Plesasurable reading
Rare and Commonplace Flowers innovates in the scholarly field. A carefully documented biography, it reconstructs step by step the story of Elizabeth Bishop and Lota de Macedo Soares.Carmen Oliveira's literary achievement lies in conveying this research of undeniable academid value in a very agreeable piece of storytelling.A must for Women's Studies, the book is recommended to anyone who enjoys a good read.

At last, in English!
This book is a treasure, a delightful read. It speaks to a broad range of interests. Fans of Elizabeth Bishop will enjoy learning about her relationship with Lota and her experiences during the 17 years she lived in Brazil. If you are interested in Brazilian history and politics, you will find a rare account of the early sixties in Rio de Janeiro, as the country headed toward military dictatorship. It is also a marvelous and tragic love story.

As an American living in Brazil for the past 20 years, I found it a fascinating account of how Lota and her country provided a haven for Bishop, an orphan prone to writer's block and alcoholism. Rare and Commonplace Flowers, read in addition to Bishop's letters, opens a whole new window on her writing. Ever since I read the original in Portuguese, in 1995, I have been convinced that it merits the attention of non-Portuguese speakers. Thanks to the excellent translation of Neil Besner, you've got it!

Elizabeth Bishop and Her Art (Under Discussion)
Published in Hardcover by University of Michigan Press (1983)
Authors: Lloyd Schwartz and Sybil P. Estess
Amazon base price: $44.50
Average review score:

This is the only book on Bishop that includes work by her.
AS the editor of this book, I'd like readers to know that it not only includes major essays by leading American critics like Helen Vendler, Robert Pinsky, and David Lehman, but that it also contains previously uncollected material by Bishop herself, work not available in any other book. This was a landmark book on Bishop and remains the most thorough collection of material on her work: critical essays, reviews, and even poetry about her (by James Merrill and Robert Lowell).

STROKES OF BEAUTY AND RICHNESS
This magnificent volume is the companion piece to the recent exhibition at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, showcasing the prints of one of America's foremost contemporary artists (and Provincetown resident) Mazur. The catalogue raisonne is as good to look at as it is to read: all of his prints from 1956 to 1999 are fully illustrated, and essays have been penned by four leading authorities, covering various aspects of Mazur's life and career. Richly produced, and rich in reference.

Mazur's Mastery
The newly published book, The Prints of Michael Mazur, extends research into the field of monotype printing and printmaking in New England in general. Mazur's exploration of the figure is competent as illustrated by his tour de force, Dante's Inferno series, and his landscapes, which progress towards a poignant abstraction, furthers the use of color, and extends the issue of scale in the printmaking world. This book is an excellent teaching guide. Professor Kurt Wisneski, author of Monotype/Monoprint: History and Techniques

Lloyd--What Happened: A Novel of Business
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (1998)

SATIRE OR REALITY?
"LLOYD: WHAT HAPPENED" IS BILLED AS A FICTIONAL SATIRE OF THE CORPORATE WORLD IN THE 90'S. THIS IS JUST A RUSE TO AVOID LAWSUITS. LLOYD COMES CLOSER TO THE TRUTH OF WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON IN THE HIGHER RELMS OF THE CORPORATE MONARCHY THAN MOST NON-FICTION INSIDER ACCOUNTS. IF YOU HAVE EVER WONDERED WHY MIDDLE MANAGEMENT AND LOWER LEVEL CORPORATE JOBS DISAPPEAR OVER NIGHT, READ LLOYD. IT'S A VERY FUNNY AND INSIGHTFUL BOOK.

Great business novel for the Gen'xer or Boomer
I just graduated from college and wanted some summer reading before I begin work on Wall Street. I was looking for a novel that was business centered, creative, witty, funny, and suspensful and this book delivered all of these qualities. I highly recommend this book to anyone, I found myself unable to put "Lloyd" down for a moment. I can't wait to read the next book that "Stanley Bing" writes.

everything the company recruiter never warned you about
As any manager-level person in any large corporation will tell you, it's career suicide to conduct a meeting, or make a presentation at a meeting, without backup in the form of Microsoft Powerpoint graphics. It does not matter that there are many instances where graphics do not help make a point. They're just required. An absence of graphics is interpreted as meaning that there is no value to the information presented.

This book constitutes Lloyd's opportunity to explain "what happened." And, being corporate-savvy, Lloyd illustrates his "presentation" to the reader with graphics. It is that kind of insight that makes the book more than just entertainment. It is a disturbingly-accurate look at how the world's most powerful economy conducts its less-publicized activities. And it is very, very funny.

Miriam's Tambourine: Jewish Folktales from Around the World

Deadly dull
I couldn't stay awake through a single one of these brief folktales. The writing is absolutely leaden. The book claims that Schwartz has done a little bit of research -- though most of the stories are retold in much livelier fashion by other writers. I was looking for a book to use in a course on world folktales. It certainly won't be this brick. It would be enough to make a student drop a course.
