my secre war the diary of madeline beck.

--Ten-year-old Mandy lives at a girls' orphanage and wants her own family and own home. Her latter wish is granted when she discovers a small cottage in the woods behind the orphanage. Over most of the year, Mandy fixes up the cottage and plants a lovely garden, but when she suddenly falls ill at the cottage one night, no one can find her. Or so she thought: Mandy actually has a good friend whom she doesn't even know about. --This is a rare type of book: it was sweet yet still lively, which is something which is both unusual and great to read. --Marisa

Julie Andrews= Talent
Julie Andrews' name is next to the word *TALENT* in the dictionary. She can sing better than *anyone* in the world, she is an absolutely pheunomenal, versatile actress (she won an Academy Award for Best Actress to prove it), an absobloominlutely AMAZING writer and has a personality to die for. Let me ask you, how is it possible to be all these things and then be EXTREMELY Beautiful???
I don't know how she does it! But I'm postively mesmerized by everything she's done.
Anyhoo, onto the book. Mandy is VERY VERY VERY well-written and as I've said previoulsly, its hard to believe that someone who cna sing and act as perfectly as Julie can write to wonderfull as well! Julie adds so much detail so you know every little thing thats going on in the story. You can almost SMELL the flowers and see the garden and feel the love! It's tremondous. I could read this book OVER and OVER until someone finally whacks me over the head and slaps me back into reality. If you love this book (I can't imagine anyone NOT loving this book) I HIGHLY recommened Julie Andrews Edwards' other children's novel "The Last Of The Really Great WHangdoodles", kinda sounds like something from the woman who put Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious into our vocabulary, doesn't it? 'Whandoodles' is so creative and so wonderful!!!
Bravo, Dame Julie!
BY THE WAY- further back in the comments someone said that Julie wrote this because she lost a bet to her daughter Emma Kate, she ACTUALLY lost a bet with her daughter *Jennifer*. The bet was that if Julie didn't stop swearing (or cursing) Jen would make her right a book....looks like Julie couldn't stop. :-)

GREAT BOOK, GREAT AUTHOR, GREAT FUN!

Mandy
I absolutley love this book. My Grandma gave it to me as a present when I was 8 or 9 and I didn't even really like to read, but this was an amaizing story that really captures the reader. Mandy was so interesting to read about. I couldn't put the book down when I started reading it. I would fall asleep reading it! It was an easy book to read, no difficult words or ideas, so it would be ideal for a younger child, but it was also so interesting that an older person could definatey enjoy it. It is still my favorite book. I've loved this book for almost 10 years and I have no idea how many times I read it. But it's still good and draws me into the fantasy ever time I read it. I'd reccomend this book for a mom to read to her daughter. I'm sure you'll enjoy this book.

A must-own for Indian food fans
I disagree with those who said Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking was simpler--I found this one easier to follow and the recipes less complicated, yet equally as delicious. For the beginner, Sahni also takes time to explain basic techniques, concepts, and spices which are necessary to Indian cooking but may be unfamiliar to Westerners. She even explains how to make chenna and paneer (and then how to turn it into ras malai, which I recommend highly).

The recipes included are wide-ranging (definitely more in here than Jaffrey's) and an excellent introduction to Indian cooking. It's the best basic book on the subject I've used.

Great Book !!
This book was ranked among the top-six all-time cooking bibles by the New York Times. The moghul cuisine recipes are clear and detailed, without being "too-detailed". Julie Sahni uses her amazing knowledge of combining spices to make the dishes taste extraordinary. Meant as much for the cooking experts as it is for the beginners, one of the sections is devoted to basic cooking techniques, concepts and description of Indian spices. (This review has been taken from recipedelights.com)

My Favorite Window Into India
Some eight years ago or so, I decided to try to impress both my vegetarian and non-vegetarian friends by making them some authentic Indian dishes. The only thing was, I had no real idea of what I was getting into, as almost all of the Indian food I had eaten had been in restaurants in London and the East Village in Manhattan.

Somehow I found my way to purchasing "Classic Indian Cooking." Slowly and methodically, I then made my way through the very helpful discussions about such things as roasting and crushing spices and herbs and techniques for preparing onions, garlic and ginger root as bases for various curry dishes.

I've since learned that this cookbook was ranked last year as one of six all-time cooking "bibles" by the New York Times. I can see why. It's not a picture text (although there are some helpful illustrations); it's a text for teaching yourself a wholly different cuisine whose fundamental cooking techniques may be completely foreign to many home chefs in the United States, although that seems to be changing.

There are some simply astonishing recipes in this book. You will need to take your time though, because they can be complex and may require preparation of recipe components a day ahead of the time you plan to serve your meal. You should take Julie Sahni's words to heart that cooking should be a "relaxing" enterprise.

If pressed to choose a favorite recipe, it would have to be "Keema Bhare Bandh Gobhi" (meat-stuffed cabbage rolls with ginger lemon sauce), which has a vegetarian counterpart in "Aloo Bhare Bandh Gobhi" (same cabbage rolls, but a vegetarian version stuffed with a spicy potato filling). The extraordinary taste of this meal cannot be found in any Indian restaurant of which I am aware (they tend to stick to a small repertoire of established recipes that in no way define the range of cuisine actually available in India). I have seen these cabbage rolls almost voraciously consumed. That--in my book--is the mark of a great meal.

So, my friends over time have been duly impressed and I must say that I've become a much better cook because of "happening" across this true classic of varied Indian cuisines. Hope you have as much fun with it as I have had over the last eight years!

The Best Book Ever
Nancy is my favorite character in the book Sideway Stories from Wayside School. I like it because... the chapter is very funny because if you think nancy is a girl you are totally wrong! It's a boy! He has big handsand feet and he thinks Nancy is a girls name. His class, Mrs. Jewls's class, thought his name was odd too. There are 23 people in his Class (not counting him). Before they had Mrs.Jewls they had Mrs. Gorf. I'm going to tell you about the whole story. So read it if you like weird books you will love this book !

