My son's favorite book
This was given to my son one Christmas when he was 3-4 years old. It was his favorite book for so long. Because it is only illustrations, it can be read differently by many people. The pictures are amazing; the details and creativity just wonderful. I then purchased every other book by Peter Collington, and both of my children have loved them all. I have given this book as a gift many times!

Jenny and the Tennis Nut
The book Jenny and the Tennis Nut is a great book for little kids who are running around the house getting into mischievous. If you have little kids they will love to see what Jenny's big dream is and why she doesn't want her dad to teach her the game of tennis. Jenny will be climbing, chartwheeling, and flipping her way into your childrens hearts. I rated this book a 5.

Fantastic book!
This is a beautifully written version of The Nutcracker. I have never read a more beautiful adaptation. The CD is incredible and I think Claire Bloom's reading of the book is amazing. I hope that many people will buy this book and enjoy it.

Selina and the Bear Paw Quilt
Selina and the Bear Paw Quilt is a wonderful children's book rich with American heritage. It is a tender story about a girl's sadness to leave her Grandmother as their family flees the conflict of Civil War and moves to Canada. Selina finds comfort in her memories found in the fabrics of the quilt her Grandmother sends along with her to Canada.

The illustrations are heart warming and nearly every page has beautifully detailed borders of actual quilts. A thoroughly charming and informative book!

A great collection of stories for children
With forty-four beloved children's tales in this book, it is a welcome resource for parents of small children.

It would be easy to spend thousands of dollars on children's books. Fortunately, this collection can help. A parent can substitute this volume for individual books, or can evaluate stories and decide whether or not to purchase a separate copy. I was disappointed to learn from one reviewer that illustrations were missing from books; I wouldn't have known since I was reading many of these stories for the first time, and can understand the editorial difficulties leading to such a decision, but it is too bad. The stories range from classic (Madeline, Goodnight Moon, Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, Stellaluna, Amelia Bedelia, The Story of Ferdinand) to more obscure, and contain works by Marc Brown (an Arthur/D.W. story) and Dr. Seuss.

A color key both in the Table of Contents and at the bottom of each page lets you know for what age level each story is most likely appropriate: toddler, preschool, or 5+. At 10 by 11 inches, I would suggest getting the hardover edition, since kids and parents will drop this larger book more often (in addition to normal wear and tear).

An introductory Note to Parents is helpful, and the book concludes with Biographical Notes, a Guide to Reading Ages, and an index.

This is a remarkable book and our child loves it -- and so do we. You and your child may very well love it, too!

A truly wonderful collection of classic stories!
I bought this book after checking it out at the library and being in awe at the wonderful stories in it. My boys are 2 and almost every night at dinner we read a new story. With classics from Curious George and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel to the rhythmic Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, there are surely stories to fit every need. The book also lists which stories are appropriate for different ages. Most of the stories are condensed to 4-6 pages with lots of pictures, but some have few illustrations and are great for reading in the car, at dinner, or at bedtime when your child is really sleepy.

We own several of the individual books and will probably buy more of them for the boys to be able to read and hold. This book is too heavy and awkward for small children to be handling, but it is a convenient way to expose them (and me!) to some of the great stories that have been written over the years. Besides, you'll want to keep it in good shape to hand down to your grandchildren! This collection of stories will make a wonderful gift for new or expecting parents or for older children who love to read.

Absolutely amazing collections of children's favorites
Most of the 'greatest hits' collections - whether for a time period or a particular artist seem to always leave out the best song or super-star groups. This Treasury astounded me by collecting 'all' the great authors and stories (at least all of the ones I can thing of). Madeline, Dr. Seuss, Babar, Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, The Berenstain Bears, Amelia Bedelia, Stellaluna, Pooh, etc... I am amazed that the editors managed to get the rights to publish all of these incredible favorites!

The texts of the stories are complete (as far as I can tell), but the illustration have been shrunk so that all of the stories will fit in one volume. Something is lost in the process, but I can imagine that it would be the perfect book for a trip, keeping a any kids' home-away-from-home (like grandma's house), or just to read to discover previously unknown classics (which is what my five year old and I are doing).

An added benefit is the history - the stories were all written in a historical context and to a greater or lesser extend reflect the society in which they were written. The editors wisely put the year of publication with each story. So when I read them to my daughter I can also comment (when applicable) not only about whether or not I had read the story as a kid, but also set the story in a historical context (take Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, published in 1939, for example).

Of course, for stories destined to become favorites, the full-sized editions with illustrations are really needed; but for an anthology, this book cannot be beat!

Countdown to spring
Counting down from 10 ladybugs, 9 butterflies, 8 birds, etc. to spring conjures up lovely watercolor paintings of springtime flowers with creatures crawling, fluttering, and singing. The child can find these creatures around the flowers and meadows and count how many are in the picture while learning to recognize and name each one. The one basket on the last page contains vegetable treats for the creatures with the creatures grouped together in their specific number. For reinforcement, the child can name the various creatures and count how many of them are depicted in each group, just as they did from page to page. The text is very simple, a story of light fluttering creatures taking their places in the scheme of spring.

