Isabel Schon, director of the Center for the Study of Books in Spanish for Children and Adolescents at California State University in San Marcos, is the author of A Bicultural Heritage: Themes for Exploration of Mexican and Mexican-American Culture in Books for Children and Adolescents (Scarecrow, 1978); A Hispanic Heritage: A Guide to Juvenile Books about Hispanic People and Cultures, Series I^-IV (Scarecrow, 1980^-91); and A Latino Heritage: A Guide to Juvenile Books about Latino People and Cultures, Series V (Scarecrow, 1995). Designed for teachers and librarians seeking an annotated bibliography of English-language books that accurately portray the cultures of Latino people, The Best of the Latino Heritage combines the best titles from these previous books with additional new titles of merit. It provides access to in-print and out-of-print books in English published in the U.S. since the 1950s. Titles were selected by the author for inclusion because of the quality of the art and writing and the potential appeal to students. Entries are arranged by country or geographic area: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the Latino-heritage people of the U.S. Books are listed in alphabetical order by author surname, and each entry contains full bibliographic data, including ISBNs and pricing information. The author has assigned grade-level designations but cautions that books can obviously be read and enjoyed by students at different grade levels. The evaluative annotations contain a plot summary and often a quote from the book. The books deal with a variety of topics: mythology, folklore, history, art, and culture as well as the political, social, and economic problems of the people in the specific countries. One annoying aspect of this book is the fact that the author may cite a work in several sections and provide see references to the main entry, without providing the specific page number. This means a user must paw through the book for the right section and then scan the pages looking for the specific entry. However, the author has included three separate indexes: author, title, and subject. Many of the books listed have pre-1990 publication dates, and some are out of print. Nevertheless, with the interest in multicultural literature for children and young adults, libraries that do not own the other volumes may want to consider purchasing this title for both selection and reference work.

A diferencia de lo que ocurre en el mundo editorial anglosajón, en el panorama editorial hispano no son muchos libros dedicados al estudio de la literatura infantil y juvenil. "Introducción a la literatura infantil y juvenil", de las especialistas Isabel Schon y Sarah Corona Berkin, constituye, por tanto, un aporte sumamente valioso. El principal mérito de la obra es la forma sencilla y amena en que está escrita. No se trata de un texto sólo para especialistas, de esos llenos de palabras incomprensibles, sino de un libro que desea ofrecer información puntual y valiosa a padres, maestros, bibliotecarios y todas aquellas personas interesadas en el futuro de las nuevas generaciones de lectores.

¿Qué hacer para que los niños y los adolescentes descubran el encanto de la lectura? Se podrían enumerar muchas recomendaciones, pero la más efectiva de todas sería, simplemente, propiciar el encuentro con libros de calidad, que se relacionen con sus intereses y se correspondan con su grado de madurez como lector. Con libros capaces de motivarlos y de despertar su curiosidad por leer otros. Así pues, lo primero y más importante que debe conocer un adulto interesado en conducir a los niños hacia la lectura, es cuáles libros pueden ser capaces de entusiarmarlos. Y ese, entre otros, es uno de los objetivos principales del libro de las autoras Schon y Corona Berkin: dar a conocer obras de calidad, describirlas y comentarlas, para que padres, educadores y bibliotecarios puedan elegir, dentro de ese amplio conjunto, aquellas que les parezcan más apropiadas.

De interés tanto para los hispanoparlantes residentes en Estados Unidos, como para el público de España y Latinoamérica, el libro es un instrumento útil en la nada sencilla labor de animar a leer. Su importancia es mayor aún para quienes se relacionan con niños de origen hispano que viven en los Estados Unidos. Es sabido que muchos adultos hispanos residentes en este país afirman ser bilingues, pero en realidad su dominio del castellano es limitado: pueden utilizarlo para comunicarse oralmente, pero no lo dominan en lo concerniente a la lectura y la escritura. Una forma de lograr que las nuevas generaciones conserven su lengua materna, y profundicen en su conocimiento, es acostumbrándolos desde chicos a leer libros de calidad. This book is full of rhymes and riddles in Spanish for young people. It also has a songs section (w/o the written music) with the lyrics to songs like Los Pollitos and Don Gato. I teach Spanish and use it at school - but it has also encouraged my own 9 y.o. to improve her reading in Spanish.
