Goldilocks & the Three Bears
The signs were well done. I have a Daycare in my home and the kids would sign with me until their arms would get tired and they would lay down and watch and listen and start up again when their arms felt better. With a story like this that the kids are familar it makes then want to learn to sign more and more of it. My kids will sign parts of it to their father is knows very little about sign, but is learning happily. It was an excellent purchase for us.

A wonderful starter for preschoolers
My 2 1/2 year old loved this book and the signs were very easy to follow. Please get more books like this one! My son has a speech disorder and sign is his way to communicate. He loves books and we practice what we read.

I am hearing and I love this book !
I own several different books on sign language. This is worth the money. I am learning sign because I like it, my friend has 2 deaf children, I am a sub- teacher for a Para for a boy who is non-verbal, I am teaching my children for homeschool, and I want to be able to witness to deaf people. This is in ABC order and seems easier to use than the other books I have that are not. But I am hearing and this is probably why I like it better. I am looking for my friend the signs for the names of all the states.

This is the Book!
My son is currently nine and is nonverbal. Further, the chances that he will become verbal are very slim indeed. When I purchased this book, it was recommended by his speech teacher. I first thought it was a book teaching me "A, B, C" etc. In fact, signed English allows you to speak in words instead of letters. My son will never get letters but he certainly relates to words. This book has a basic vocabluary but still is quite thick. The number of words is amazing and very useful. We use the book daily and my son's vocabulary has increased dramatically since we began using it. I have read the other reviews stating the alphabetizing is a problem but I can't think of a more practical way to organize such a book. Regardless, this is the book for those wanting to speak to a nonverbal person. Additionally, our son is developmentally delayed but he still is able to communicate with us thanks to this book. Those of you with nonverbal children will think you've discovered gold if you haven't been able to communicate in the past.

not respectful of asl's beauty
i am just learning asl, but i was very dissapointed with this book's approach because i find signing to be so beautiful. The book is set up like a regular kid's book, with written text underneath a picture. The signed english is off in a box by itself, partly covering the picture. There is a ugly line drawing of the sign for each word of the text, with the word again written under it. The signs look out of place, and were the last thing my eye wandered to. I would not read this book to a deaf child, because i felt like it made the signs look like afterthoughts, or intrustions on english, rather than important events of their own. The signs are presented as isolated from the story and colorful illustrations, and they are very small and unattractive looking. i want any book i share with a child to convey the beauty and integrity of signs, and give the child pride in his culture. i would have liked it more if the signs were at least nicely drawn, or if the text was only shown once, as a key to the signs. I also wonder about the choice of translating a rhyming story like the night before christmas into a visual language like sign where rhymes carry no meaning. While i did learn a few new signs from it, i would recommendend buying a child's sign langauge book with pictures and signs for common words, or buying a children's book and drawing signs next to its text; your sign illustrations will probably look more inviting and send a better message about the importance of sign langauge

Helps kids learn to communicate in English
This is a wonderful series of children's books, using simplified versions of classic stories that families can enjoy together, especially if the deaf child has hearing parents. The signing technique used is Signed English, as opposed to ASL, so there a sign for each part of every sentence. S.E. was developed to teach kids about communication through the English language as well as through sign. A great resource for learning and literacy.
