Jeffrey Schrank's little book is not nearly as voluminous or ponderous as Alvin Toffler's Future Shock, but it is far more persuasive. Schrank examines the ways in which we forgo what we really want -- or even asking ourselves what we really want -- and instead settle for what is in front of us. The analysis applies not only to consumerism but to modern institutions as well. Snap, Crackle, and Popular Taste is a fast and fun read, bound to get you thinking.

This book is an excellent beginning source for teachers who wish to incorporate media literacy into their lessons. The section on media literacy and how it fits into the complexities of mass media is very thorough. The text is easy to follow, and easily adaptable for 9-12th graders.