Just right for an Easter basket!
Simple, but beautiful watercolor paintings of springtime creatures invite young children to use their counting skills. Starting with ten ladybugs, each page counts down to include 9 butterflies, 8 birds, 7 chicks, 6 ducklings, 5 mice, 4 bunnies, 3 squirrels and 2 foxes. The final spread has an Easter basket filled with goodies for each of the animals. The animals on each page are shown along with flowers of the season, such as iris, crocus, tulips, cherry blossoms and daffodils. Although the book is fairly small, and therefore easy for a young child to hold, it will work well in a toddler or young preschool storytime setting, because the text is simple, and the illustrations are easily visible from a distance. Keep this title in mind for including in a young child's Easter basket!

Spring is Here.....
"It's spring! Do you think the children who live here will remember their animal friends on this special day?" Turn the page and let's find out. Beginning with ten bright red and black lady bugs, crawling among the beautiful purple and yellow crocuses, little ones are asked, "Can you count them?" Then nine butterflies flutter across the double page spread, eight bright yellow, singing birds, seven peeping chicks, six quacking ducks, and on and on until you reach "1 Easter Basket filled with treats for all the animals." Janet Schulman and Meilo So have authored a simple, gentle little treasure of a counting book, that will charm preschoolers as young as two, with its engaging springtime animals and bright, colorful, watercolor artwork. Perfect for lap cuddling, Countdown To Spring is a sweet, fresh, vibrant and fun way to introduce both counting and the warmer season coming our way.

Disappointment
I bought this book to take on vacation for our 3 year old son, hoping that it would eliminated the need to pack 20 or so books. The selections are excellent however the pictures with the stories are small and it seems that many of the pictures have been deleted. And much of the joy of reading these stories comes from looking at the pictures.
My recommendation is to print out the table of contents and then go check the individual books out at the library.

Great Book
I found this book on the sale table at my local Border's Book Store and though it might be fun to read to my soon who was 4 - 1/2 at the time. We both enjoyed the stories and I have read some of them by myself. My favorite is The True Story of The Three Little Pigs. As a budding stand up comic I have always found that there is a lot of fun and laughs in fairy tales and this story proves it. My son likes the longer stories and if it is to long we do it over two nights. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading to their kids and it also helps with children learing new words and works on their attention span.

Great book
This was a very good book to buy for my daughter she loves it!

Much better than Disney
The book is head and shoulders above the overly cute Disney cartoon. It is not, however, just a children's book. Like the Grimm fairy tales, Bambi is a story with a message in social behavior and consequences of one's actions. From the book trivia side, it's quite interesting to learn that Whittaker Chambers, former member of the Communist Party of the USA and star witness at Alger Hiss' trial and author of "Witness," translated Salten's book from the German in the 1920s, while Chambers was still an active CPUSA member. Makes one wonder what kind of message Chambers thought Salten had written... Read the book, avoid the movie.

Absolutely wonderful
The only reason I read Bambi by Felix Salten was because I thought the Disney movie was kind of "cute."

THE BOOK IS SOOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER.

This isn't exactly what you would call a children's book. Salten has written what some would almost call a satire about survival in the woods and the dangers of manpower. This book (along with Salten's other book, Fifteen Rabbits) has been the only book that has moved me to tears. This is a must-read for ANYONE. You won't be able to put it down. But, beware, there are some pretty moving and powerful scenes in this story, so have some kleenexes ready! (In the end, EVERY major character, including Faline, his father, etc., is killed except for Bambi and his two young children.)

P.S.--If you liked this book, be sure to go out and read Salten's other book about forest life, except this time from a rabbit's point of view: Fifteen Rabbits. You'll love it!

A true classic for all of the family!
I first read Bambi 30 years ago and was lucky enough to find a 1929 copy that I will hold dear to my heart forever. The author takes you deep into the forest where you become one of the animals. You can feel the cold and smell the fear among them when the two-legged animal called "Man" arrives. It allows readers to immerse themselves in the world, seeing it from an animal's point of view.

It's a great book to share with kids and a valuable learning experience about the ways of nature. At times it is cruel and very true to life. It teaches respect for our elders, and love of family. We stand back and watch Bambi grow stronger until he has a sense of wisdom that only experience can bring. This is truly a book to share with your kids. It is so much more than a Disney cartoon.

Fascinating and educational at the same time.
This terrific book features drawings and thumbnail descriptions of a wide variety of jungle denizens from insects to large mammals. Then on succeeding pages are drawings of the jungle habitat with the same animals hidden in various degrees. Searching out these naturally camoflaged critters kept my grand-daughter entertained for hours and we both learned a lot about the lives of these exotic species.