5 star book
If you like pointless funny books read this. Sideways Stories from Wayside School is a great book. If you're like me and like pointless books this the book for you. This school has thirty floors but no nineteenth story. Strange! Yeah! This does not have chapters but it has stories about kids in the school. Let me tell you these kids are weird. They paint crazy pictures; they fall asleep and fall out of windows. These are just a few of the crazy stories. Go get a copy of this.

Funny, Funny...
It opens with children-turned apples turning their teacher, Mrs. Gorf, into an apple and giving her to their gym teacher, Louis (the author) to eat.

Need I say more?

This book is hilarious. I could just see kids I know going to a school thirty stories tall, with a classroom on each side, struggling through torturous mosquito bites, a teacher who thinks you're a monkey, and all sorts of kooky and downright hilarious characters. I could read this over and over. It is so realistic, yet oh so spacy.

I first read this book when I was about seven or eight. I have read it over and over with each of my five younger siblings and it gets funnier each time. Sachar has a way of appealing to all audiences.

Parents, the Wayside school series is the easiest way to get boob-tube obsessed kids to read a good book for a change.

And it is a good book!

What's So Great About It?
I feel like SIMON COWELL and I'm sorry, but I just don't see what was so great about this book. It was boring and the plot was very weak. Need I say more? Well, I will. I usually love this author.

Read it now!
I love Julie Garwood, but this book was great even for her! I fell in love with Alec immediately and Jamie was one of my favorite heroines. Forced to pick a bride from an English family on the King's request, the laird is reluctant. Duty overcomes his reluctance and he travels to chose his wife from the Baron's daughters and get back to his beloved Scotland. He picks the youngest daughter, with her man's name and all. But he soon finds his life is far from complacent, but is instead turning his life upside down. And he, of course, learns to love it. And her. This story was incredibly romantic but still made me laugh out loud as she manages to start war after war with other clans as she tries to fit in with the household. A great story, a great writer. You definately need to pick this one up!

From the first word 'til the last, this book grabs the heart
This book was the first one I had ever read by Julie Garwood. Now, I own ever book she ever wrote. Jamie and Alec marry on order of their respective kings, but fall in love on the order of their hearts. Jamie is a strong heroine, stubborn and loyal to her heart. Alec is a typical Highland warrior who has a lot to learn about women. Jamie is more than willing to instruct him. A secret enemy threatens their tender love If youre tired of weepy weak heroines, you'll love this book. Its one of the reasons I love Ms Garwood's stories. Her characters are women who have experience pain but have become stronger for it. The men are strong and stubborn as well.. but also learn what it means to love completely. The romance is secondary to the story and ususally occurs after marrage. Her storys are historically factual, and painted vibrantly. Also, if youre like me, you'll want to read more about Jamie and Alec. They show up again as support characters in the book, The Wedding. (Thanks Julie for letting me know what has happened in my "family's " life.)

This book was FANTASTIC!!!
The Secret was the first Historical Romance I ever read. I loved it so much that I read it 13 times!! I have a friend who is legally blind and when I told her about the book, she asked me to read it to her over the phone since I didn't live close to her. She absolutely loved it also and had me read it to her over and over again. We both fell absolutely head over heels in love with Iain, he was and still is our perfect dream man. This is one book that can not be put down once you pick it up no matter what time of night it is. I saw many a sunrise because I was so engrossed in the story from the first reading to the 13th. I have let other people borrow my book and everyone came back with the same feeling as I had about this wonderful story--happy and wishing that todays men were as wonderful as Iain is--considerate and loving, strong and soft. I keep looking for a sequel to The Secret. I hope Julie Garwood writes one soon. Every one of her books have made me laugh and cry and left me hoping fo

top 3 of my favorite books of all times
Wow! This book is definitely a keeper! I have reread this more than 5 times and still get the same reaction. It is excitingly a page turner. This book brings about all sorts of emotions, from the beginning to the end, no boring scenes whatsoever! The friendship of Frances Catherine & Judith is impressively well designed. The adjustment of Judith to the Highland ways & how the people reacted to her was surely a roller coster, mixed emotions-which I find utterly heart quenching. Of couse, not to forget the hero/heroine... The love story of Iain & Judith completely warms my heart, they are both different yet perfect for each other. Even the secondary characters, all uniquely described and well written. The friendships, trust & loyalty, the love and acceptance...all made this book a perfect 10. 5 stars rating is simply an understatement. J.G. have outdone herself this time!

Sequel: RANSOM - Another perfect story. A must read after SECRET.

Note: I would like to enumerate some scenes that makes this book a perfect 10 for me but it's not fair to mention only one or even two, as I find all situations/scenes, even the smallest of all.... interesting, hilarious, exciting, tear jerker & endearing in its own magical ways. This book is worth your time! READ IT.

Exquisite
The first book I read from Julie Garwood's collection was The Wedding and ever since then I became obsessed with her books. I had this urgent need to find all her books and just get lost in those tales...and I did. Her Scottish novels intrigued me and I will never get bored with them. This book, the Secret, has held a special place in my heart ever since I finished it. It made me smile when the Judith and Frances Catherine were young and their first meeting was filled with childish believes and how the screaming started from one child to another. It got me all warmed up to read how a warrior, all tough and invincible, can soften towards a beautiful woman. It certainly made me laughed when Judith was to be married to Iain....you would too when you get to that part. And all other parts of the book. It is a place away from reality, a place where love and all silly things can happen...it will take more than just a tap on the shoulder to put those books down...my eyes did not leave the words until I was at the last page.
