Hail the Lion
Remembering Norm is a poignant account not so much of Norm's life, but of the effect his living had on those who knew him. This book transcends the usual plot-line story in hopes of exploring the ripple effect in terms of the thoughts and feelings of others who knew Norm intimately. Through words from family and friends, and through pictures, the magnificent fabric of a young man's life unfolds. While depressing at times, one can sense joy as well in all those who knew him. If nothing else, the book is inspiring. Two thumbs (and two index fingers and pinkies) up!

This is a really good book
I read this book when I was in high school. It is about a girl who became a paraplegic, and how her friends dealt with her condition. As a teenager, it helped me to see that people should not be treated "differently" just because they have a challenging physical problem. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about people who courageously overcome a challenging situation.

What can YOU do?
I must have read this book right after it was first published. I found it in my English teacher's classroom.
The problems in this book: inaccesible public schools, and inaccessible public events aren't supposed to happen anymore, even though everybody knows it does in some places.
Sam and Johnny approach their similar problems from different venues, and yet both are successful.
It is great to see a book like this has been republished.

A Girl's Best Friend

Just Treat me Like 'm Normal!
Although written about a 12-year-old girl, presumably for other pre-teens, this book presents several serious themes and adult issues. Although blind, Laurie considers herself capable around the house and at school. But things start to disintegrate when she enters middle school: her 12-year-old dog is in pain; her father may lose his job; a school bully makes her life miserable; and a new teacher does not know how to treat her with dignity. Gradually watching her self-confidence erode, young Laurie faces fears of death--for her pet and her beloved grandmother.

The story gets a bit preachy in places, as the author tries to incorporate many valid ideas to educate the public at large re the handicapped. Can the sighted learn from the blind? It's a rather heavy tale at times, but offers hope for creative conflict resolution. The Handicapped must be
proactive in an assertive but non-aggressive manner, and not expect Society in general to read their mind. Will someone dear to Laurie die, as she learns valuable lessons of life?

Great!
I found this book was really great with happy and sad moments Laurie Moss, who has been blind since birth, spends her time helping her dog, Jessie, since she's sick. She was determined not to give up on her bestfriend.
